We saw the Aker triple so far, pure domination. Today we enter the first tougher stage and actually an Aker rider being quite high on that favourite list again in Domen Novak.
Though to be honest, this must be one of the weirdest and most random favourite lists I have seen. Cavagna tops the list as roleur and allrounder, fair enough even though I had expected others ahead. Then Bol as best sprinter due to his allround skills as well and Phinney as best stage racer. 3 different rider types and then some more adding of random riders really.
Let`s better see how this stage works out in the end. At least the KoM competition should finally see some changes with lots of climbing on the way to the rather flat but still bumpy finish.
Having the early KoM leader trying to defend the jersey once going into proper climbing is nice to see. Let`s see how well Gilmore can perform today. He is one of the most flat riders you can imagine and close to Theo Bos level.
Rajapakshage being a decent allrounder while R. Goldstein being a pure time trialist and just made me realize, there are two Goldstein time trialists not only in the MG but also in that race.
Behind a mix of Aker, Xero, Fastned and Jura do the chasing. So who knows, sprinter teams trying to keep it a steady pace, not too fast. Maybe they can go for the stage as well as Bol suggested already on the favourite list.
Rajapakshage takes the first Cat.1 ahead of Goldstein and Gilmore, making it a shared lead of him and the reigning leader.
Andersen and Belohvosciks, the only riders that were listed as well before the stage attacked from the peloton for some more points. Then Salas and Plowright while chasing taking the 2-4 small pointers.
Moving over all those climbs and on to the final KoM.
The Grieg rider as expected was strongest on all those uphill sections and moves into the virtual KoM lead with 54 points.
Goldstein following at 40 while Gilmore at least never was fully dropped and collected enough to get 36 and remain on the podium. Belohvosciks at 22 and Andersen 18 following.
The gap right now with 66 km to go is at 3'20 and all riders are still together in that peloton including all sprinters!
Gilmore rather early and with 21km to go as well the other two breakaway riders were caught by the 4 chasing teams. Still the same as in the early kilometers.
The first "lap" on that late circuit is completed and the sprinters are in a good position. But seeing the uphill sections there should be attacks soon.
The pace in fact dropped a lot after catching them and sprinter teams want their leaders to recover a bit. Still 19km to go and they can`t slow down that much for very long.
Indeed some riders weren`t happy with that slow down. The first to attack is Mas followed by Carboni and Novak.
So basically the better "puncheurs and hybrids" in the field.
Xero`s Hamza is chasing trying to make it a sprinter stage still. 9 km to go.
After the trio was caught after 2-3 more attempts, we have a new scenario with 4,2 km to go and this now getting interesting.
Not sure if Räim was supposed to start a fast leadout or if he wanted to attack by himself. But GC leader and top sprinter Groenewegen realized it was the perfect opportunity to hang on to his team mate. Behind him the riders that looked for his wheel Bol, Van Poppel, Manninen, Steimle and Sweeny.
They have opened up a gap with Kemboi for the first time being more visible but in fact not having made contact and leading the peloton now.
Some 2nd tier GC riders and stage hunters again try to follow.
Chaves, Tolhoek, O'Brien, Mas and Carboni.
Then Fastned now with 4 riders chasing.
1,3 km and as said earlier. It didn`t really look like Räim was supposed to leadout Groenewegen. On the steeper part he is still going on fast while the sprinters opened a gap, mainly due to Groenewegen not following and others focussed on him only.
Not that Räim is a real hill specialist himself but apparently saved more energy than the others.
The group around Mas and Carboni also made contact now with the sprinters.
Final kilometer and the gap to Räim is small. Officially 12 s but the sprinters have started now. Steimle, who is in excellent form goes into the lead, Manninen behind him. Then Bol, Van Poppel and Groenewegen.
The puncheurs, who basically just made contact were surprised by that acceleration or couldn`t handle it and follow with a similar gap to them.
The peloton might not take the stage, but gaps should be tiny and none of the riders in front are the biggest threat for the podium or top5 but then again, never underestimate riders like Mas or Chaves.
Carboni as best climber is a bit further behind and about to be caught again by the peloton anyway.
Weven on a day where Groenewegen is not the best sprinter, the team takes it. 4th stage, 4th win for Aker, 3rd rider and this likely the most unexpected one.
Räim played it perfectly till the end and was not slowing down too much. Huge career win.
Steimle with another 2nd ahead of Manninen and Groenewegen. Then Bol and Van Poppel.
Sweeny, O'Brien and Tolhoek all stayed ahead of the peloton and got a 24s gap to the winning group.
Mas as biggest name just like Chaves behind him somehow were rewarded the same gap.
The peloton led by Mosca and Carboni and stage top favourite Cavagna at +46s, losing 22s on some 2nd tier GC riders today.
Weird stage, but what did you expect when an Aker win was obvious to happen today and the team most likely is as much surprised how this played out.
And one final bit. There apparently was a split happening in the final which was unnoted as first. Between 100th and 101st rider a gap of ~75 s was seen by officials. Most big names were in top100 but some did miss out, e.g. Ranaweera or Kirsch. Both might lose their GC chances this way.
