The Race

The organizer’s favourites are pretty much those already mentioned in the preview plus pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Amezawa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Champoussin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/jur.png Schmid.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/GrandDuche/PCM0001.jpg

It took some time for the break to be established, but after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kng.png Tiller was alone in front some time with numerous riders trying to bridge across a group of 5 was allowed to get away too: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/fas.png De Kleijn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Redy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Kamp, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/grm.png Van Gestel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Matsumoto.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/GrandDuche/PCM0002.jpg

With 153 km to go the break arrives at the first real hill, from now on it’s nearly entirely an up and down. The gap to the peloton is at 6’15 now after reaching nearly 7 minutes a bit earlier.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/GrandDuche/PCM0003.jpg

With slightly less than 100 km to go the gap is down to 4 minutes. It’s not much happening here really apart from the not-so-spectacular draining of the domestiques and soaking of the favourites.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/GrandDuche/PCM0004.jpg

With 64 km to go the break leaves the last plateau of the route, from now on it’s either uphill or downhill till the finish line. The peloton is still complete and 3 minutes behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/GrandDuche/PCM0005.jpg

And there’s already a split after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Zegklis pushed hard in front of the peloton. It probably won’t last this time, but it’s surely a sign that the hot phase of the race has begun. The break is still 2’21 in front though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/GrandDuche/PCM0006.jpg

But some km later the break is already caught with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Schinnagel pushing in the peloton. With his domestiques working so hard it’s probably only a matter of time until the WC pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Herklotz makes a move himself.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/GrandDuche/PCM0007.jpg

But the first to attack are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/jur.png Rohendi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png Mohoric at the third to last climb. With 21 km to go the peloton is down to 41 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/GrandDuche/PCM0008.jpg

The attackers didn’t get away, but as a result the leading group is down to 25 riders at the top of the hill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/GrandDuche/PCM0009.jpg

There haven’t been any attacks in the penultimate climb, so the 25 riders arrive at the final climb together. It’s only 4 km to the finish line now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/GrandDuche/PCM0010.jpg

With 2 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/jur.png Schmid is the first one to attack. On his wheel are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Lopez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Herklotz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/isa.png Van Niekerk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Areruya, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Romo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Formolo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/GrandDuche/PCM0011.jpg

The Swiss talent isn’t able to stay in front, but he was a great leadout for the big guns. Under the red kite the top 3 are out in front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Herklotz in the lead at the moment.
Behind them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Formolo are the first chasers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/GrandDuche/PCM0012.jpg

With 500 m to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Herklotz is still leading in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Areruya and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Lopez.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/GrandDuche/PCM0013.jpg

And no one’s able to accelerate anymore, so the WC takes another win! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Areruya and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Lopez stayed close, but weren’t able to get past the German.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/GrandDuche/PCM0014.jpg

Behind them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Formolo finishes in 4th, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/jur.png Schmid who was able to stay with the others after his initial attack. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko edges out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Amezawa for 6th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/isa.png Van Niekerk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Aranburu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ziz.png Storer complete the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/GrandDuche/PCM0015.jpg

Congratulations to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Herklotz! Who will be able to finally beat him – and when?
