Prologue start in Houilles. Just 3 km against the clock and this usually means, Andersen wins.
Though competition once more is fierce here with Chavanne and Leung around, two specialists as well. Add Kemboi and it`s the very best. Phinney stands out a bit by being the only top top prologue rider of all GC riders and could gain a bit of an advantage here already.
Zakarin early on goes for the fastest time, which was obvious as first starter. Though being pretty solid against the clock his 3'35 are a good indicator of things to come.
Tanfield just moments later goes 2s faster and takes the hot chair with 3'33.
But so far it`s not really going for them as they are immediately beaten again. First Vernon with the same time and then Thomas another second faster.
Sütterlin the same. Another second faster and new best time and finally it seems to hold for a bit. Neither Lammertink nor Yatsevich can beat that and go just in the big bulp of +1 s.
Chavanne is hoping to beat the big dominator, Andersen is. And while the time gaps are really tiny today, him going 2s faster than Sütterlin is a good sign. New hot seat.
Right now the top10 is just seperated by 4s with the whole top20 within 5s as well.
Leknessund, Goldstein and Matsuda later all finish +3 and move into the late top10, which means riders such as Mullen, Rekita and also already Vernon and Tanfield are slowly in the 10-20 area.
Faglum Karlsson definitely worth mentioning. He is the 2nd best GC rider in the short TTs and a real dark horse in this race. Sure, far from the best climbers and struggling a bit on the hills but he has the skills to fight for positions.
Right now going into 3rd position behind Chavanne and Sütterlin with +3.
Leung next and good news for King Power, less so for Jura. He is equalizing the 3'29 and judges put it right now on hold regarding position. It seems as if he was faster than Chavanne but the decision is not yet final.
Meanwhile some more finishers:
Erdeebat +3, Groselj +3 and then a new rider in the +2 range in Gonzalez Salas, who goes onto the virtual podium ahead of Sütterlin so far.
While the judges still check for exact positions in all those equal times, Andersen goes the easy way. He just finises -1 and taking the new best time with 3'28. No need to check. It`s now only 2nd or 3rd for the Chavanne/Leung issue or 4th or 5th for Salas/Sütterlin and so on.
Andersen again dominating it seems and not many left to challenge him.
Rodrigues less so for the day. But GC wise he is an interesting rider. 49th and +8 not the fastest start but his main terrain are the mountains anyway.
Kemboi the first of two remaining top specialists and he goes +2, which means provisional 4th for now. Definitely a solid bet for some sprint bonus seconds to take the GC lead at one point, just like most other sprinters though. Time gaps in general are in bonus second range.
McNulty might neither be the best climber nor time trialist but the combination makes him a very solid top rider here and surely he can go anywhere from win to top5. Anything less slowly would be disappointing I guess.
Today it`s +7.
Galta similar as him going +12.
Eastman on the road. A bit stronger in the mountains, less so in the hills. But other than that, the Oxxo rider also hopes for the big coup here. His TTT team is solid and while today at +9 might be a bit under expectations, his TT skills are superior over his prologue skills.
Latour next shows how close the fight for the whole top7 is. Any combination can really be possible without anyone under- or overperforming really.
The French takes +8 today.
Phinney is the last realistic challenger of Andersen. But while +2 is looking really good, it was never close. So Andersen takes the win, then Leung and Chavanne with official order yet to come. Then Phinney and Kemboi ahead of Salas and Sütterlin.
Pogacar got some nice training this off season and closed the gap to the very best or at least the very best but the top 2-3 stage racers in this league.
In Paris Nice his aim is to win.
+7 today is okay for him, he has to show in the mountains.
Haig the best climber next to Phinney and a solid time trialist.
+5 should be enough to be ahead of most direct rivals for the GC and any second could be worth it in the end.
So let`s see on official results now with exact orders after re-checking all those times.
