Stage 2 Report

Stage 2 is another one for the sprinters. The riders will leave yesterday’s finish town of Cascina and head to Arezzo. Longer today at 207k, the mountain sprints come mid-stage with a Cat 3 and a Cat 2, followed later by two sprint points. The last 60k is a circuit with a single small climb which could disrupt the chase and also serves as the finish.

Yesterday’s winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Aniolkowski joins two of yesterday’s flops in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Philipsen at the top of the favorites list.

More interest in the break today and it takes a while to form. But with 175k to go 3 riders get a 2 minute gap. The lucky winners are co-KOM leaders pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mos.png Atkins and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Katrasnik (Atkins wears the jersey) along with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/grm.png Würtz, who lost all that time yesterday after the puncture.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/01.jpg

By the time they reach the first climb, with 147, to go, their lead is up to 6’34. The climb is a Cat 3 and climbs 5k to San Casciano Val di Pesa.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/02.jpg

Würtz takes maximum points from Katrasnik but the latter gets the virtual KOM lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/03.jpg

118k to go the leaders are on the second climb, the Poggio Alla Croce, Cat 2. Their lead is down to 5’02 with the Popo4Ever team of the race leader joining Polar, Tryg and cycleYorkshire in doing the chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/04.jpg

Würtz again takes maximum points ahead of Katrasnik and Atkins.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/05.jpg

The remaining points go to domestiques. Katrasnik will wear the jersey tomorrow, he has 22, Atkins on 18 and Würtz on 16.

At the first sprint point Katrasnik is the winner, Atkins 2nd. The Cedavita rider was 3rd on GC to start the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/06.jpg

80k to go and the gap is down to 2’37. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Zumer on the front doing most of the work. Behind him for Tryg are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/trg.png Holm Jorgensen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/trg.png Norsgaard, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/trg.png Pedersen. The cycleYorkshire riders are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Lazkano and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Gloag, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Antonelli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Oldani for Polar. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kng.png Gidich well placed in his Kazakh NC jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/07.jpg

Katrasnik adds 6 more seconds to his GC position at the 2nd sprint point. Würtz 2nd this time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/08.jpg

41k to go and the lead is down to 45 seconds. The peloton is crossing the start-finish line on the circuit for the 2nd of 6 times. The sprinters will be glad to rehearse the climb to the finish. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Gladysh on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/09.jpg

25k to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Varga on the front now, Würtz has a small gap on the other two but just 34 seconds on the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/10.jpg

Würtz is caught and the break is over with 19k and about two laps to go.

Under the 5k banner about 50 riders have been split off the back although it looks like they should be able to close. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/oxf.png Higuita and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Padun among the riders behind the split. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mos.png Atkins and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Katrasnik are further back and it looks like they will be gapped so their time bonuses won’t be relevant.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Lauk on the front with 2.2k to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Philipsen on his wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/trg.png Demare next with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/trg.png Pedersen on his wheel. On the left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Aniolkowski are fighting for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Yates’ wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/12.jpg

The peloton navigates a few turns and hits the bottom of the finishing climb with 800 meters to go. Yates on the front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tti.png Banaszek, Cullaigh, Philipsen, Demare, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Pidcock in the next row.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/13.jpg

400 meters Banaszek with the lead on the inside, then Cullaigh and Philipsen. Demare and Pidcock next. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen and Aniolkowski are the next two. Grade is over 6%. Yates would have been good on this finish but has focused on supporting Cullaigh on this stage and is dropping back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/14.jpg

200 meters, Banaszek with a slight edge on Philipsen but Demare making good ground through the middle. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ziz.png Thijssen try to fight his way into contention.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/15.jpg

But Cullaigh, Demare and Philipsen all fade to varying degrees and with 100 meters to go it is Pidcock vs Banaszek.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Pidcock wins the stage. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tti.png Banaszek couldn’t quite hold on and settles for 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/17.jpg

A hard charging pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ziz.png Thijssen takes 3rd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Philipsen is the best of the favorites in 5th with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mos.png Nommela getting up for 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/18.jpg

It looked like it would be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/trg.png Demare’s day for a moment and the finish should have suited him but he fades to 7th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Aniolkowski 8th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/jur.png Groves, who also would have liked the finish on paper, only gets 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/oxf.png Marin completes the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/19.jpg

Only a handful of riders lose time but they include Katrasnik and Atkins taking them out of the GC. Katrasnik does get the KOM lead.

Pidcock and Aniolkowski have the GC lead with Polish rider ahead on placings which means he also has the points jersey. Pidcock leads the young rider competition.
