Volta a Portugal - Stage 6

Volta a Portugal

Stage 6

165.4 Hill Top Finish

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S6/01.jpg

Skujins is again at the top of the punchers list. He should be prepared for the single ascent up Viano do Castelo (the non-cobbled side). Look for Schmid and Valter to be towards the front.

The attacks come fast and furious from those hoping to be in the breakaway after the descent off the startline. 8 riders get away: Novardianto, Natarov, Van den Broek, Van Poucke, Daniel, Shirota, and Singh. Mugisha and Singh are the only riders who has scored in the KOM so far with 21 and 7 points respectively. If used correctly, Mugisha could grab the lead at the top of the 3rd category climb. Of course, the finishing climb also has points. Van Poucke is the best on GC at 2:29 behind. 140km to go and the breakaway has 3:00.

Interesting play from Xero to put Novardianto into the breakaway to help protect Pidcock’s GC today. We’ll see if things change later in the stage and they’re expected to still work.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S6/03.jpg

Behind in the peloton, five teams are managing the early pace, for the likely subjects. Fastned, Jura GIANTS, Aker-MOT, Tinkoff Team – La Datcha, and Grieg-Maersk. Grieg-Maersk is the confusing one – either this is to ensure no KOM contenders jump off the front or Gebrezgabihier is on a great day. Oxxo-Frisby refuses to contribute but has Eastman protected in the front positions. 110km to go and the break reaches its maximum allowance at 5:00.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S6/04.jpg

Alto de Covide is the longest climb of the race so far at 9.0km 4% - still a 3rd category. Mugisha starts the climb in front with 86km to go. The gap is still 4:33 and no major moves on the lower slopes of the climb. Simply too long left to go on the stage.
The peloton does start their move on the climb though. 5.0km to go in the climb and gap is down to 3:20 and dropping.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S6/05.jpg

It’s not to be for Mugisha! Tough luck for the Rwandan. Celebrations go Van Poucke who takes the 6 points. Shirota strongly takes 2nd with Novardianto a fast finisher for 2 points. No one is dropped in the acceleration and they head into the steep run off the mountain with 75km to go. The gap back out to 3:45 as the sprinters leading the peloton decide not to lose all their energy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S6/06.jpg

50km to go and the gap is 2:50. An interesting development in the front group as Novardianto refuses to pull through anymore. What could Xero have planned? A jump by Pidcock off the front? A late breakaway attack or is this simple domestique work not to lose time and resources later on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S6/07.jpg

The 20km kite shows in the background with not much race to run. Only 1:20 between the front and the peloton. Singh is pushing as hard as he can in support of Shirota who is also now skipping turns. All others appearing to work.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S6/08.jpg

10km later and the breakaway has extended to 1:25. Singh is dropped after giving so much all day and others try to break down the group further, but everyone is still strong. 6.5km before the climb starts. The GC group needs to put in their work now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S6/09.jpg

Shirota is pushing the pace under the 5km banner and it’s still a gap of 1:15. Just how much energy do these guys have left. Daniel looks strong after a few failed attacks as does Van Poucke. Singh is just now picked up by the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S6/10.jpg

2.5km to go and Shirota puts in a burst from the front of the group. All look ready to follow at the moment, but Daniel and Novardianto are closest on the wheel. Van Poucke tries to hold on strong, but drops the wheel with the other 4. 2km to go and the first three have an extra 15 seconds on the rest of the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S6/11.jpg

1.5km to go and Van Poucke jumps across as well looking very spry. Mugisha looks cooked with the other two able to hold pace but not close the gap at all. Daniel still in 2nd position ready to attack when the situation calls for it. One final steep section remaining.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S6/12.jpg

Van Poucke showcases his strength with an attack at 1.3km and leads the group under the flamme rouge. Novardianto appears ready to follow while Shirota and Daniel hesitated by haven’t been gapped yet.

In the peloton, Galta is on the front but not pushing any major pace. No GC fighting so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S6/13.jpg

500m to go and Van Poucke has a gap but looks out of legs. Shirota still strong and now in 2nd after waiting to put in their dig. Novardianto needed a 1km plateau on the top as he is starting to struggle. Daniel clawing his way still, but no major contest yet unless he finds a final energy reserve.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S6/14.jpg

200m to go and Van Poucke went too early it seems. Shirota is right along side and still accelerating. Novardianto isn’t giving up as the gradient does flatten out up top. Daniel no longer in the picture.

In the GC group, the punchers are sprinting for the remaining top 10 spots with Valter and Pidcock at the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S6/15.jpg

Shirota wins! A beautiful breakaway win for Sony – Force India who uses smart team tactics in the breakaway. Van Poucke just barely holds off Novardianto at the summit for 2nd and 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S6/16.jpg

Daniel is 4th as he holds off the peloton. Sadly, the remaining breakaway riders are swallowed up by the quickly approaching peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S6/17.jpg

Valter 5th to lead the peloton – he’ll be annoyed that they couldn’t catch the breakaway today. Pidcock protects the yellow jersey in 6th with Yates 7th for McCormick. Schmid well positioned in 8th. Galta and Phinney close out the top 10.
