Volta a Portugal
Stage 4
191.7km Flat Stage

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/01.jpg

Not much on the parcours today except for sprint points and a couple of 3rd category climbs. Should be a simple one for the sprinters teams, with Bol and Einhorn earning some thoughts from the favorite makers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/02.jpg

Being interested in the KOM points appears to be a requirement for the breakaway as it is Mugisha (11 pts), Montenegro (21 points), Sossa (15 points), and Van Gestel (15 points) the only four riders who can get away. Others tried but simply weren’t allowed away by a combination of Specialized and Tryg-Eni. With 170km to go, the gap is 3:00.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/03.jpg

The group attacks the 3rd category climb from almost a standstill with Van Gestel getting the best jump. Van Gestel just barely fails to holds off Mugisha but closes the gap to Montenegro. Mugisha now on 17 points, Van Gestel 19 and Montenegro 23. 130km left and a 7min gap to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/04.jpg

Another close battle for the KOM should go to Van Gestel this time with Mugisha 2nd. Sossa nudges out Montenegro for the final points of the day leaving Van Gestel with the jersey at the end of the day! What a battle before the upcoming hill stages. 82km to go and a gap of 4:30

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/05.jpg

After a few KOM frustrations, Montenegro takes out his frustrations on the first sprint point taking the win. Mugisha and Van Gestel appear to follow in that order with Sossa present, but missing the points. Behind, Tinkoff, Specialized, and Sauber are in control of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/06.jpg

The 2nd sprint point of the day also goes to the breakaway of course, everyone still contributing. Mugisha takes the win, Montenegro and Van Gestel getting the remaining points. Sossa really wishing the classification went four deep. The breakaway has 3:00 over the peloton with 52km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/07.jpg

The 3rd and final sprint point is exactly like the previous one. Mugisha, Montenegro, Van Gestel with Sossa outside the scoring. The only thing that changes is the distance to the finish – just 30km to go and 1:41 to the peloton, but the peloton seems committed, particularly Sauber and Tinkoff Team – La Datcha. Specialized join the chase with 20km to go and the gap under 1 minute.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/08.jpg

14km to go and the gap is just 30 seconds and Mugisha is already being dropped. I fear that could be a sign that the break is done for. Specialized is really pushing hard to ensure this comes back, but the firepower doesn’t seem there to control all the way to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/09.jpg

9km to go and the catch is made, but Coutinho is already 2nd wheel and there’s lots of sprinters right on the front. Marin, Hodeg, Rodenberg, Steimle, Stash, and Bol are all right at the front amongst others. Potocki left on the front to push the pace but with no other leadout for Coutinho.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/10.jpg

5k to go and the mess continues. Hibatullah is now leading to keep the pace high for Einhorn, but no other lead-out men are there for him. Mamykin is also leading to get the pace up for Banaszek who is 5 wheels back on the left hand side. Walscheid has one man for leadout while Coutinho appears to be finding two more men to support. This could be a messy one.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/11.jpg

3k to go and this is a lot more organized. Milan leads out Dzamastagic ahead of Coutinho. Walschied positioned on Ho but right on Coutinho. Evenepoel is up on the left, potentially helping Van der Kooij. Havik also jumping to support Bauhaus who is on the completely other side of the road. Forssell is still there as is Stash and Einhorn.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/12.jpg

2.0km to go and Tikhonin has slingshot along the rail with Banaszek in his wheel to take the lead but is it too early?! Dzamastagic taking over for Coutinho with Einhorn now perfectly on Coutinho’s wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/13.jpg

1.4km to go and the leadouts are done. Banaszek jumps out front with Coutinho trying not to leave a gap. Einhorn and the rest of the sprinters are still directly in wheels.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/14.jpg

800m and still Banaszek! Coutinho trying to come around but Einhorn is now sprinting for good. Forssell the best of the rest with Hodeg looking strong in 5th alongside Stash. Willems and Andersen holding their own for now. Rodenberg and Pidcock are probably the farthest back that anyone could challenge in the yellow and white respectively.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/15.jpg

400m to go and the favorites are cooked. Banaszek almost 15th already with Coutinho and Einhorn fading fast alongside. Stash is taking the inside line with Forssell trying to hold strong. Van der Kooij also well positioned with Bauhaus still sprinting too. The riders on the right appear to have taken the much worse line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/16.jpg

100m to go and the whole sprint is switched again. Hodeg now the leader on the right with Bauhaus and Van der Kooij 2nd/3rd. Stash struggling but holding on. Mareczko in good position behind Hodeg with Rodenberg the same behind Van der Kooij.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/17.jpg

It’s Hodeg! Van der Kooij 2nd for a good result as well while Bauhaus takes the final podium spot for the day. Mareczko 4th, Rodenberg 5th to keep the GC lead. Steimle 6th, Sureada 7th, Pidcock 8th, Stash 9th and Bol 10th complete the top 10.
