Volta a Portugal
Stage 3
177.9km Hilly Stage
It’s Skujins who gets the nod from the bookies heading into stage 3. Getting a hilly stage would certainly make attendance worth it here! Depending on the final climbs, don’t be surprised to see a sprinter make the final group.
The first attacks are off in an effort to form the daily break. Montenegro, Sossa and Noia are the first three up the road. Noia in great GC position if he can manage to hold on to the final, even in a full group. A few other attacks don’t go anywhere.
Montenegro takes the first sprint point, Sossa 2nd and Noia 3rd. Noia now only 9 seconds back on GC. Just a bit into the stage and the break has 2:30. The small 4th category climb immediately after the sprint point goes in exactly the same order, as Noia struggles on the stepper sections. The KOM jersey is definitely up for grabs today with Van Gestel only on 15 points.
Heading toward the 2nd category climb, the gap stabilizes around 4:00 between breakaway and peloton with around 140km to go.
The 2nd categorized Serra de Lousa presents 10 points for the winner on the top as well as a few points for the peloton. The break takes it at a slow pace to keep Noia in the group with 110km to go still. Montenegro 1st again, ahead of Sossa and then Noia who holds on. That puts Montenegro tied for the KOM lead. Back in the peloton, the three KOM scorers from yesterday fight for the remaining positions with Mugisha ahead of Singh. Van Gestel will be upset to miss out, especially over less than a wheel. Once the peloton crests, the break holds a gap of 5:00.
On the descent, we see a number of teams contributing in the peloton. Tryg-Eni, Fastned, Xero Racing, Jura GIANTS and Kraftwerk Man Machine are all interested in contributing at this time. That said, they aren’t exactly racing down the mountain.
At the sprint point that closes the major descent, Montenegro takes another win! Noia is 2nd here, taking another 4 bonus seconds – now just 5 off the GC lead. Sossa 3rd. Gap still 5:12 with 91km to go but the road starts going uphill again toward the category 3 climb.
The 3rd category climb causes the breakaway to begin losing their gap. It’s Montenegro again taking the lead here ahead of Sossa and Noia. They all gain important points in the KOM battle, but Montenegro takes the outright lead while Sossa is now tied for 2nd. The larger issue for them is the drop in distance from the peloton where it has come to 3:30 in just 10km of chasing.
The final sprint point of the day is crucial as a Noia win could catapult them into the temporary GC lead – depending on who gets seconds at the finish. The photo from the organizers is a bit unclear at the finish. It looks like Noia, then Montenegro, then Sossa, but the mid-race results say otherwise.
More importantly, back behind there is cause. Undulating terrain has left a group of 34 riders… ahead of the rest of the peloton. This group includes Rodenberg (currently leading GC), Phinney, Eastman, Schmid, Almeida, Pidcock, Skujins, Schlegel, Valter, and Galta as the major names. Only a gap of 39 seconds to 108 riders behind, which still sees other groups demolished by the strong pace to catch the break. 1:49 from the front 3 to the Peloton, 39 seconds from the peloton to the group of 108. With 31.5km to go.
The group comes back together shortly with all the major players before reaching 25km to go, but expect the climbing and descending to break groups again before the finish. No longterm GC riders outside of this group, but lots of TT specialists have been dropped so the GC rankings will surely change today.
That’s the breakaway being caught with 20km to go. Noia is trying one more push, but it’s not worth it. If he can hold onto the finish though, this could be a great day. Otherwise, there’s lots of punchers ready to attack. 99 riders left, the biggest names dropped are Ndayisenga, Errazkin, Van Gils and Leemreize.
Just as the road goes uphill with 14.4km to go and 2.1 before the next KOM point, Valter puts in the first major attack of the race so far. A significant delay before Gebrezgabihier starts the chase gives him 15 seconds in 400m.
400m from the top of the climb and Tesfaye Heyi did the work to bring Valter back. Steimle is the next attacker with no real response and should get the KOM points and potentially a breakaway. Rikunov and Wright roll over the top but the gap to Steimle is now 29 seconds with 12km to go!
5km to go and Steimle is doing everything they can to stay away to the finish. They have 27 seconds still but are clearly starting to struggle on this final climb. Schmid can be seen behind him getting ready to launch an attack. Valter and Pidcock seem most prepared to follow.
Steimle can’t hold on, but the attackers do get away from what is now a 40-man peloton. The attackers are Valter, Pidcock, Schmid and Rumac -as they appear at the top of the climb with 22seconds until the finish with 3.2km to go. Skujins is doing the chasing himself with Rodenberg remarkably still present. No top tier GC men are outside the 40-man peloton, with Lopez Nolasco struggling behind after supporting Eastman. The 40 person group is rather spread so some riders could still be dropped from that group.
1km to go and the catch is made, but positioning is crucial. The first 10 wheels are Valter, Schmid, Pidcock, Rumac, Rodenberg, Yates, Skujins, Coutinho, Phinney and Bol. That make-up tells you just how combined a grouping this is of sprinters, punchers and GC contenders.
400m to go and the order is the same more or less. Schmid trying to pass by Valter the biggest change while Phinney looks strong behind. Pidcock also powering strong in 3rd.
And powering away Pidcock does with a HUGE final 400m to take a commanding win! Schmid 2nd, Valter 3rd, Rumac 4th!
The top 9 is finished by Yates, Bol, Coutinho, Phinney and Rodenberg. Johannessen takes 10th off camera.
No podium pictures today but with Pidcock’s win, Rodenberg stays in the GC lead by 2 seconds!
