Volta a Portugal
Stage 2
195.1km Flat Stage

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S2/01.jpg

Favorites put Bol as the top favorite for the sprint although there’s lots of riders capable of grabbing the victory. A few that will also be looking for bonus seconds and a chance to take the yellow jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S2/02.jpg

Singh is the first to attack and Van Gestel jumps on that move immediately. Mugisha is slower to react but makes it a group of 3 quickly and they establish themselves as the trio of the day. 180km left and the gap is 3:00.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S2/03.jpg

The first sprint point comes around 168km to go and there’s a small sprint for the points. Van Gestel looks clear to take 1st ahead of Singh and then Mugisha. Gap is 5:00

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S2/04.jpg

The first 4th category climb comes almost immediately after but isn’t a major challenge with no gradients above 5%. Mugisha was the first to accelerate, but it looks like Van Gestel takes the win here too. Singh clearly 3rd. 159km and the gap is up to 7:15. Another sprint point soon and then a major plateau.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S2/05.jpg

The second sprint point sees Van Gestel take another victory… sensing a trend so far. Singh 2nd at this one ahead of Mugisha. Gap to the peloton is 8:32 with 146km to go. A variety of teams on the front of the peloton, with no one the “main” contributor. From here on the gap does descend though. Sauber, Aker-MOT, Tinkoff, and Specialized probably contributing most.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S2/06.jpg

It’s 90km to go and the top of the 2nd 4th category climb. Gap has been dropping steadily to 5:15, but no danger yet. Looks like a very similar finishing result as our sprints with Van Gestel taking it over Singh and Mugisha in that order. Singh faster this time than before.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S2/07.jpg

The final KOM point of the day will matter for points, but Van Gestel has already taken the jersey for tomorrow. Van Gestel makes it a clean sweep with Mugisha 2nd here. That means Mugisha will hold 2nd place in that competition, Singh 3rd. Back behind in the peloton, a small gap is created due to the undulations. It’s closed up quickly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S2/08.jpg

We jump to the final sprint point, which comes 16km away from the finish. In what was smart from the sprinters, they’ve left the breakaway out there so not to need to spend two bullets in the final 20km. Aker-MOT doing almost all the pulling now. Van Gestel attacks away from the other two to gain the points and power on. He earns max points ahead of Singh while Mugisha struggles behind. The Rwandan does earn the 3rd place points. Van Gestel is now alone with 55 seconds to the peloton at 15km to do.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S2/09.jpg

Tinkoff Team – La Datcha and Specialized are back at the front with 13km as they officially catch Mugisha. Singh looking pooped between them and Van Gestel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S2/10.jpg

11km to go and Singh is now dragged in. Van Gestel is really struggling up this final kicker toward the 10km to go banner but still has 40 seconds. It doesn’t appear like enough but the catch hasn’t been made.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S2/11.jpg

No breakaway heroics today. Everyone is back together and the sprint trains will line it up in this minor descent to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S2/12.jpg

Skujins leading the train for Banaszek with 3km to go. Coutinho and Specialized have had a train for a while but it’s been swallowed to the back. Andersen, the yellow jersey holder is ready to contest, as are many sprinters. Einhorn and Rodenberg closest to the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S2/13.jpg

1.5km to go and Skujins has pulled off but is still up front. Einhorn slides all the way across to find Noia who is trying to lead him out while Specialized is also finding space along the right side. Steimle joins Rodenberg in good position while Bralirwa appears to be sprinting with Willems. Bol stuck in the middle with lots of others still ready to compete.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S2/14.jpg

800m and it is still Tikhonin leading out Banaszek who hasn’t officially jumped. Dzamastagic is 3rd bringin up Coutinho and leaving the right side rail. Bol has found space alongside Steimle while Rodenberg is awaiting Banaszek’s move. Forssell present there as well ready to try for bonus secons. Andersen ready to contest as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S2/15.jpg

300m to go and the lineup is straight across the road. The front row is probably Banaszek, Rodenberg, Steimle with row 1.5 as Willems and Bol on opposite sides. Marezcko, Stash, Forssell, Marin, Coutinho, Andersen, and Dzamastagic all in row 2. Coutinho and Mareczko appear to be moving quickest of that group but unclear if there’s any space for them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S2/16.jpg

Rodenberg looks to take it from the front angle! Banaszek appears 2nd!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S2/17.jpg

The helicopter confirms it! Rodenberg 1st, Banaszek, Steimle, Bol and Forssell the top 5! Coutinho, Willems, Andersen, Stash, and Mareczko take the remaining top 10 spots.

A few mini gaps as folks sprint in, but nothing that should concern the organizers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S2/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S2/19.jpg

Rodenberg had kept himself close enough that the bonus seconds push him into the GC lead! A fantastic result for Tryg-Eni.
