Tour of Qatar
The final sprint stage in Qatar is the shortest at 122k. The road goes from the Sealine Beach Resort to Doha Corniche with just 1 sprint on the way.
The big two are the top favorites again, and so far, have lived up to that billing.
After a bunch of failed attempts Antonijevic and Robeet get a gap, they have just over a minute with 15k gone. Novardianto trying to bridge across solo.
Antonijevic wins the sprint with 92k to go. Novardianto still 18 seconds down, the pack at 1’52. The gap hasn’t grown that much as there were multiple additional attacks. Those seem to be over now.
50k to go, the gap at 2 minutes having never gone much over 3. Novardianto did reach the front two to make it a threesome up front. They are on the finishing circuit now. Same three riders working as yesterday.
19k to go, lead is 39 seconds with Kalf, Van der Kooij and Swift on the front. The corners on the circuit are causing some gaps, right now there is a split after 70 riders.
11k to go it looks like it is over for the break as Veyhe is once again the man to lower the boom. The front group is down to 56. The pure prologue guys, other than Andersen, who is helping with the chase, are all losing time as it stands now.
6k to go. Veyhe still on the front, the trains getting ready to launch. There are still gaps behind but they are small.
3.9k, the Rabobank (Kooij, Van der Kooij, Grosu) and Aker trains (Andersen, Peak, Groenewegen) are on the front. Gaviria on Groenewegen’s wheel. Wippert has Cullaigh well placed right now.
2.4k similar situation, Aker look like they are trying to squeeze out the Rabobank train. Still a 57-rider front group with a 44-second gap to a 49-rider group and then another 44 seconds to the rest of the peloton.
Disaster for Rabobank as Aker trap them along the barriers and in a flash Grosu is 20 riders back. Really everyone on the inside of Hsu in the last picture was cut off. With 1.3k to go Peak on the front, will he run Groenewegen in to the ground again? Gaviria on Groenewegen’s wheel that hasn’t always been good either. Next three are Van der Lijke, Hayakawa and Hsu.
800 meters Groenewegen about to hit the front. Cullaigh has open road to the left as he and Kragh Andersen emerge the best from the carnage along the railing. Maybe Cullaigh can redeem his race with a big charge here.
400 meters, both Aker riders going backwards as Gaviria gets his nose ahead. Kragh Andersen is the fastest but has a lot of ground to make up. Aniolkowski and Manninen also moving fast and are better positioned. Grosu is well back, there are also still multiple gaps in the peloton.
200 meters, Gaviria is hard man to pass. Hayakawa closest to him. Groenewegen hanging on better today, he could get his first solid result.
Grosu can see his GC lead evaporating up front. Gaviria has just 100 meters. Next three are Hayakawa, Mannien and Aniolkowski but it doesn’t look like they can catch him.
Or will it be another win for the PCT, Hayakawa almost up to Gaviria as they reach the line.
The photo goes to Hayakawa, he has been great all race. Gaviria follows Grosu in missing out on back-to-back wins by a tiny margin but he will take over the GC lead. Manninen is third and then Aniolkowski. The big winners today are the PT teams who didn’t send sprinters, as they are watching the PCT boys steal a lot of points.
Kanter with a strong finish for 5th. Then Hsu, Kragh Andersen and Samolenkov. Cullaigh and Groenewegen have some of their best results, with 9th and 10th but that surely isn’t what they came for.
Gaviria moves from 9 seconds down to 9 seconds up on Grosu in the GC. That seems like a hard gap for the Romanian to overhaul tomorrow. He may have some sharp words for Aker. Aniolkowski reclaims third on 32 seconds and then there are four riders between 41 and 45 seconds, Kragh Andersen, Jakobsen, Hayakawa and Halvorsen. The Dane by far the best TT rider among them so he will hope to finish best in that crew and likely catch Aniolkowski who struggles in that discipline.
No time gaps are awarded as fading riders bridge the groups together. The vast majority of riders will start the day 1’20 behind the leader tomorrow.
Gaviria also takes over the points jersey and will likely win that as well with Grosu dropping to 2nd. Aniolkowski is third, ahead of Hayakawa and their places in that competition are safer than in the GC.
Duric keeps the young rider jersey one more day, he will lose that tomorrow but he has picked up some nice points along the way.
