The Mount Lofty stage on paper is looking the most difficult with a circuit that has to be 4 times with another, even longer uphill section right off the start.
Seeing it`s just 113 km in length, the riders won`t get a real period to recover today except for the short descent each lap.
Today Christen has to show if he is able to challenge the best, though it`s easily a day for the puncheurs normally.
Bookies have Sagan, Demare and Bagioli first but Arndt as more climber puncheur is rated high as well.
The first ascent on Mt Lofty was no less than 11 km in length and 4,2 % in average.
6 riders reach the top first and apparently also form todays break as it`s a gap of almost 3 min till now.
Staune-Mittet
Smit
Phelan
Burnett
Naud
Yzeiraj
Smit, Phelan, Naud is the order at the KoM line. It`s a Cat. 2, which moves them up into the late top10 but with three Cat.3 on the way it`s in theory possible for them to get the KoM lead even with todays stage alone.
The regular circuit ascent is 4,3 km and also 4,3 % in average.
Smit takes the 2nd KoM ahead of Phelan and this is also the order at the third.
This moves Smit into shared 2nd with just -4 to Mundle and Pheland in 4th another 2 points down.
Other than those two, the smaller points are spread over the remaining breakaway riders so that none of them is even in the top10 yet, which means 6 points maximum in total.
Burnett at this point also the first rider dropped, so that AirNZ is also without number advantage in the group.
The peloton is entering the 4th climb and only 38 riders are left in group 1 with the same amount in group 2 and a gruppetto of 104 riders.
In that second group some riders, that surely hoped to be up there.
Edmondson, 11th
Camrda, 16th
Walscheid, 19th (in gruppetto)
Villella, 27th
Ahlstrand, 29th
Christen sitting nicely in the first positions of group 1 and alos riders such as Bagioli are up there in 10th position this time after being badly placed on earlier stages.
Chasing though are Pszczolarski and Teutenberg, so not the very best puncheurs yet. 2 min the gap with 33 km to go.
There it is. Smit takes the Cat.3 and moves into the KoM lead with 26 points.
Phelan again 2nd going up to 3rd, 4 points down. Todays leader Mundle right in between them.
10 km to go and a gap of 1'37!
Chasing are Cervelo with Vacek/Izagirre
UBS with Van Asbroeck
Manada with Murillo
31 riders are left in this group of GC riders.
Kinoshita, Christen, Sagan, McCarthy are the riders in the first rows then. In especially the young GC leader shows a sensational performance here without much team support even as the actual leader Calmejane couldn`t show less interest day for day.
Just a bit over 3 km Smit shows, that he is strongest today. Not only the KoM, he wants the stage now and while GC wise this is no danger for the favourites, stage wise they give up quite a few points in this race here, in especially since Christen is in the GC lead.
As if they had known. Exact same spot and the first attacks behind as well.
Müller showing a much better and more focussed performance than last season and initiates this. Behind him Turgis, Kelderman and McCarthy.
Kinoshita, Sagan, Boswell, Jensen line up next alongside Moscon, Lagane, Borges, Demare and also Christen is trying to avoid a gap.
1,2 km and Smit having a 34s gap! The peloton behind with an even bigger gap and it looking good for the South African.
Naud and also Yzeiraj are dropped here.
Phelan and Staune-Mittet the last riders potentially challenging Smit for the stage.
1,3km and no favourite was able to open a gap before. Turgis is trying again though.
Behind a group of 11 lost contact.
Maybe the biggest surprise at the end of the favourite gorup. Not that riders such as Borges, Demare, Bagioli amd a bit ahead Waeytens start to struggle.
But that a couple of sprinters are still left. Coutinho, El Sabbahi, Feiereisen and Mudgway.
Müller, Kelderman, McCarthy, Boswell, Sagan, Jensen, Kinoshita, Moscon, Lagane, Christen are the riders ahead of those in that order.
Smit can celebrate with 200m to go. The gap melts a bit with Phelan being faster right now but he won`t care about the gap.
Stage win and KoM for him.
Phelan in 2nd ahead of Staune-Mittet and also Yzeiraj was having better legs towards the end.
It`s not really surprising to see this happening but with 1,1 km to go, this still hurts of course.
Christen can`t follow and looks totally in pain. He clearly went above level by quite a bit and for quite a while.
Ahead of him the sprinters but also the trio around Bagioli, Demare and Waeytens struggle to avoid a gap.
Turgis able to keep up till the end taking 5th as Naud was caught just in time.
Sagan, Kinoshita, Kelderman, Boswell, Moscon, McCarthy, Jensen, Müller, Lagane and Borges all s.t. behind, some even with some bonus seconds still, which GC wise see Jensen taking the lead ahead of Boswell and Lagane!
Jensen without bonus seconds today and Boswell only with small as 10th. Seeing the gap is at 2s in between and also Lagane only at 13s without seconds neither, this really could have swapped a lot with 1-2 positions higher for them.
Demare and Bagioli couldn`t keep up and have a 27s gap opening ahead. Same for Waeytens and the sprinters.
Christen lost another 46s and was passed by a couple of riders from the later groups even. He drops to 12th in the GC, which obviously is still fantastic, but those 1100 m really changed quite a lot for him and the team.
Good news for him that next to the point competition he also remains in the U25 lead due to Bagioli not finishing with the GC group.
