Tour Down Under - Stage 4
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/TdU/mg24_04_tdu_PCM1050.jpg

The Willunga Stage changed significantly over the years. Just like last year it`s now an easier, flattish stage with some bumps and also a slightly uphill finish without being a really tough hill stage.
Usually something for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/trg.png Demare. Though the other puncheurs or maybe even the sprinters might want a piece as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/TdU/mg24_04_tdu_PCM1051.jpg

6 breakaway riders today including the KoM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Mundle. Having one rider from Liechtenstein in a peloton is already rare, having him in the break makes it even less often but today it`s two riders with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbc.png Sprenger being around as well.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Varga adds an additional engine.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Sitchinava, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Lemus Davila and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/anz.png Brown complete the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/TdU/mg24_04_tdu_PCM1062.jpg

Sprenger was the most successful in the KoM hunt today taking 10 points in today, but as Mundle at least got 4, he takes the lead after sharing it with Christen before. As GC leader he will struggle to score a lot more points at the moment.
While Sprenger goes up to shared 3rd Brown as only other taking 4 points today, which are his first in that ranking.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/TdU/mg24_04_tdu_PCM1066.jpg

Mundle and Sprenger prove to be strongest here and attack with 8,5 km to go as the gap is still 90s.
Only Sitchinava with them.
Could it be another breakaway win? Not helping that Lotto - Caloi isn`t working as much as other GC leader teams likely would do.
Then again a lot more to lose for the big teams and so the stage favourites should really doing a bit more starting with Tryg, who are having a rather anonymous race so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/TdU/mg24_04_tdu_PCM1071.jpg

Instead Genii Hyundai is picking up now. With Jensen they have the stage winner of the Corkscrew stage and also the best placed puncheur in the GC. He must feel well again but then again the gap is still over 90s with the six riders back together in front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/TdU/mg24_04_tdu_PCM1074.jpg

It`s 2,3 % already but still more than 1 km to go. The gap is looking comfortable now and Varga is "attacking". Brown and Lemus Davila next. So the situation totally changed now in the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/TdU/mg24_04_tdu_PCM1079.jpg

It`s 5 % right now and still getting steeper. The KoM for the earlier laps is reached soon, the finish is a bit later.

Surprisingly the strongest uphill rider in Lemus Davila has a gap ahaead of him next to Mundle.
The other 4 are kind of next to each other fighting for the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/TdU/mg24_04_tdu_PCM1081.jpg

Sprenger looks strongest, Brown next to him, then Sitchinava a bit later.
Lemus Davila in 4th position having found his legs again.
It`s just under 10 %. Very hard and long final 200 m on that ramp.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/TdU/mg24_04_tdu_PCM1084.jpg

Brown struggled the most in the end, so that Lemus Davila was able to pass him. Though Sprenger still ahead of him and in especially Sitchinava, who was not the fastest in the end but the first over the line taking the stage for Popo4Ever.

Lemus Davila must have underestimate the positioning today as otherwise this could have been his win seeing his pace in the end.

Varga as 5th ahead of Mundle.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/TdU/mg24_04_tdu_PCM1086.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/TdU/mg24_04_tdu_PCM1088.jpg

Missed opportunity for the peloton. 1'13 in the end as no team really went for it to make the catch.
Demare looked like the clear winner of that sprint but Borges just moved past him in the end stealing a few bonus seconds.
Lagane as 9th with the regular bonus with Sagan coming in as 10th.

GC wise Christen reached the finish within that group and defends his lead.

Starting with the 53rd today, another few seconds were lost in a split. Some sprinters such as Ahlstrand were hit while GC wise we don`t see big changes.
Rider such as Calmejane, Yates, Vliegen lost more time today, but they didn`t play a big role anyway after the first few stages.
