Stage 3 sees 5 climbs of Menglers Hill. 4,7 km with 3,7 % in average. So not the hardest as only the final part is a bit steeper. The opposite direction would have been the tougher climb, now it`s more a technical descent instead.
Officials rate this stage a flat one for the sprinters, though obviously having a few hill skills won`t hurt with the amount of hill climbing neither.
Definitely a perfect stage for Demare as no other top 15 sprinter is even any good on the hills, which should improve his chances as top sprinter.
Three riders in todays break.
Sprenger
Sanogo
Nikiema
All being 2'28 behind GC leader Christen.
Nikiema easily is the best puncheur here and takes the first Cat. 4 ahead of Sprengler. The maximum today is 10 points though, which are only 6th in the rankings for now.
Climbing Menglers Hill for the 4th time towards the next KoM, the peloton has highered the pace and this results in quite a long stretched group and the first splits as well.
Some riders such as Calmejane, Arndt, Seigle, Terada, Varga are again not placed very well.
2/2 and provisional 6th for Nikiema in the KoM ranking. Same order as earlier. But while the gap was at 6 min once, it`s down to 2'20 with 39 km to go.
Mainly Specialized and the Minions are working behind, which shows a bit of a struggle here. GC leader Christen and his Lotto team are not really helping out at all. Having the actual team "leader" Calmejane showing a rather uninterested race here obviously doesn`t help neither.
25 km and a gap opened with 70 riders in the peloton and 49 riders behind.
Biggest name easily Bagioli, 22nd in GC but a rider that surely is hoping to still improve towards the top10.
Yates, Yudha, Tesfatsion, Zordan or 2nd in GC Ben Ameur are other names.
Big engines Dzamastagic and Gladysh working in the peloton not really helping right now on the flat.
Spark and McCormick at least working behind while Indosat around Bagioli is not really able to help as most of their team is even further behind. Well, Yudha kind of is there still.
Even Kinoshita is working now coming closer to the final uphill section. Though, he is not going as fast as before and the 2nd group just made it back. The climb is starting soon though and they all should position themselves a bit better this time as there is no longer a chance to make it back on that final descent.
Half way up the climb, the trio is caught. Specialized really did a great job here but now with the hardest bit it`s Minions taking over again and Kinoshita himself should make it a hard race.
And indeed only 58 riders make it over the top in the first group.
Group 2 includes riders such as Bagioli, Turgis, Yates,
Minions vs Specialzed now after cooperating all day.
Demare a bit behind still and not sure if his leadout van de Paar was planned like this. But he might even block him a bit.
Matthews Jiang Ahlstrand Dzamastagic Coutinho Boswell Lagane El Sabbahi Wouters Walscheid Feiereisen Perera Mudgway Kamberaj Contreras Venturini Kennaugh van de Paar Adomaitis Demare Lutsyshyn
Dzamastagic is definitely the better leadout here as he pulls Coutinho with him gapping the others.
Meanwhile Ahlstrand struggles as his leadout Jiang can`t match the speed of the others and kind of braking their train.
Good news for Kennaugh with Walscheid, Venturini, Lagane, Contreras and others behind as they can catch up to Coutinho`s wheel.
600 m and Coutinho in the wind. He is having 1-2 bike length to the others but those can still use his slipstream.
Ahlstrand vs Walscheid fighting for it.
Demare slowly coming forwards as well on the right side of the road.
Venturini, Lagane and Feiereisen in the row behind Ahlstrand/Walscheid.
200 m and it`s slowly getting difficult for Coutinho. Ahlstrand has reached him almost and pulling all the others with him.
Demare looking either blocked or exhausted, Contreras has passed him again.
Same with Walscheid, who can`t follow the pace and is passed by allrounders Venturini and Lagane, who could go for more bonus seconds again and also Wouters in the mix now.
Very tight finish here, in the end it`s Venturini, the only Indosat rider today, who was always in group 1!
El Sabbahi was missed somehow before, but he had a fast finish and up to 2nd even ahead of Ahlstrand, who couldn`t finish it today.
Wouters and Feiereisen next ahead of Lutsyshyn and Stocker.
Then Demare with more bonus seconds, but 8th clearly is far off his expectations, not his race yet despite going into 4th GC.
Perera and Contreras follow, so that Lagane as 11th is missing the bonus seconds closely for the first time. Coutinho even dropped to 12th in the end.
Turgis as 61st tried his best to close the gap, but in the end they lose more than a minute today! Same for Yates, Ben Ameur, Zordan and others.
BUT to make the Indosat even better than an unexpected stage win: Bagioli somehow managed to fly down the descent and finished inside the first group not losing any time! With him his team mate Yudha, who likely had big impact on this as also Tesfatsion. Well done and hopefully for them the last stage with such struggle. Let`s call it the unexperience of the younger riders as all 3 belong to the top5 of the U25 ranking.
