Day 1 in the Tour Down Under, the actual PCT/CT stage race start of the 2024 season. The start will be an easier introduction with 156 km of just small hill and it`s definitely a day for the sprinters, so it`s Demare vs Ahlstrand vs the rest, which are lots of pretty decently backuped 78-79 sprinters.
189 riders can`t wait for the official go and while GC riders and sprinters line up in the middle, some breakaway experts can be seen already in the front rows. So who is going to attack first and more important for the crowds, what Aussie will be in the break. It`s a tough season for them, while team wise we saw the Aussie flag of Everesting, rider wise, it`s down to 4 Aussies in this years field. Alongside GC rider McCarthy, it`s just Hindley, Drizners and Phelan, who in parts could make solid break riders though.
Not sure the crowd is liking it a lot, but in case they want to go more regional, time to celebrate the 7 riders from New Zealand as well around Joel Yates as 2nd tier GC rider and lots of younger riders mainly riding for the home teams Spark Team NZ and Air New Zealand-Alfa Romeo.
20 km in and we have the break of 4 riders. No Aussie but already a rider to watch from the preview in the fields biggest engine Mundle.
He is joined by cobbler Insausti,
young TT talents Milesi and Terada.
The first of 2 sprints is taken by Mundle. Not the biggest surprise seeing his experience. Milesi and Terada next.
A mix of UBS, Minions and Specialized do the early work so that their GC riders and sprinters won`t lose their chances already. Everything in full control so far.
Sprint two and this time Insausti timed it right. Milesi again in 2nd with Mundle apparently 3rd.
Just a bit later the Parawa Hill has to be climbed. With 2,8 km it`s not the longest but in especially the first half is really steep making it an average of 7 % for the whole climb.
Mundle takes the Cat. 3 points with Terada and Milesi following.
The gap was reduced from 3:30 to 1:10 between both KoMs but the group will still take the Cat. 2 with 23 km to go.
The Nettle Hill is a bit shorter with 1,8 km only but even steeper at 8,5 % in average. This time the start is rather easy with the hardest parts being in the middle and end when the legs already start burning.
Again Mundle is the best uphill while Milesi and Terada are the next. It`s 16 points for the Simba Cement rider and 10 each for the two talents.
Insausti not really having had a shot at the KoM with 4 points only while Badilatti for UBS taking 2 minor points while working for his team.
A few riders lost contact at the climb but will be able to make it back afterwards. Still not the best sign of positioning for riders such as Villella, Vliegen, Izagirre, McKenna, Kanepejs, Zordan, Arndt, Lemus Davila ..., who are all around the 2nd to 3rd tier GC rider range and shouldn`t struggle a lot on those climbs.
With 11 km to go the break is caught. They might hold on to keep a decent GC with the sprint bonuses but it`s no surprise today.
Specialized for Coutinho has taken over the most now.
4 km and UBS is ruining all sprinter team hopes of a calm preperation. They did a lot of work already but mainly for GC rider Müller and no sprinter. Instead they go for the attack with 4km to go and it`s cobbler Jacobs, who surely can hurt the riders behind with his roleur skills.
Unfortunately for him he got no support by other strong men and so Specialized brought him back again with 3km to go but the preperations by some teams got disturbed and we see some riders too far behind and others without their support from 1 km earlier.
Riesebeek Dzamastagic El Sabbahi Walscheid Coutinho Mudgway Feiereisen Ahlstrand McCarthy Degenkolb Lagane Sagan Adomaitis- Lutsyshyn Pedersen- Demare- Kamberaj Perera Kennaugh Contreras
Riders after each "-" really need to hurry up as the gaps are opening.
Already Pedersen and Lutsyshyn have to fight to close it, while Demare could struggle to do so and the later almost impossible to make it back in time.
Riesebeek was doing okay until the 1 km mark. Though he had to reduce speed and others were able to close the gap. Dzamastagic likely should have opened his leadout a lot earlier but waited till now with Coutinho behind.
Ahlstrand next to him with Feiereisen but also already Demare behind. Then most sprinters in the mix.
Once Dzamastagic has taken over other sprinters starting their sprint as well and so Coutinho was maybe waiting a bit too long behind his leadout.
Instead it`s now Walscheid in pole position with 300m to go with a strong Mudgway behind him.
Then Coutinho, Adomaitis, El Sabbahi and Degenkolb.
Ahlstrand still on the right side of the road being in the wind for most of the time plus got blocked a bit by Riesebeek with Demare sitting behind the first bunch in 11th position and likely only fighting for any bonuses today.
Strong finish by Walscheid. He never slowed down on the last 250m and delivered Kraftwerk the stage win. Well, the team perfectly knew how to ride this apparently with Marco Haller, 2023 still in KMM colours won that exact stage last year.
Mudgway somehow still in 2nd. Never leaving the perfect wheel today was key for him to beat a lot of stronger sprinters. Coutinho in 3rd couldn`t fully complete the team`s effort today.
Adomaitis and El Sabbahi next ahead of Lutshyn, Lagane and Feiereisen with Ahlstrand and Demare at least getting small bonus seconds by completing the top10.
So GC wise Lagane one of the big winners here as he was able to grab decent bonuses on a stage not that suiting.
