Tour of Tasmania
Stage 1
Bicheno – St. Helens 212.1km
The stage 1 favorites list is headlined by Cullaigh, as expected. Kemboi stands out a couple spots above preview’s expectation with Manninen two spots lower than expectations. The profile shows a couple KOM points in the first section of the stage alongside a couple sprint points as well.
It’s Mosca with the first attack of the season and of the Tour of Tasmania. He’s joined by Berwick in the first two riders off the front.
At the first KOM, Mosca takes the top points ahead of Berwick while no other riders have made the breakaway. At the front of the peloton, Yatsevich takes the final KOM points of this first 3rd category climb.
The first sprint point comes quickly after and the TV cameras realize there isn’t much to show.
Mosca takes 1st and Berwick 2nd again.
Well, while there wasn’t a major fight for the first points, 3rd place is a major battle! Rajovic gets a full leadout to take the final points for 3rd. The gap extends to the breakaway afterward up to 3:00min with 170km to go. Over the flat section, that gap extends again to 7:00 as a maximum around 145km to go. Mosca leads most of the climbs and is taking longer turns as the clearly stronger rider in the break.
As the road heads uphill toward the final categorized climb of the day, the gap descends to 6:00min. Mosca takes the first place points again without issue and almost drops Berwick in the final ascent. Kanerva leads the peloton over to also take 2 points on the day and tie for 3rd in the standings. Just like before, the sprint point really isn’t in question and allows Mosca to take the full points.
Rajovic takes first place again in bunch sprint for 3rd. So third place overall, and gets another set of points and bonus seconds. His acceleration is just unmatched, especially in these sprints that start with less than 1km to go. Kemboi takes 4th, even though that doesn’t give anything. Still 110km to go and the gap goes down to 4:45 due to the sprint preparation. The teams leading the peloton throughout the stage have been Xero Racing, cycleYorkshire, and Tinkoff Team – La Datcha.
With 50km to go, the gap has dropped all the way to 2:10, and the breakaway is in view. The final 50km includes a long decline off the plateau that should extend the breakaway’s life, but there are tons of sprinters ready for a win. The dedication of these teams is very strong though as Skujins is seen on the front of the peloton with 37km to go. Areruya has been seen occasionally in the first 7 wheels as well in the attempt to bring the group back.
Mosca again leads the charge in the breakaway ahead of Berwick. With 31km to go, they crest the plateau and head toward the descent. There’s only a 1 minute gap, but they’re able to hold the gap on the descent. With 25km it flattens out and the gap plummets again to 49 seconds immediately.
With 17km to go, Mosca and Berwick are dead tired and are brought back into the peloton. Now it’s time for the sprint trains to get set-up and cycleYorkshire is the main team in line. Xero Racing is in 2nd best position now, but the 17km left are a lot of time to maneuver.
At the 10km to go banner, cycleYorkshire still has a commanding lead on the front to push the pace while also setting up their final lineup for Cullaigh behind. For Xero, Manninen is currently on the front, but that should change quickly. The rest of the sprinters are set-up behind Samolenkov with Stash and Silva very close behind.
With 5km to go, the leadout for Samolenkov is a bit disjointed, but preparing for the right hand turn. Ganna is out front on the left ready for Areruya to bring the Xero train for Manninen. Between, Kemboi sits alone alongside Peak, Gross, Nommela, Bol, and Van der Kooij. Rajovic has a much worse leadout now than at the intermediates and Cullaigh has a lot of wheels to get through.
3k to go and the Manninen train and the Cullaigh train have found their ways through to the front with the finish line in sight! Jakobsen looks in good position as he can choose either wheel, while Samolenkov, Gross and Rajovic are closest to the front on the right.
There’s a gap in the back of the peloton with about half the field off the back. Sometimes the timing is rather kind to these riders at the end, but that gap is more than nothing. Hirt, Lammertink, and many others are behind with negative implications for multiple reasons. There’s 1.8km to go.
1.3km to go and Cullaigh has a fantastic leadout! He’s still in the wheel and Samolenkov is not fully in the slipstream. Manninen has decided to slot to the lefthand side and is also only minorly slipstreaming. Rajovic is well-positioned for a top result while Bol is already in a full out sprint.
Cullaigh still holds the lead with 700m to go while Samolenkov is catching up a tad. Gross looks strong and moving forward while Bol is also gaining a slight bit of traction. Abdul Halil is coming from deep, but there’s lots of room on that side of the road. Manninen does not appear to be finding space or an opportunity to win, but the race isn’t over.
400m to go and the work of cycleYorkshire appears to be wearing off. Cullaigh has been caught and there’s 6 across with Manninen finding another gear. Gross, Rajovic, and Bol are the rest of the front row from L to R. Stash is well protected alongside Van der Kooij while Samolenkov is falling back. Kemboi might have the positioning to slide by if they can put in a final burst.
Just over 100m to go and the tables have turned. Abdul Halil flies up the right, while those on the inside behind Cullaigh and Manninen are blocked up a tad. Van der Kooij still finds a way through while Kemboi is also moving fast.
At the line, it looks like Abdul Halil will take the first leader’s jersey ahead of Van der Kooij! 3rd goes to Kemboi! A great final sprint leads to a close rest of the Top 10. Peak finishes strong for 4th ahead of Gross and Nommela in 6th. Stash, Silva, Manninen and Garcia Cortina close out the top 10.
Abdul Halil leads the GC, sprint standings and the individual stage results, while teammate Mosca leads the KOM.
Down the standings, there is a 1:30 gap. There’s lots of riders who will be upset to fall behind the split, including Eastman, Lammertink, Shikai, Hirt, and many others.
