Road Race
The undeniable favourite to take the overall victory is Ivan SIRIC of Bosnia, who is joined by teammate Aleksa CRNCEVIC. Their only direct competition is just 22, Husein SELIMOVIC might not be competitive this time round but he has a bright future ahead of him. Nobody else is overly competent on the cobblestones and Puerto Rico won't see much competition between Abner GONZALEZ and Jacob MORALES ORTEGA. Similarly, both Panamanians - Joseph Ivan SAMUDIO and Bredio RUIZ - are from Manada Coyote. The Dominican race should see Jesus Roniel MARTE dominate Steven Manuel POLANCO, and the bookies expect Matus STOCEK to outdo Michael KOLAR with the aid of Juraj BELLAN when it comes to Slovakia.
The first attack comes on the second cobbled section. MARTE rides away with STOCEK on his wheel. POLANCO, SELIMOVIC and RUIZ all make their way to the front of the pack in order to chase down the leading duo. None of the amateurs can keep up, so things begin to disintegrate. SIRIC, SAMUDIO, CRNCEVIC and GONZALEZ bridge across in that order. BELLAN, MORALES ORTEGA and KOLAR look done.
SIRIC isn't content to wait for CRNCEVIC to bring things back together for him, he wants to stamp his authority on this race! His rapid acceleration is too much for GONZALEZ; the fact he seems to have already effectively won his championship probably contributed to the lacklustre attempt to keep pace. Everybody else is left behind too as SIRIC bridges up to the escapees despite MARTE's attempts to fend him off.
SAMUDIO leads the chase, with only an intrateam competition for the national championship he has far fewer tactical concerns than his competitors. Unfortunately, SIRIC is far too strong. The fact that POLANCO was being dragged along in the chasing group meant that MARTE had been willing to work with the Bosnian, but as soon as they returned to the cobblestones SIRIC disappeared into the distance. He didn't even have to accelerate, the others just couldn't stick with him.
Disaster strikes for MARTE! It looked like things had stabilised, with only the final cobbled section to go. Just as they transitioned onto it, MARTE suffered a puncture which forced him to stand waiting for the team car as POLANCO went sailing by. There won't be much time for him to make his way back but maybe he will be able to cooperate with SAMUDIO, who has begun dropping back.
In the end the most interesting finish was between RUIZ and STOCEK. The Panamanian managed to bridge up to his Slovakian counterpart during the final cobbled section and had just a touch more in reserve when it came to the sprint. SIRIC had already won ahead of them, looking like he had barely broken a sweat. Not long after them POLANCO crossed the line to take a surprise win in the Dominican competition; he was able to stay protected for much of the day and benefited from MARTE's misfortune.
