An exceedingly quiet opening means that all the favourites have managed to stick together right to the end of this one. From a large group, including numerous amateurs, Jose Gerardo ULLOA is the first to force his way to the front. In his wake are Ignacio Jesus PRADO and Flavio DE LUNA. Up against the barriers on the left side of the screen is Luis Enrique LEMUS DAVILA.
Through the first part of the climb ULLOA and PRADO are neck-and-neck, with the former slowly gaining on the latter. Unfortunately for the flandrien, he cracks with 500m left to climb. The remaining two aforementioned riders, now joined by Edgar CADENA, are only a bikelength away from the front.
None of them are capable of matching PRADO though. He finds a second wind and seizes the victory with both hands. Everybody else finished in a line abreast some several seconds behind.
Mexican National Championships '23 Individual Time Trial
Riding for the first (?) MGUCI team from Mexico, Oscar Samuel GALVAN RAMIREZ was ready to give his heart and soul to bringing the national colours to the national team. Second on the road, he entered the hotseat with a time of 1h07'19".
He faced fierce competition in the form of Flavio DE LUNA. One the young gun, the future of Mexican cycling, the other the old veteran. Is it time for the passing of the torch? Although it seems close through the first two timechecks, DE LUNA ends up crushing GALVAN RAMIREZ in the final sector to finish with a time of 1h06'46".
He might not be there for long though, as PRADO wants to secure the double! He is up by just 1" at the first chrono, then loses 3" on his way to the second. Given that DE LUNA absolutely flew through this final sector, the Lidl rider's hopes might already be over. No! They are not over! 1h06'40"! DE LUNA may well have lain down a challenge but PRADO was more than ready to meet it.
