The Race

It’s the final race of the PCT season (at least for most of the PCT teams) and it’s all about getting those points needed for promotion or against relegation. So it’s not just about the race itself, though we won’t give any live ranking updates on the way. But it’s not just about the overall rankings, it’s also about the race itself and the puncheurs are the organizer’s favourites for the win.

It took about 20 km for a break to get away, but in the end 12 riders got away and they now (35 km into the race) have a gap of nearly 6 minutes. The 12 are:

It’s not much happening after the break got away, but the maximum gap was about 6 minutes and is slowly decreasing now. The break (and the peloton some km further behind) are already in the bumpy middle part of the race.

We’re skipping the rest of the middle part as the break is already in the final climb for the first time – it will be tackled another 4 times with the finish uphill after the last climb. It’s 60 km to go and the gap is down to 2’44. The first riders and groups are dropped by the peloton, but the best puncheurs among them are rather domestiques or not even outsiders.

The splits continue, this time a group of 40 drops the rest. At the foot of the fourth to last climb the dropped group closes the gap, but those affected should clearly get a better position as the next split will definitely come! Meanwhile pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Dinham is dropped from the break.

While the peloton tackles the climb for the third to last time it is reduced to 54 riders as the next split wasn’t undone until the foot of the climb. Most of those riders named earlier (apart from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Gebrezgabihier) learned their lesson and are on the right side this time.

Another lap is done and now the break is nearly caught after some fruitless attacks from the peloton in the flat part. The peloton consists of 51 riders with the first chasing group still 1’33 down.

Some more domestiques were dropped in the descent and the flat, so the peloton is down to 27 riders. The gap to the first real chasers is 1’12 and should be decisive.
