Stage 4 Report

The last stage of the Euskal Bizikleta goes into Eibar. 143k with 3 Cat 2 and a Cat 1. The last Cat 2 peaks just 7.5k before the end. There are also 2 sprint points along the way.

The climbers dominate the favorites list today with the average climb being a little longer, that might be bad news for the sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/favs.jpg

The first 60k of the stage are pretty flat and 7 riders quickly emerge to form a break. They are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Riesebeek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Wohrer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Kamzong, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Revard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Obando, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Tulett, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Seboka. None of them have any KOM points although theoretically there are enough points on this stage to take the jersey from a zero-point start. Riesebeek closest on GC at 2’18. There is an argument that Seboka is the best climber in the race, we will see how good an argument it is.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/01.jpg

90k to go. The break has a 4’25 lead which is the largest it has been. Doesn’t look like the peloton think the sprinters are taking this one as the chasing teams are the climber’s teams – Jura (Swiss Page), Assa Abloy (Konychev), Ekoi (Thompson) and Sauber (Schoonbroodt). The break will reach the first climb in about 4k it is the Alto de Pagatza, 4.7k at 6.3%.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/02.jpg

Revard launches first and gets a small gap but Wohrer closes him down and take first place. Kamzong 3rd, then Tulett and Riesebeek. Peloton have suddenly upped the pace and are just 1’52 down with

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/03.jpg

The peloton eases back off again and with 60k to go the lead is back to 3’12. Soon the break will have the first sprint point and then the second climb which is also Cat 2 (5.2k at 7.6%)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/04.jpg

Riesebeek is the only breakaway rider interested in the points at the sprint. He gets them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/05.jpg

2k from the top Seboka turns the screw on the climb and drops Riesebeek, Tulett and Obando. Peleton at 3’49.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/06.jpg

Wohrer pulls away to take the points at the top. If he can win the Cat 1, he would take the KOM jersey. Seboka, Kamzong and Revard take 8, 6 and 4 points. The other 3 at 1 minute, the peloton at 4’25. 51k to ride. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Ludvigsson on the front of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/07.jpg

40k to go for the peloton, the breakaway riders are all back together 3’37 ahead. Ludviggson joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Marzuki and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Thompson on the front. About 45 riders dropped, generally not of note, but 18th placed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Korosec among them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/08.jpg

8k to the second sprint for the breakaway and then it is the Cat 1 (5.8k at 6%)

Mind the sheep.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/09.jpg

Riesebeek grabs a few more points at the sprint and then Revard drives the pace on the climb. Obando quickly dropped but the peleton coming fast now with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Mosca and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Garibian doing the work. Gap down to 2’15.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/10.jpg

Revard accelerates inside the last K and Seboka is gapped. Tulett and Riesebeek dropped earlier. Peleton back to 2’53.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/11.jpg

Revard pulls away to take maximum points at the top. 10 seconds back to Kamzong. 2’27 to the peloton where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Karatsivis is on the front. The CT teams having been very strong this race. Peloton down to 99 but the sprinters high up in the GC still there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/12.jpg

Wohrer, Revard and Kamzong all just off the KOM lead. If they can stay away for another 12k to the final Cat 2 one of them could take the jersey. If not, it will end in a 3-way tie. Full standings:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/std1.jpg

Revard and Kamzong together as they hit the final climb, the Cat 2 Aldo De Aiastia, 4.8k at 4.2%. Wohrer at 40 seconds, the peloton at 2’27. 13k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/13.jpg

Revard drops Kamzong early in the climb and with 10k in the stage and 1.7k in the climb he has 2’03 over the peloton where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Hoem is on the front. Peloton down to 69 and 2nd on GC pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Aniolkowski has been dropped but the rest of the top 20 are still there (except Korosec).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Hayakawa is struggling now and the front of the race is leaving him behind, he will need to dig deep to stay in the front group. 3rd on GC pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Lagane still in the first 10 riders so he looks like he will make it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/15.jpg

Revard wins the final climb, he will take the KOM jersey unless Wohrer can take 2nd which doesn’t look likely, as Lagane, not satisfied with a passive defense, has attacked the peloton and is almost up to Wohrer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/16.jpg

Lagane (in White) is the third man over the top just behind Kamzong. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Meurisse, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Schlegel, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Grossschartner just behind having responded to the White Jersey’s attack. They are 6 seconds behind Lagane and 11 seconds ahead of 83-rider peloton. Hayakawa still in the peloton but right at the back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/17.jpg

5k banner for Revard but Meurisse is just 28 seconds down with the peloton at 49. Meurisse attacked again over the top of the climb and got a gap while the other attackers were caught.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/18.jpg

Revard not great downhill and there is still a few k of flat at the bottom but most significantly there is a 1k climb to the finish. Peloton down to 40 with Hayakawa officially dropped, but he is the only additional victim from the GC top 20.

2.5k to go for Revard as he hits the flat with 24 seconds on Meurisse and 51 seconds on the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/19.jpg

Revard under the 1k banner with an 18 second advantage but he looks cooked and the road raises to the finish. Meurisse has 31 seconds on the peloton, he lost time yesterday and is 1’04 down on GC so this is more about the stage for him. EKOI and Sauber leading the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/20.jpg

Agony for Revard as Meurisse sweeps by him with 500k to go. He still has 48 seconds on the peloton so 2nd place still in play.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/21.jpg

Meurisse is going to win the stage, Revard has cracked and looks like he will be caught. Those 12 seconds could be key in the GC. The front of the peloton are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Demare, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Hoelgaard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Paret-Peintre, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Dyrnes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Theuns, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Lagane and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Hirschi. If Lagane takes 2nd or 3rd he wins the GC. IF he doesn’t it gets more complicated. Theuns and Demare can’t win, they lost time yesterday.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Meurisse wins the stage, a classy win by a classy rider. He will be frustrated by yesterday’s time loss. Revard is riding sideways now. Demare the favorite to catch him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/23.jpg

Revard hangs on for 2nd, a huge ride by him today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Demare grabs 3rd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Lagane will win the GC and potentially push Podium Ambition back to the PCT. What a result for the home-grown Mauritian.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Dyrnes is 4th and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Hoelgaard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Paret-Peintre. The CT teams more than holding their own this race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Hagen 7th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Theuns 8th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Lagane 9th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Gesbert 10th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Schlegel 11th. Three in the top 11 for Tryg.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S4/26.jpg

Lagane not as quick at the finish today but that burst of speed to take 3rd yesterday proves a GC winning move. Meurisse gains 19 seconds but the next 29 get same time. That includes all the riders from the front group yesterday. Which means there is an 11-way tie for 2nd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Dzamastagic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Houle, are the best on countback as they also took part in the sprints, they are 2nd and 3rd on GC.

Demare had a mixed experience here but he was the most consistent finisher and takes the points jersey. Hayakawa is 2nd.

Revard is the King of the Mountains after a big last day, Kamzong ends up on 32 points making it a 4-way tie for 2nd.

Lagane is also the best young rider ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Hirschi.

Meurisse’s final day exploits help Lampre take the team’s jersey.
