Euskal Bizikleta
Stage 3 is the first of the hilly stage. 156k including 5 categorized climbs. The last of them, the Alto de Aiastia peaks 10k from the end. 2 sprint points along the way.
Its mostly the stronger finishers who make the favorites list.
Five riders are allowed to escape with a 6th 39 seconds down and looking to join them. The peloton at 2’46 with 139k to go and 4k to the start of the first climb, a Cat 2 (4.8k at 5.4%). The five up front are Hugentobler, Betancourt, Selimovic, Huby, and Bilyi. The bridger is Goos. Hugentobler, Selimovic and Bilyi have minor points in the KOM competition. All lost time on day 1 and are at least 1’38 down on GC.
It is a tight finish at the top of the Cat 2. Hugentobler wins it, he had the most points from prior stages and the 10 more here moves him to 18, good enough for third in the competition, 14 points behind the co-leaders, Cole and Yzeiraj. Not much happens for the next 70k before riders reach the first sprint point which marks the beginning of the tough parts of the stage with about 60k to go.
70k to go for the peloton, they have been keeping the break’s advantage around 3 minutes. The CT teams contributing prominently with Tafjord (Asgreen), Podium Ambition (Cole), Ekoi (Thompson), Gjensidige (Bourgoyne) and JEWA-TIROL (Selig) all contributing. Assa Abloy (Konychev) and Tryg (Blume Levy) the PCT teams on the front.
There are 4 climbs, two Cat 3s, a Cat 1 and a Cat 2 between the 55k mark and the finish. The break are on the first of them now, the Alto de Gontzagaigana, Cat 3, 3.6k at 5%. Peloton at 2’28, nobody dropped yet. Huby, Betancourt and Goos took the points at the sprint a short while ago.
Goos takes the points at the top ahead of Selimovic and Hugentobler. Bilyi is gapped, he seems to be the weakest in the break.
The break has 2.5k to the top of the next climb (Cat 3, 4.3k at 5.8%). Bilyi caught back on but is being dropped again. Peloton at 2’45 with the same teams working, a handful of riders dropped.
At the top Goos goes early and just holds off Betancourt. Selimovic third. Bilyi looks done for the day, Huby also gapped but should get back on. The second sprint is in 4k and then the Cat 1 climb.
It’s a close run thing at the second sprint. Goos gets the points ahead of Hugentobler. Huby not able to rejoin so far. Peloton at 3’08 and just cresting the last climb we’ll see if that causes splits. 37k to go.
The peloton steps on the gas and with 30k to go they have the lead down to 1’39. Bilyi caught, Huby almost caught. They are on the lower slopes of the Cat 1 Alto de Izua (5.8k at 6.6%). White, Kump, and Konychev on the front. Interesting that teams like Duck Duck Go, Popo4ever and McCormick still have their sprinters up front while their climbers hang further back, perhaps they think the peloton will stay together over this climb and the next.
600 meters to the top, Goos drops first Selimovic and then Hugentobler and Betancourt. His lead over the peloton is 1’10.
Hugentobler takes 2nd ahead of Betancourt. Goos already has a 40-second lead over this duo, who are just 47 seconds up on a 162-rider peloton. The 12 points for 2nd are enough to move Hugentobler into a three-way tie for the virtual KOM lead. But with Goos on 28 he could snatch it if he stays away to the final climb.
20k for the break. The 3 chasers used the descent to catch back up to Goos. Peloton at 1’11 with 150 riders still present including all the sprinters. 4.6k to the start of the final climb which is the Alto de Aiastia, it is 5.3k at 5.7%.
Goos attacks the other 3 on the flat and starts the final climb with 8 seconds on them and 38 seconds on the peloton which is being led by Pons
3.4k to climb. Only Goos left out front as Hirschi launches the first attack Demare (in green) and Eiking look to follow.
The attack puts an end to Goos’ day in the break but doensn’t immediately get a gap so Eiking counters. The surviving sprinters begin to suffer with Afewerki losing ground for the first time.
With 1.4k to go Eiking is caught but the action causes a split after the first 25. Afewerki and Van Asbroeck among the first to miss the split but Aniolkowski, Hayakawa and Tivani still in the front group.
Just past the 1k banner Gesbert goes on the offensive.
Gesbert is caught by Demare as he reaches the top of the climb. With the KOM points going to the GC riders there will be a 3-way tie for that jersey going into the last stage. Right now 102 riders showing in the front group but it looks like to split over the top.
Eriksson has a dig on the downhill without getting far. Now showing 123 riders in the front group. 7k to go, about half downhill. This is shaping up well for Demare.
No it isn’t, Eriksson’s forcing drags 18 riders clear as they hit the flat with 2.5k to go. Demare the first rider to miss the split. Tryg does have Hoelgaard in the front group. The other 3 surviving sprinters mentioned earlier all the in the front 18. Along with other fast finishers like Houle, Lagane and Dzamastagic.
1.6k to go Eriksson sacrificing himself, he has Dyrnes in the group with him but the latter is not well positioned. A small gap appearing behind the front 5 as Chaves loses the wheel ahead. Front 5 are Eriksson, Errazkin, Gesbert, Eiking and Hoelgaard. Narvaez trying to close the gap for the Demare group but it is 29 seconds, seems like too little too late from him.
[sorry missed this shot]
1k banner. Eriksson fading as Eiking hits the front with Hoelgaard closest on the other side of the road. Aniolkowski coming strong behind the front five but he may not have the energy left to hold his sprint. Tivani struggling at the back.
600 meters. Aniolkowski has found a lane through the middle. To his left is Hoelgaard and Gesbert, to his right Errazkin and Eiking. Hayakawa is next on the road.
300 meters. It looks like Aniolkowski will deny Eiking his chance to tie the record for Euskal Bizikleta stage wins. Hayakawa and Houle coming fast through the middle but look to be too late. Tivani has been dropped and is back with the Demare group who are still 28 seconds down.
Aniolkowski storms to a great stage victory. Looks like Popo4ever bet on the right horse. Eiking will get 2nd, that time loss on Stage 1 looking even worse right now. Hayakawa looking like the favorite for 3rd, he could take the GC lead if he gets the bonus seconds.
But a tremendous last 500 meters means it is Lagane who snatches 3rd (look where was 2 pictured ago). Hayakawa is 4th.
Errazkin is 5th ahead of Gesbert, Houle and Hoelgaard. 9th and 10th are Dyrnes and Dzamastagic. Now we wait for the time gaps.
The gap ends up at 44 seconds as Meurisse leads home the 2nd group.
Hayakawa gets the leader’s jersey on countback over Aniolkowski. Those two have 12 seconds on Lagane and 20 seconds on an 11-rider group with many of the strong puncheurs. Afewerki in 15th on 40 seconds, Demare 16th on 52 seconds.
Hayakawa also has the points jersey ahead of Afewerki. Lagane leads the U25 and Sauber the team’s jersey
Another hilly stage tomorrow, it isn’t that much harder than today’s stage so the sprinters will hope to hang on. Frozen concoctions probably not the answer for them.
