Stage 2 Report

Stage 2 takes the riders 166k into Gasteiz and while it is flat rated it includes 4 Cat 3’s, 1 Cat 2 and 1 Cat 4 climb and the last climb peaks just 10k from the end. So those riders who missed the split yesterday will need to be on their toes today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Demare is again the favorite. Even more suited to him today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S2/favs.jpg

The first KOM points are just 3k in to the stage so an early attack comes from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Laurance, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Kumara, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Loland.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S2/01.jpg

Kumara gets 6 points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Murn bridged up to the attackers but was dropped again in the scramble for the KOM points. More riders are trying to join the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S2/02.jpg

The 4 attackers come back together up front. Behind some chaos as the early climb splits a group, including the Yellow Jersey, off the front of the peloton. Probably nothing permanent though.

150k to go, the original 4 attackers have a 33 second gap on a 22-rider group that includes the Yellow Jersey and a number of other sprinters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Hugentobler and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Naud leading that group. 1’31 back to the peloton that is currently being led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Garby.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S2/03.jpg

Well this is interesting. 127k to go, the Yellow Jersey group has caught the 4 original attackers to make a 26-rider group. A number of sprinters their but they aren’t working. That group about to start the Cat 2 climb to the Alto de la Barrerilla. Peloton at 2’19. Garby doing all the chasing at the moment for the peleton, flat riding not really his strength so not surprising he isn’t making much headway. With all the top sprinters teams in the “breakaway” it isn’t clear who will chase, but maybe the climb will shake things up. The 26 escapees are:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Van Asbroeck

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S2/04.jpg

Cole goes first but Kelly is best and takes maximum points on the climb. Hugentobler 2nd, Cole settles for third, then John. The breakaway splitting up on the climb, it looks like the sprinters might slide back into the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S2/05.jpg

Selimovic takes the final points and the five scoring points plus Laurance, Naud and Simmons come together over the top.

But work from Prevar and Borg bring the rest of the break back and with 117k to go they have 1’56 over the peloton which is still being led by Garby.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S2/06.jpg

100k to go and the lead is down to 58 seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Hopkins has relieved Garby. Ahead the break losing momentum as other teams seem unwilling to help Naud who has been doing most of the pacing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S2/07.jpg

The race is altogether with 94k to go. Naud securing himself the most aggressive rider prize for keeping the split going for as long as it did.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S2/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Rosskopf and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Yzeiraj escape to form a more normal size break and quickly build up a 2’30 lead. Yzeiraj 2nd in the KOM competition so he could threaten Cole’s lead. 85k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S2/09.jpg

There are 4 Cat 3 climbs in the last 70k, Rosskopf beats Yzeiraj at the first of them. Peloton at 3’43.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S2/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Tiberi takes the last 2 points while riding tempo.

Yzeiraj goes early and takes maximum points on the next Cat 3. He now has 28 points and is just 4 points behind Cole. Peloton at 3’13 with 55k to go. Colombini, Tryg and Popo4ever all contributing to the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S2/11.jpg

At the first sprint point Yzeiraj beats Rosskopf for first and Afewerki wins the sprint from the pack for 3rd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Wippert closest to him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Demiri who was dropped during the early chaos is currently 8’50 down on the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S2/12.jpg

At the third of the four Cat 3’s Rosskopf overhauls Yzeiraj at the line. The Stela-Vita rider only takes enough points to tie Cole. The peloton just 1’08 behind so they may not make it to the final KOM which is 16k ahead. Tiberi again takes the final point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S2/13.jpg

Yzeiraj and Rosskopf just hold on to take 1st and 2nd at the 2nd Sprint. Afewerki gets third again. The peloton all together with 18k to go except for Demiri.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S2/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Gebrezgabihier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Cabanas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Bdadou lead the peloton over the final Cat 3. With no further points available pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Yzeiraj and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Cole will head into tomorrow tied for the KOM lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S2/15.jpg

3.2k to go, after letting Colombini do most of the work pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Summerhill has brought pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Demare to the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Bdadou behind them with Afewerki on his wheel. To the right of them are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Hayakawa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Van Asbroeck. About 20 riders dropped, mostly ones who lost time yesterday but Yzeiraj is also one of them, he was 4th on the GC coming in but will lose that.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S2/16.jpg

Summerhill pulls off with still 2.1k to go putting Demare in the wind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S2/17.jpg

There is a pause before Summerhill gets going, just before the 1k banner. Demare behind him then Hayakawa and Van Asbroeck.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S2/18.jpg

Hayakawa opens the sprint with 700 meters to go. Then it is Demare, Van Asbroeck and the Swiss pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Page.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S2/19.jpg

Still Hayakawa with 200 meters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Aniolkowski coming on the right. They are going to have to ride through some spectators to finish this one.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S2/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Hayakawa is the winner ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Demare and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Page.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S2/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Van Asbroeck rides over some spectators for 4th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Aniolkowski gets up for 5th. 6th and 7th are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Afewerki and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Walscheid. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Dzamastagic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Lagane and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Korosec.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Euskal/S2/22.jpg

Afewerki holds on to the leader’s jersey thanks to his sprint point time bonuses. Hayakawa is second and Demare 3rd. The latter has 12 seconds on his GC rivals.

Afewerki also leads points. Yzeiraj will wear the KOM jersey tomorrow. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Konychev still the best young rider and Sauber now leads teams.

Demiri loses 18 minutes but easily makes the time cut.
