Stage 4 Report

Stage 4 should be the decisive stage in the tour, a 21k flat time trial between Graytown and Nagambie. With no time gaps in the sprint stages so far nothing separates the contenders from each other. Most of the main riders will start between 50 and 20 slots from the end.

The stage favorites include all the top time trialists in the race, top contender pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Dumoulin will be the second to last of the favorites to start.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S4/favs.jpg

We’re almost 40 riders in before we get to the first rider who would expect to challenge for a GC top 20, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Demiri. He only manages 5th, 8 seconds down on the current leader, the young American pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Welch, who put in a great ride. Demiri was 6 seconds up on Welch at the time check but went out too hard and blew up in the 2nd half. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Jensen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Reddish are 2nd and 3rd at the moment, 1 and 3 seconds down, respectively.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S4/01.jpg

Podium Ambition climber, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png O'Connor shows how it is done, 12 seconds down at the time check he is 17 seconds up a the finish and takes over the lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S4/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Predatsch is the first of true top contenders on the course. He is the new leader, by 53 seconds. Time will tell how good that really is.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S4/03.jpg

With 70 riders finished the stage has reached its midpoint, the standings:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S4/std1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Osborne is a solid TT rider but he finishes 14th (+1’46) with most top riders still to come, he won’t be happy with that.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S4/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Scotson puts up the next solid time: 5th, +1’14, he might have hoped for a little better.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S4/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Magnussen is also probably disappointed with his finish +1’23, 10th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png John does a little better, 7th, +1’17.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Malori is 2nd at the time check when he goes through, 21 seconds back. A great 2nd half from him and he takes over the hot seat by 1 second on Predatsch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S4/07.jpg

We’re in the stretch with a lot of the favorites now so not far behind Malori is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Gradek, he was 3 seconds faster than the Italian at the time check. He fades a little in the 2nd half and sits 3rd at the finish 3 seconds down. Still a good ride for the Adidas man.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S4/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Rosskopf is next on the course, he was 5 seconds faster than Malori at the time check. But he doesn’t quite hold on, he is 2 seconds slower at the finish behind both Malori and Predatsch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S4/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Mayer takes over 5th, but 51 seconds down on the leader.

SEE Turtles first big contender is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Kelly, he was 2nd at the first time check. He drops to 5th at the finish, +0’18.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S4/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Kireva is next on the course, he finishes in 6th, 28 seconds down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S4/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Downey is next, 7th for him 47 seconds down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S4/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Campbell is the first of the main Podium Ambition contenders to reach the finish. A disappointing 8th for him, +0’51. Podium Ambition sitting in 8th, 9th and 10th at the moment with Campbell, Mayer and O’Connor.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S4/13.jpg

Spark’s big hope, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Bevin, is next. He knocks O’Connor out of 10th, +0’53.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S4/14.jpg

Glanbia’s last hope is Canadian Champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Cheyne. 7th on +0’33 for him. Not a great day for Glanbia, they sit 7th and 8th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S4/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Hamza does a little better, +0’23, 6th, one spot behind his teammate Kelly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S4/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Dumoulin on the course now, his split time was a disappointing 9th at +0’36. We have seen some big turnarounds, maybe he can do it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S4/17.jpg

He can’t, he is also 9th at the finish. No repeat Herald Sun Tour victory for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Hennis is the last contender on the course, his split time was also disappointing, +0’47.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S4/18.jpg

He finishes in 11th 48 seconds down. Despite having 6 of the top 8 riders on paper, Team Würth MODYF, Podium Ambition and Glanbia put only 1 rider in the top 5 (Predatsch).

With only the sprinters and attackers who took time bonuses left on the course pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Malori can begin to celebrate a surprise stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Moser is probably the best TT rider among the sprinters. He loses 1’34 (30th). Which with his bonus seconds is good enough to put him in 25th on GC. With a stage win tomorrow he could move into the top 20.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S4/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Liepins wraps up the stage and his time in Yellow by losing 2’54.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S4/20.jpg

Malori is the new race leader and barring disaster tomorrow should win the GC. Liepins still has the points lead. The points-rich teams in the CT are getting richer in this race. Not a great day for Podium Ambition but Mayer takes over the U25 lead and should win that. Surprise package Welch has Babymetal in 2nd. Unsurprisingly, in a TT race, the SEE Turtles lead the team’s competition.
