Stage 3 Report

Stage 3 of the Herald Sun Tour is another flat one. This time 172k between Bendigo and Nagambie. Just one very mild Cat 3 on the course today, plus 3 sprint points.

Stage 1 winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Liepins and Stage 2 winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Minali are both on the favorites list.

20k gone, a lot of riders wanting to be in the break today so it has taken a while for anything to settle. But the trio of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Jans, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Samudio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Owen seem to have got clearance to take off. They have 1’05. None of them have KOM points so probably no impact there. Samudio is young rider eligible so could move up in that competition if he does well at the intermediates.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S3/01.jpg

Jans goes early and snatches the Cat 3 points. Peloton at 6’34, same 3 sprinter teams working – Crabbe, Team Würth MODYF and Hilcona. Two of the three have stage wins, is today Hilcona’s turn?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S3/02.jpg

Jans wins the first sprint in Heathcote. Just third place and 2 seconds for Samudio. Lead was up to 7 minutes and now it is back to 5’54.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S3/03.jpg

At the second sprint in Graytown Jans wins again. Samudio second this time. 73k to go the lead is 4’09.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S3/04.jpg

Jans proves he is the fastest man in the break by wining the third sprint as well. Owen second this time. Just 8 total bonus seconds for Samudio, that will put him in a 3-way tie for 2nd in the young rider competition, assuming the break doesn’t win the stage and he doesn’t get dropped by the peloton. Right now the break has 2’11 with 39k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S3/05.jpg

20k to go for the peloton, the break is 1’08 ahead. Right now, the 21 riders pictured have a small gap on the rest of the peloton. Driving the split are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Magnussen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Richardson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Weiss, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Kireva, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png English, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Habtom, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Rathe.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S3/06.jpg

The catch is made with 6k to go. The peloton back in one piece. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Richardson on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S3/07.jpg

2.4k to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Rathe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Altanzul ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Liepins (in yellow) at the front. Next row includes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Moser, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Krieger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Scully, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Minali (in Green) and Kireva dropping back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S3/08.jpg

1.4k Altanzul begins his leadout. Behind him are Liepins, Scully, Krieger, Minali and Moser.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S3/09.jpg

800 meters, Altanzul still on the front. At the back of the train Moser is setting out on his own, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Scott doing the same to his left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S3/10.jpg

400 meters. Liepins and Scully pass Altanzul. Krieger in 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S3/11.jpg

200 meters, Liepins has the lead over Scully but Krieger and Minali are closing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S3/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Liepins gets his second stage win. Crabbe have had an outstanding season and they just capped it with a textbook leadout. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Scully gets second ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Krieger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Minali.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S3/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Moser is 5th. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Andersson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Tivani. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Selig and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Lo Cicero wrap up the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S3/14.jpg

Liepins retakes sole possession of the GC and points jersey. He is truly awful in the time trial so tomorrow will be his last day in the leader’s jersey. Jans up to 4th in the GC but he is also a pretty terrible TT rider. In fact, all the riders who have gained bonus seconds are bad on the TT bike so don’t look for any of them to feature after tomorrow.

McGill holds on to both the KOM and Young Rider jersey. He is another terrible TT rider so he will like lose the latter but he will have a chance to retain his KOM jersey on Stage 5.
