Stage 2 Report

Stage 2 is 158k from Mt Macedon to Bendigo. Two cat 2 climbs so it will be important in the KOM competition. The peloton struggled a little to catch the break yesterday, with more climbing on the menu that could be true again. There are also 2 sprint points.

With all the climbing in the first half of the stage it ought to be a bunch sprint and that is what the organizers expect.

10k gone, with all the KOM points on offer there is a lot more arguing over the break today. On the lower slopes of Mount Macedon 3 riders have a 55-second gap, they are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png McGill, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Wade, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Fjellheim. Another group of 5, can be seen further back on the right, they have just been brought back. That group includes KOM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Le Gac, as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Iradukunda, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Owen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Yzeiraj, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Deelstra.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S2/01.jpg

The climb discourages further attacks and by the top McGill and Fjellheim have 3’29. McGill takes maximum points. Wade dropped on the climb and is 34 seconds down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S2/02.jpg

As the peloton reaches the top the remaining points go to domestiques, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Van Den Bossche and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Vangheluwe. Two leaders at 4’41 with Wade still 41 seconds down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S2/03.jpg

Wade is able to rejoin in time to take 2nd behind McGill at the first sprint point. Their lead is 6’29 with 118k to go. All three of these riders eligible for the young rider competition.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S2/04.jpg

84k to go, the break on to the lower slopes of Mount Alexander, which is the 2nd Cat 2 climb. Peloton at 4’33.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S2/05.jpg

McGill proves he is the strongest in the group and takes 10 more points. He will wear the KOM jersey tomorrow. Wade second.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S2/06.jpg

Behind there is no fight for the remaining points and Van Den Bossche leads the peloton over. He is 4th in the Kom just from his work on the front of the pack. Peloton at 4’37, with 80k to go, as they complete the climbing for the day.

40k to go, Crabbe, Hilcona and Team Würth again doing the chasing. The gap is 1’51.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S2/07.jpg

McGill makes it 4 for 4 in the KOMs and sprints, at the final sprint. If he can stay with the peloton, he will have a good shot at leading the young rider competition.

10k banner. 30 seconds to an attacking McGill, 20 seconds to the other two.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S2/09.jpg

McGill is the last one caught with 7k to go.

2.4k to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Rathe on the front, he rode with Holloway when he had 15 wins for McCormick in 2019, so he knows how to set up a sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Altanzul 2nd wheel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Liepins just behind him. Mixed in there are three Hilcona riders, left to right: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Huppertz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Van Uden, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Krieger. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Havik would be useful right now but he is sitting 100 riders back, not interested in helping his rival Krieger. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Scully are the next two behind Liepins.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S2/10.jpg

Under the 1k banner, Altanzul on the front ahead of Liepins and Krieger. Next three are Bouhanni, Scully and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Minali.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S2/11.jpg

500 meters, still Altanzul leading but Liepins and Krieger have both launched their sprints. Then it is Scully, Minali and Bouhanni. Next row is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Major, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Tivani and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Scott.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S2/12.jpg

200 meters, 5 wide but the three coming from the 2nd row are moving a little faster.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S2/13.jpg

Just shy of the line Krieger still has it by a few tire widths.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S2/14.jpg

At the line it looks like he has it ahead of Minali but this will need to go to the judges, nobody celebrate.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S2/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Major is 6th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Moser and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Scott. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Colbrelli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Tivani.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S2/16.jpg

Bad news for Hilcona, the judges must have had a better angle than us because pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Krieger is judged to have finished 5th. The winner is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Minali followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Liepins, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Scully and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni.

Liepins retains the GC and points lead ahead of Minali in both cases. McGill is the best young rider ahead of Yamada
