Stage 1 Report

As the Tour Down Under marks the opening of the season, the Herald Sun Tour marks the closing. 5 days under the hot Australian sun. Today is one of four for the sprinters, a 124k stage from Geelong to Ballarat, where we will have a slight uphill finish. A single Cat 3 climb will dictate the KOM leader and there are also two sprint points.

The stage favorites are the sprinters led by the veteran pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Havik, one of two Hilcona options for the sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S1/favs.jpg

Not a lot of excitement for the break and the first 4 attackers go clear. They are: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Yamada, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png McCambridge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Le Gac, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Lampaert. They have 2’28 with 115k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S1/01.jpg

Le Gac takes the first sprint ahead of Yamada and Lampaert. 4’58 is the lead. 95k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S1/02.jpg

60k to go the lead is 2’56. Crabbe (Van Den Bossche, Dehairs, English), Team Würth MODYF (Vangheluwe, Magnussen) and Hilcona (Johanson, Richardson, Foldager, Huppertz, Van Uden) on the front. In 5k the break will tackled the lone climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S1/03.jpg

Le Gac is by far the best climber in the group and easily takes maximum points. He will wear the KOM jersey tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S1/04.jpg

The climb splits the peloton and with 37k to go there are 3 main groups on the road. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Campbell, who can be seen in the foreground of the picture, is the only top TTer caught behind. He is in the third group on the road (4th if you count the break).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S1/05.jpg

Le Gac completes the hat trick of wins at the second sprint. The first group of dropped riders has been able to rejoin the front of the peloton but the Campbell group is still 1’54 down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S1/06.jpg

Just under 20k to go for the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png McCambridge is caught, the other three have 48 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S1/07.jpg

The Campbell group has 22 riders and is 2’21 down, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png O’Connor is with him but looks like they are hoping other teams will close the gap. There is another group of 29 riders even further back but no big names in that group.

9k, the break has been fighting hard but they have just 18 seconds. Simba Cement and Strava have come forward to help the chase. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Redecker on the front. The Campbell group at 1’56.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S1/08.jpg

The catch is made with about 6k to go.
The pace slows after the catch and with 1.5k to go there is no organization. The riders can see the uphill to the finish. The slower pace brings almost the whole peloton back together.

1k banner. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Sbaragli launches first with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni behind and to the left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Liepins on his wheel and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Scott. Favorites pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Minali and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Krieger caught a few riders back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S1/10.jpg

700 meters. Sbaragli leading. Bouhanni and Liepins to his left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Mudgway and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Habtom to his right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S1/11.jpg

400 meters, situation is similar but everyone closer together. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Lo Cicero and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Tivani coming up in the middle. Scott and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Moser looking for room on the left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S1/12.jpg

100 meters. Sbaragli collapses, blocking pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Scully. Habtom also cooked. Liepins to the front. 4% grades all the way up here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S1/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Liepins takes the win for Crabbe. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Moser is 2nd ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Tivani. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Scott, 4th and 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S1/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Lo Cicero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Colbrelli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Selig, 6th to 8th. Favorites pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Minali and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Krieger settle for 9th and 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S1/15.jpg

Everyone except pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Johanson gets the same time. Liepins leads the GC and Points. Yamada’s bonus seconds get him the best young rider jersey ahead of Scott.
