The Race
With the top cobblers split between the Tour of the Battenkill and here the list of favourites is a bit thinned out, but it consists of the usual suspects nonetheless. Given how the season went so far it’s gonna be a duel between Pedersen and Wisniowski.
With 10 km into the race a group of 12 constitutes the break of the day. The 12 riders are Pibernik, van Sintmaartensdijk, Geniets, Ansons, Stehli, Theorpanous, Simmons, Cherkasov, Scotson, Atkins, De Bondt and Novardianto.
With about 140 km to go the gap is already slowly shrinking after reaching a maximum of about 5 minutes.
It’s not much happening for the next 80 km. Right now the break crosses the finish line for the third last time. The gap is 2’14.
But shortly afterwards a first long-range attack is on its way. No big guns yet, but Jacobs, Chokri, Bolivar, Kortsidakis and Kolev are all good second-tier cobblers nonetheless. Their gap is still only 20’’ after 15 km of pushing, but the chasing results in some short lived splits in the peloton. Some time later Sa. Kuroeda bridges to the chasers, making it a group of 6.
The group of 6 is brought back with 30 km to go. The initial break is still out front with a gap of 1’22. But the chasing results in some more splits.
With 19 km to go the break is reeled in as well. A group of 97 riders is now in front with all the favourites still there. The second to last cobbled sector is 6 km ahead with the final 2 km also cobbled.
Anderberg was the first of the big guns to attack, but the resulting group didn’t get a lasting gap. The Swede will be content nonetheless as his captain Wisniowski uses the following cobbles to attack himself. Right now only Stallaert is able to follow him.
With 11 km to go the two attackers are 14’’ in front of a prominent chasing group, consisting of Polanc, Kamyshev, Van Hooydonck, Teunissen, Spengler, Theuns, Pedersen, Daniel and Blythe. The peloton is another 26’’ behind.
The WC was able to distance his companion for a short time, but now the two are in front together again. Their chasers are back in the peloton though and the gap of 38’’ could be decisive already as there are only 6.6 km to go!
With 4 km to go Wisniowski attacks again and gets a small gap. Stallaert is 6’’ behind, with the same 9 riders as before 22’’ behind chasing him.
It’s two in front again as the leaders reach the final cobbled sector. The gap to the chasers is 28’’.
The sprint isn’t underway under the red kite. Behind Pedersen has a gap to the other chasers.
With 200 m to go it still doesn’t seem like the two are sprinting, but maybe they’re just spent. Wisniowski is still in front and Stallaert has to accelerate soon if he wants to get past the WC.
The Belgian isn’t able to accelerate and Wisniowski adds another win to his great season!
There’s no real sprint further behind, too. Pedersen finishes in 3rd on his own. Behind him Daniel edges out Theuns for 4th place.
Behind them Spengler, Kamyshev, Teunissen, Van Hooydonck and Polanc complete the top 10.
Blythe, Senechal, Neilands and Anderberg finish in 11th to 14th. Van der Haar leads the next group to the line for 15th place.
Congratulations to the winner of this year’s Rheden GP Wisniowski!
