Stage 6 Report

Stage 6 is the second hilly challenge faced by the riders. 170k around the Huy with four ascents of the Mur de Huy including one at the finish. Plenty of other little climbs as well, overall, 4 rated Cat 4, 2 rated Cat 3 and 2 rated Cat 2 as well as one sprint point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png De Bie is the favorite and the rider who could really threaten the top of the GC today. Hopefully he takes that on more aggressively than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Wisniowski did when he had his chance on Stage 4. Kwiatkowski won this stage on the way to the overall last year.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/favs.jpg

Don’t be confused by that red kite guys, you still have 165k to go. The first ascent of the Mur de Huy (1.4k at 9.6%) comes just 5k into the race. Three riders have 1’10, additional attacks have been shut down so far. The three leaders are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Ansons, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Cheung.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/01.jpg

Additional attacks are shut down on the Huy and with 11k gone the lead of the front 3 goes over 2 minutes.

With 136k to go the 3 leaders reach the first categorized climb, the Côte de Their-Marchin (Cat 4, 1.2k at 5.5%), with a lead of 2’20. Additional riders tried to escape the peloton but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Vandevelde worked hard to shut them down. None of these 3 have any KOM points, both Rabobank’s KOM top 2 tried to join the break but were among those closed down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/02.jpg

At the top Ansons uses his sprint speed to hold off Juul-Jensen. The second categorized climb, the Cat 3 Montagne Corroy (1.5k at 7.0%) is in 5.5k.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/03.jpg

Again Anson’s outfoxes Juul-Jensen. The lead is 3’29, about 30k until the next categorized climb now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/04.jpg

102k for the peloton. Amaysim (Kennaugh), ELCO (Farantakis), EA (Zingle) and ISA-Hexacta (Mraouni) doing the chasing. The gap to the leaders is 3’18, the leaders are about to start the Cat 4 Côte d’Ereffe (2.1k at 5.4%).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/05.jpg

This time Juul-Jensen’s puncheur skills make the difference and he gaps Ansons and holds off a late charge from the Latvian. The riders are now on the second lap of the main circuit of the race. They will do the sequence of the Côte d’Ereffe, the Côte de Their-Marchin, Montagne Corroy and the Mur de Huy twice more after this lap. Which climbs carry KOM points varies by lap. On this lap the only other points are on the Mur de Huy (cat 2).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/06.jpg

On the Mur de Huy Juul-Jensen gaps the other two and takes maximum points. The peloton at 2’41, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Perez has attacked the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Dujardin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Roosen join Perez on the attack and beat him to the remaining points at the top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/08.jpg

The 2 points taken by Roosens are enough to keep him in 2nd in the KOM competition on 23 points with Ansons and Juul-Jensen 1 point behind on 22. The leader, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Hellemose, has 32.

The break rolls through the lone sprint point with 76k to go and a 3’16 lead, we are on the flat section between the 4 climbs now. The three attackers did not persist. Paraguayan champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Orue has become the first rider dropped by the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/09.jpg

The lead is down to 2’21 as the breakaway face the Côte d’Ereffe for the penultimate time. On this lap it is this climb (Cat 4) and the Mur de Huy (Cat 2) that carry points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/10.jpg

Juul-Jensen just gets it. Our forgotten 3rd Musketeer, Cheung, is getting dropped on every climb but so far he has been able to fight back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Mraouni leads the peloton over 2’55 later. The leaders all well placed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/12.jpg

Getting dropped on the Côte d’Ereffe proved once too often for Cheung and he was unable to rejoin and by the top of the Montagne Corroy he is already caught by the peloton which has closed the gap to 1’53. The other two are about to tackle the Mur again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen wins 10 more points, he should get the KOM lead. Dujardin can be seen behind attacking out of the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/14.jpg

Dujardin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Sulimov, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Boros get the remaining points.

The KOM leader board looks like this:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/std1.jpg

With the last two climbs with points coming in the last 12k that is probably all that we have to say about this competition.

The catch is made with 23k to ride and about 5k to the start of the last set of climbs. 172 riders in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/15.jpg

With the first two climbs in the set complete, 10k to go in the stage and 6k to the Montagne Corroy, forcing by EA has split 66 riders off the front. Greig men pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Pedersen (15th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Oliveira (16th) are the only two from the top 20 to miss the split but the situation remains fluid.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/16.jpg

2.5k to go as the riders descend off the Montagne Corroy to the base of the Mur de Huy. Still no fixed time gaps. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Bester, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Bax and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Paez the front 3.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Vansevenant leads them on to the Mur, the gradients reach 21% on this climb. A 25-rider group have 28 seconds over the next group as they start the climb. From the top 10 pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Sanogo (8th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Jacobs (3rd), and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Anderberg (7th) are missing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/18.jpg

Under the 1k banner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Valter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Van Niekerk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png De Bie and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Vansevenant lead. The gap to the next group up to 33 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/19.jpg

700 meters. Valters has an edge. Yellow Jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Cosnefroy well placed. The 2nd group has closed the gap bringing the leading group up to 61. But that could change again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/20.jpg

The situation is similar as they reach the top. Valter looking likely for a 2nd stage win but that line is the KOM points, the finish is 300 meters beyond that.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/21.jpg

Valter passes the KOM line with a clear lead on Van Niekerk and Vansevenant. There is now a gap after the first 17 with all the riders mentioned earlier on the wrong side.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Valter can celebrate his 2nd stage win with 100 meters to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Van Niekerk edges pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Vansevenant for 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png De Bie only 4th, no bonuses for him. Then it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Ardila, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Van der Poel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Koretzky.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/25.jpg

The Yellow Jersey, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Cosnefroy, the White Jersey, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Leknessund, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Aleotti complete the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S6/26.jpg

The top 16 all get the same time, among the top 10 on GC only Jacobs, Anderberg and Sanogo lose time, dropping them to 8th, 9th and 10th overall. Time bonuses move Vansevenant ahead of De Bie. Gaviria up to 7th, he could move up another place with a stage win tomorrow. Also, while tomorrow is flat, it isn’t easy, so we could get more time gaps.

Gaviria scores 2 points on the stage which is enough to keep him ahead of Valter for the points jersey. ISA-Hexacta takes over the teams jersey. Leknessund is still the best young rider but Vansevenant is just 5 seconds down.
