Stage 2 Report

Stage 2 is the first hilly stage in the race. 180k including a cat 1, a Cat 2 and a Cat 3 plus a number of uncategorized climbs including one to the finish.

The stage doesn’t seem that hard and race leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Yatsevich isn’t terrible in the hills and has the power of the leader’s jersey on his side. But a lot of the puncheurs lost big time yesterday and will hope to make that up today, they dominate the favorites list, with last year’s stage winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Müller among them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/favs.jpg

The break forms quickly and as they start the first climb of the day (cat 3, 8.7k at 2.5%) 9 riders have a 3’34 lead. The escapees are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Bush, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Vanbilsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Bovenhuis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Boros, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Hellemose, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Roosen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Marijn Van den Berg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Atkins, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Dujardin. Only 5 teams represented in the 9 riders, none of them are great puncheurs. The best on GC is is Rosen at 2’53. There was also a very early sprint where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Koretzky, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png O'Brien, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Leknessund took the points. That moves O’Brien 2 seconds closer to Leknessund in the young rider competition.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/01.jpg

Hellemose edges Bovenhuis and Boros to take the points at the top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/02.jpg

The break doesn’t contest the 2nd sprint point. They have 3’14 with 147k to go. Zara controlling things for the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/03.jpg

Dujardin decides to grab some points at the third sprint point. Just ahead they start the second climb, which is rated Cat 2 and while it is short it includes gradients up to 11%. This climb is also the finishing climb. Zara still chasing behind and the lead is under 2 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/04.jpg

Hellemose takes 10 points to bring his total to 16, 2nd is Bovenhuis (8+4=12) then Roosen (6). Boros (4+2=6) and Dujardin (2) take the rest. Atkins dropped on the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/05.jpg

Peloton crosses 1’59 behind.

100k to go for the peloton. Atkins has been caught. EA (Gunnlaugson) and ELCO (Miltiadis) driving the pace and the gap is just 1 minute. About 7k to the start of the Cat 1 climb (17k at 2.3%), the climb has a long plateau half way up which keeps the average down but there are a number of steep sections.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/06.jpg

Having got as close as 45 seconds the gap is back to 1 minute as the break start the official climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/07.jpg

5k to climb and the break is down to 6 with Vanbilsen and Van Den Berg dropped. Peloton has eased off and the gap is back to 2’43. Amaysim worked a little but now back to Zara. Tinkoff seem uninterested in defending the jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/08.jpg

Hellemose goes clear and takes maximum points at the top (16+16=32). No more mountain points so he will wear the jersey tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/09.jpg

Dujardin (12+2=14), Bush (10) and Bovenhuis (8+12=20) are the next 3 over. The latter sits second in the KOM behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Hellemose.

With 64k to ride the peloton reach the bottom of the descent with 185 riders. 2’41 the gap. Just the four mentioned above are left at the front. Vanbilsen has been caught and Van Den Berg, Boros and Roosen are in between. No official climbs but lots of bumps between here and the finishing climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/10.jpg

After one of the bigger bumps we see the first splits in the peloton. 108 riders left in the main peloton which trails the break by 2’04. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Per one of the bigger names missing out right now. 4th on GC pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Viennet also behind the split.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Dujardin again jumps ahead to grab the points at the last sprint but the peloton is just 42 seconds down. It has been reforming and splitting continually but only a handful of riders dropped permanently but Viennet, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Campenaerts (9th on GC), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Scotson (14th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Goldstein(18th) among them. 33k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/12.jpg

21k to go and the catch is made by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Kiriakidis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Aleotti. Right now a 43-rider front group but a 100 or so riders not far off the back. The Yellow Jersey still in the front group. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Atkins, 8th on GC, has joined those more permanently dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/13.jpg

19k to go, the front group of 43 has opened up a lead of 51 seconds over a group of 27. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Gerts leading the chase in the dropped group. A number of big cobblers in among the 27, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Pedersen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Per, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Polanc. Also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Razumov, 5th on GC and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Thomas, 10th on GC are further back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/14.jpg

With 13k to go, just as Gerts drags the chase group back to the front, the puncheurs launch their first attack. The attack is led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Van Niekerk, behind him are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Valter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Koretzky, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Müller and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png McCarthy. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Vansevenant and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png O'Brien try to join them. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Ardila a little further back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/15.jpg

With 10k to go Aleotti closes down the attack. Gerts and all the riders mentioned before except Pedersen have been dropped again.

It is a 45-rider front group as they hit the bottom slopes of the final climb. The climb is 3.4k. A brave solo effort saw Gerts regain this group, now he must hang on to the end. Per, Polanc and Razumov are still in a group 48 seconds down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Koretzky launches the first attack with 2.3k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/17.jpg

Koretzky can’t get a gap and at the back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Kiriakidis has been dropped. ELCO and EA have sacrificed all their GC cards in the push for a stage stage win today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Valter and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Müller launch the next attack. The Yellow Jersey is right at the back of the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/18.jpg

1.3k, Valter has a gap. Koretzky 2nd on the road. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png McCarthy coming up on the right-hand side of the road. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png De Bie yet to move but he is near the front of the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/19.jpg

800 meters. Valter has 12 seconds on the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Van der Poel led peloton. De Bie looks poised to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Vansevenant is the other rider in the front row.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/20.jpg

500 meters for Valter, De Bie has made his move but Valter is holding him off for now. 12 riders have been gapped at the back including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Yatsevich, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Gerts, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Pedersen. Former winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Oliveira also looks in trouble.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/21.jpg

300 meters Valter still holding his gap over De Bie and the road flattens from here. Vansevenant and Van der Poel the next two. Oliveira dropped as are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Malecki and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Anderberg (6th on GC). Only GC top 10 riders from yesterday left in the front group are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Cosnefroy (2nd), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Van Baarle (3rd) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Cavagna (7th).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Valter wins the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png De Bie takes 2nd ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Vansevenant. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Van der Poel gives Lidl two in the top 4. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Leknessund is 5th, he seems like a future winner of this race. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Ardila is 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Van Niekerk is 7th. The World Champion survives well and takes 8th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Koretzky and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Paez.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/TONE/S2/25.jpg

Valter gets an 8 second gap but the next 19 get s.t., including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Gaviria in 20th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Barthe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Anderberg get 21st and 22nd and lose 42 seconds. The time losses expand from there.

Cosnefroy is the new leader ahead of Van Baarle by 4 seconds. Yatsevich drops to 11th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Wisniowski up to 5th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png De Bie up to 9th. Puma have 3 in the top ten with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Cavagna (3rd), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png O’Brien (6th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Stork (7th).

Yatsevich and Valter tied for the points lead. Leknessund ahead of O’Brien in the young rider competition. Puma has the teams lead over Gazelle.

The GC battle takes a break for some sprinting tomorrow.
