This report is brought to you by Imladrik.
Change of scenery for a 157 km between New Hampshire and the Atlantic Coast. Speaking of which, let’s hope the teams know better of the United States geography than the reporter, as I nearly went to wait the riders in the other side of the country.
As we’ll likely mainly be in the state of Maine, let’s talk about this one. We’re closing on the finale of the race, now only some hundreds of kilometers and a border away of Montreal – 274 km between Ossipee Lake and the Quebec metropolis. 5% of the local population speaks French as one’s mothertongue, so maybe I won’t be so lost. Portland is the economic capital of the state, the administrative capital being Augusta. Seems like a nice place to spend a beautiful autumn evening.
Except a cat. 3 and a cat. 4 climbs to Foss Mountain in the 25 first kilometers, the stage main difficulty will be that we are two weeks into the race, so the organism begin to tire. The result will come down to who wants to be in the break, and who wants to work at the head of the peloton with two important and hard days coming.
Still, this should be an important day in the points competition, and another chance for Haller to take the stage wins record.
The riders are on the road to the first categorized climb, Young Hill (cat. 3, 3,9 km, 5,5%). White and Le Gac have 35 seconds on Tarvis and Kawasaki, one minute on the peloton. None of the guys out is a threat either for the GC or the mountain classification.
Air New Zealand and Glanbia are leading the peloton.
Le Gac let White work all climb long and accelerates to snatch the 6 points. The Podium Ambition rider is already cooked, and will be back safe into the peloton.
The climb to Foss Mountain begins right away (cat. 4, 1,4 km, 8%). Le Gac seems as burned as White.
Everyone is brought back with 132 km to go, and the points go to the Glanbia domestiques.
Two hard weeks are taking their toll on the riders. 10 of them are dropped, with Samudio already 3’30 back.
We’re not in Switzerland, nor in Germany, but in Fryeburg, Maine, a 3500 inhabitants city on the shores of the river Saco, which hosts a regional airport! In any case, there’s a sprint here, and Wippert takes max points, ahead of Silva, Sanikwathi, Zariff and El Sabbahi. Wippert closes down to 14 points behind Gall.
97 km to go. Glanbia and Air New Zealand drive the peloton with a fast pace. Johanson punctured and won’t come back.
We’re in Italy now! In Naples, more precisely. Well, one could wonder. The city is entangled between many “ponds” and lakes, and there’s another sprint! It’s won by Silva, ahead of Tivani, Zariff, and El Sabbahi. Though Kraftwerk tried to bring Haller to the front, he was boxed in once again.
Tivani now has 98 points. Speaking of which, let’s have a look at the points standing ahead of the final sprint.
66 km left to ride.
We fast forward to the last 10 km. Kraftwerk and Adidas are now pacing the peloton.
3,5 km left. All the riders are bundled behind the Adidas train. Haller seems to have spent lots of energy to stay in their wheel.
700 m from the line, Reinhardt is delivered. Haller still is in his wheel. The riders behind are:
Perera Silva Dzervus Sanikwathi Tivani Zariff El Sabbahi Wippert Guardini
Haller takes the lead with 300 m left.
He’s done it! Haller finally takes the victory which gives him the stage wins record!
Tivani offers a nice 2nd to the Turtles, ahead of Silva.
Zariff beats El Sabbahi to 4th.
Then come Perera, Reinhardt, Petit, Sanikwathi and Dzervus.
The time limit is set at 28’34. That’ll could prove tough for Samudio, who’s 19 minutes back with 17 km left to ride.
But the Panamian champion comes home safe, with a 4 minutes margin.
Haller finally gets to wear the green jersey, with a 6 points margin to Tivani and 15 to Gall. There’ll be two other flat tage in the last three days.
But before that, let’s get back to the GC battle, with a mountain time-trial tomorrow!
