Tour of America - Stage 12
kandesbunzler26
This report is brought to you by Imladrik.

205 km are on the menu for today, between Richfield and Payson, for a third day in the mountains of Utah. Once again, we’ll ride along some national parks, like the Fishlake national park, to end near the Utah Lake. We’ll also have the occasion to see the city of Wales. Let’s hope the riders will not be too confused. Speaking of menu, I’ve had the occasion to learn that one of the local popular dish is the “funeral potatoes”. The name says it all, and let me wonder what one traditionnaly serves in a French funeral. Well, that’ll be another story. Now on to cycling!

Mountains we said! A cat. 1 climb to North Peak, immediately followed by a cat. 2 climb to Twin Knots, will be the main difficulties of the day, though they peak some 50 km before the finish line. The last 5 km will be on a cat. 4 climb.

The podium holders are deemed the favorites, but the finale might be for a punchier rider as it’s quite short.

The break seems to be settled early enough. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Hermans (1st best climber, 75 points) was the first to attack and has been alone for some kilometers. Behind comes a group of 9 with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Hamza, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Phelan (5th, 26 points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Morales Ortega (10th, 20 points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Bablidze, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Arias Villanueva, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Bernas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png De Laat, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Gall (2nd, 70 points) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Jacobsen.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Gaspar tried to get out, but he was brought back.
The closest GC wise is Gall, 28th at +8’51.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S12/ToAS12_1.png

The 10 aforementionned are finally joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Schachmann (3rd, 47 points) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Gunman (4th, 41 points). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Sakalou and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Kawasaki should also join in a few minutes.

Glanbia are back all alone at the head of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S12/ToAS12_2.png

In the end, Sakalou and Kawasaki couldn’t get to the head of the race and were brought back.

No sprint in Gunnison, Gall happily takes 6 bonus seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S12/ToAS12_3.png

The gap is 3’30 with 155 km to go. Glanbia maybe isn’t interested in letting yet another stage to the break.

Air New Zealand takes the points and the bonus seconds, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Phelan leading the break at the next sprint. With 89 km to go, the gap is 4’45. Zwift (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Walls and Rhim) joined Glanbia on the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S12/ToAS12_4.png

And we’re on with the climbing! North Peak (cat. 1, 14 km, 5,8%) is the first of the day. Gall and Hermans are sitting at the back of the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S12/ToAS12_5.png

Arias Villanueva and Hamza are no climbers, and it shows as they are quickly dropped. More surprising is that with 3,5 km left to climb, Hermans, Gunman and Schachmann are dropped too. The road to the polka dots seems clear for Gall, who’s the better climber and stage racer of those who’re left at the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S12/ToAS12_6.png

He indeed takes the 16 points ahead of De Laat. Twin Knolls begins right away (cat. 2, 5,7 km, 5,3%).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S12/ToAS12_7.png

The leaders’ gap to the peloton has grown to 10’23, so that feels good for the break.

Jacobsen profits from Gall’s work to take 10 points. The Austrian won’t be too worried about that, as he now has 94 points against Hermans’ 77. 54 km left in the race for the leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S12/ToAS12_8.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Burke attacks the peloton with 1,3 km to climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S12/ToAS12_9.png

20 km to go for Gall, Jacobsen and De Laat. It’s now all flat till the last 5 km. They have 30 seconds on Morales Ortega, 1 minute on Bablidze, 3’27 on a group of 5 (Schachmann, Hermans, Gunman, Phelan, Bernas), 6’46 on Arias Villanueva, 7’55 on Burke and 9 minutes on a 133 men peloton. Gall now has the virtual GC lead!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S12/ToAS12_10.png

Colombini and McCormick take matters in hands in the chase.

Next step is the lower side of Payson. With 6,5 km to go, Jacobsen tried to attack, but to no avail. The gap to the 130 men peloton is 8 minutes, so Gall is looking on a great jump in the GC!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S12/ToAS12_11.png

The leaders are on the finishing climb (cat. 4, 4,6 km, 4,6%)! The profile might be misleading, as there’s a flattish passage between two hardest, with a max gradient at 10%.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S12/ToAS12_12.png

Right now it’s hard to see past Gall for a second stage win in a row!

It’s the flamme rouge for the three leaders. The hardest part of the climb begins now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S12/ToAS12_13.png

It is indeed a second stage win in a row for Gall, the 3rd of the race for Ekoi – Le Creuset! Jacobsen is 2nd and De Laat 3rd. Now the clock is on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S12/ToAS12_14.png

Morales Ortega adds a good 4th to Podium Ambition’s tally, more than 3’30 after the winning trio.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S12/ToAS12_15.png

Bablidze brings home a group with Gunman, Hermans, Bernas and Schachmann.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S12/ToAS12_16.png

Phelan is 10th

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S12/ToAS12_17.png

And Raileanu leads the peloton to the finish line, 7 minutes after Gall.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S12/ToAS12_18.png

With this stage win, Gall climbs up to 5th on the GC, with 1 minute to Ranaweera. He also takes the lead in the points and mountain classification. More than that, he reverses the podium in the young rider classification, being only 40 seconds late on McNulty and having 4 minutes on Verschaeve.
McCormick, Colombini and Kraftwerk still lead the teams classification.

Still more mountains tomorrow, and with a mountaintop finish!
