Tour of America - Stage 9
kandesbunzler26
This report is brought to you by Imladrik.

Last day in Argentina for this year Tour of America! We stay in the province of San Luis, for a ride around San Francisco del Monte de Oro, to Carolina. Though the stage is “only” rated hilly, the three cat. 1 climbs and the 218 km could feel very mountainous. It could be a good day to attack the race leader, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Eastman.

The big thing to see during the stage will be the magnificient road to the Cerro del Amago. I’ll be happy to be in the media car!

Cycling wise, the organisers see a variety of riders able to win, so it might be one for the break.

As Glanbia is taking control of the peloton, and wit the first climb coming fast, we seem to have a break of the day, even though the last that went out of the pack will have to work a lot to join the head of the race. Taking their chance today are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Wandahl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Yamada, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Hopkins
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Murillo
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Schachmann, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Gunman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Gall, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Kelly, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Kusi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Hermans, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Martinelli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Mutsumine
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Johnson

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S9/ToAS9_27.png

The three men are together at the beginning of the Cerro del Amago (cat. 1, 9,4 km, 7,7%). The gap is 2’27.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S9/ToAS9_38.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Schachmann takes 16 points, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Gunman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Hermans. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Gall went a bit too early. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Murillo was dropped, and quickly loses time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S9/ToAS9_42.png

In the peloton, See Turtles, Colombini and Strava joined the chase. The gap is 5’07 with 154 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S9/ToAS9_43.png

2 climbs come next in quick succession: the Mirador del Esteban Aguero (cat. 3, 2,7 km, 5,7%) and the Mirador del Rio Grande (cat. 4, 1,6 km, 6,9%).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S9/ToAS9_44.png

Schachmann works hard to take 6 points and the provisionnal lead in the mountain classification (22 points) . Then come Gunman (16) and Gall (10).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S9/ToAS9_45.png

Hermans wins the next climb, ahead of Gunman and Schachmann. Schachmann has 23 points, Gunman 19.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S9/ToAS9_46.png

Only 2 km to rest before the Montana Nogoli (cat. 1, 13 km, 5,4%). The gap is 6’30 with 140 km left.

The flatter finish on this climb is favorable to Hermans, who takes 16 more points, ahead of Kelly and Gunman. Hermans takes the lead in the classification, with 31 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S9/ToAS9_47.png

Now it’s all downhill and flatt until the final 25 km..

There’s no fight for the sprint in Nogoli. 105 km left, the gap is 5’14.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S9/ToAS9_48.png

We’re back to where we began! 34 km left, the peloton has the break in sight.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S9/ToAS9_28.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Helme doesn’t wait for the catch to attack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S9/ToAS9_29.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Vogt brings everyone together right at the official start of the climb. There will be 12 km of flattish road after it ends!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S9/ToAS9_30.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Squire attacks on the first slopes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S9/ToAS9_31.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Jaramillo joins him, and the duo has 26 seconds with 7,7 km to climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Paulus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Raileanu lead the chase. There are still 124 men in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S9/ToAS9_32.png

There are other attacks, and a group of 6 has an 1 minute advantage with 6 km to climb: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Fabbro, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Gall, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Koshevoy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Squire, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Jaramillo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Gaspar.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S9/ToAS9_33.png

Squire accelerates and drops Fabbro.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S9/ToAS9_34.png

He’s himself dropped when Gall attacks!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S9/ToAS9_35.png

But that leads nowhere, the five are together with 3,6 km to climb. Another attack from Squire was well followed, but it puts some distance with Fabbro, who has been joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Poljanski, and to the 81 men peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S9/ToAS9_36.png

Squire is the strongest and takes 16 mountain points. Gall will end 1 point behind Hermans, who’ll wear the jersey tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S9/ToAS9_37.png

10 km to go, and there’s a big presence of McCormick at the head of the yellow jersey group, which is 38 men strong.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S9/ToAS9_39.png

Everyone is back together at the 5 km mark. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Reis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Paulus. That leads nowhere, though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S9/ToAS9_40.png

Flamme rouge, whe’re on for a sprint!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S9/ToAS9_41.png

200 m. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Le Gac and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Chevrier are well placed in the lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S9/ToAS9_23.png

It’s Chevrier with the win! Le Gac is 2nd to make it a great stage for Ekoi!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S9/ToAS9_24.png

Then we have Gaspar, Ludvigsson, Bablidze, Mendoza, Reis, Ranaweera, Rhim and Jaramillo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S9/ToAS9_25.png

The big change in the classification is in the mountain fight, now led by Hermans. That could well change tomorrow, with a shorter, but very mountainous day.
