Stage 6 Report

Stage 6 is the signature stage of the Balkans International. The race is always decided on closing climb to Ligkiades. Before that the riders face 226 tough kilometers including 7 categorized climbs (the finale is also a Cat 3 climb which given how hard it is, is a bit stingy on the part of the organizers).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lopez trails pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Areruya by just 3 seconds. Those two are the favorites for the stage, Areruya won it last year. But the top 11 are all less than a minute off the lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/favs.jpg

The first climb is just 5k into the race, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Menten starts the day with a 35-point lead in that competition. There are a lot of points today but not enough to close that gap unless you have a good amount to start.

Some stronger riders interested in the break today, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Waeytens is one of them and reaches the top of the first climb alone. Behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Cepeda Hernandez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Neuman take the rest.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/01.jpg

Xero are not interested in a big break today; they close down a group of 7 about 10k in. This leaves just 7 riders out front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/02.jpg

It seems they are ok as long as it doesn’t get to double digits, so 2 more riders are allowed to escape. In addition to Waeytens, Cepeda Hernandez and Neuman we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Dieteren, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Tesfatsion, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Bernard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Shirota, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Spanopoulos, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Hvideberg. Hvideberg is the only one who starts the day with enough KOM points to threaten the lead but he is by far the weakest climber in this group, which includes some accomplished mountain goats. Cepeda Hernandez is just 2’30 down on GC. The break is on the first of two Cat 4s which come in quick succession.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/03.jpg

Neuman, Tesfatsion and Waeytens take the points at the first of them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/04.jpg

It is Tesfatsion, Waeytens and then Shirota at the second one. Tesfatsion did have 18 points and is up to 26 points now, but even if takes maximum points from here on out he won’t catch Menten. Dieteren is having trouble staying with the group. Not long until they start the Cat 1 which is 11k at 5.2%

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/05.jpg

5k to the top of the Cat1 for the break. Dieteren never caught up and has been reabsorbed by the peloton which trails by 3’19. Xero controlling things.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/06.jpg

600 meters to the top and Hvideberg attacks, he needs to take maximum points here to have any hope of catching Menten.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/07.jpg

It was a brave effort but he doesn’t have the legs. Neuman takes 16 points ahead of Shirota, Waeytens and Tesfatsion. Hviderberg gets 5th and 6 points. He and Testatsion are 2nd and 3rd in the KOM competition but it is a distant 2nd and 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Vermeersch and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Strong lead the peloton over 3’52 down. There are now about 70k of flat valley roads before the next batch of climbing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Cepeda Hernandez punctures and spends about 10k getting back to the break.

103k to go as the break reach the next group of climbs with a lead of 3’16. It has never been larger than 4 minutes and Xero has been getting help from other GC teams. The break is currently on a Cat 2 climb which is 7k at 5.6%, it is followed fairly quickly by two Cat 3 climbs. After those no more KOM points until the 6 at the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/10.jpg

Neuman takes maximum points at the top. Bernard and Cepeda Hernandez are saving themselves for a run at stage victory. Hvideberg was dropped on the climb. The lead over the peloton is 2’44.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/11.jpg

At the first of the two Cat 3s it is Neuman again ahead of Tesfatsion and Shirota. Peloton at 1’49. Hvideberg almost caught.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/12.jpg

2k from the top of the second Cat 3 Spanopoulos and Neuman drop Shirota and Tesfatsion. Bernard and Cepeda Hernandez dropped back on the last climb and the peloton has almost caught them. Rabobank have been pushing the pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Spanopoulos drops Neuman and takes the points on his own. Spanopoulos has 1’20 over the peloton which is being led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Tolhoek. The rest of the break are caught are almost caught. Still 70k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/14.jpg

Neuman scored enough KOM points to move into 3rd behind Tesfatsion. Both passed Hvideberg. This is the virtual standings and probably close to how it will finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/std1.jpg

50k to go for the peloton. Spanopoulos’ lead has been between 1 and 2 minutes for a while. Aker (Bravo), EA (Alaphillippe), Xero (Boileau) and Fastned (Vanhoucke), doing the chasing. A group including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Van Niekerk, 9th on GC, was dropped briefly but they have been able to rejoin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Hofstede, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Tolhoek and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van der Kooij put an end to Spanopoulos’ time out front with 38k to go. From here mostly downhill until about the 20k mark when the first of the two finishing climbs begins. Still 136 riders in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/16.jpg

20k to go and the peloton hits the first of the two finishing climbs. This one goes to Mazia, it is 7.3k at 5.3% with pretty steady gradients, it is followed by a 7k descent before the final climb begins

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Gidich launches the first attack with 17k and about half the climb left. He has been aggressive all race. The peloton down to 78 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/18.jpg

Gidich is quickly shut down by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Tolhoek, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kinoshita tries but he can’t get a gap either. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Champoussin goes to the front to control things.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/19.jpg

Over the top pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Buchmann is the next to try, he is followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Olivier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Formolo. The Rabobank rider owed his teammates that. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Pidcock on the front of the peloton which is down to 36. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Roson, 18th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Van Poucke, 20th, are the highest placed riders dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Benoot leads a group of 8 across to the attackers. It includes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lopez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Gidich, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Areruya, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Valter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Amezawa, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Preidler with the latter using his descending skills to get across. The gap to the next group is just 16 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/21.jpg

Soon after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kinoshita brings them back together The group is down to 32 riders with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Van Niekerk one of those dropped, he doesn’t look likely to get back across this time.

Champoussin is back on the front as they hit the final climb to Ligkiades. 5.6k at 6.7% with the steepest ramps at the top. The Van Niekerk group is at 49 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/22.jpg

Kinoshita is the next to attack, Buchmann follows him. 4.3k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/23.jpg

Kinoshita is shut downs. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Mavrikakis has a go and gets a small gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/24.jpg

Gidich tracks down Mavrikakis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lopez launches.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/25.jpg

2.5k to go. Lopez has a gap of 12 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/26.jpg

1.8k to go for Lopez, Formolo tried and failed to catch him but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Areruya uses the Italian as a launch pad. The group looking very stretched now but no official gaps except for 9 seconds to Lopez.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/27.jpg

Areruya sweeps by Lopez and the Colombian looks to grab his wheel. These two have a gap on the rest. At the back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Benoot has been dropped from the lead group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/28.jpg

1k banner. Lopez and Areruya have 11 seconds over a 5-man group including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Olivier , pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Formolo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Valter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Amezawa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Sosa. Then 17 seconds to two more King Power riders: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Gidich and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Quita.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/29.jpg

500 meters for Areruya. Pretty much the same situation. Behind Quita is dropping back and has been caught by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Masnada. Further back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko is really struggling, he won’t be holding on to his podium spot.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/30.jpg

200 meters. Areruya looks like he has this one.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/31.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Areruya wins the final stage and the GC. No threepeat for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lopez as he takes 2nd on the stage and in the GC. He loses 7 seconds so with the time bonues he finishes 18 seconds down on Areruya in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/32.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Formolo edges pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Amezawa for the final bonus seconds. Those two and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Valter lose 17 seconds on the stage winner. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Olivier, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Sosa are the next 2, they lose 24 and 29 seconds respectively.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/33.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Gidich takes 8th on 41 seconds with a big gap over the next group. King Power with two in the top 10, they will take the teams jersey to go with their KOM jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/34.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Masnada and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Quita lead home the next group at 1’36 and 1’40. Make it 3 in the top 10 for King Power.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/35.jpg

The top 8 on the stage are the top 8 on GC in the same order, except Amezawa's stage win proves critical as he takes GC third from Formolo.

Kinoshita comes home 12th on the stage with a group on 1’54 and holds on to 9th in the GC. Lutsenko loses 2’13 but holds on to 10th overall.

Areruya and Lopez tie for the points win with Amezawa third there as well. Valter wins the young rider jersey, as expected, Pidcock is second.
