Stage 3 Report

Stage 3, along with stage 6, are the stages that typically determine the winner of the Balkans International. The stage goes 195k into Dubrovnik on the Croatian Coast. Along the way the riders tackle no less than 7 Cat 4s and 2 cat 2s and to finish it off there is a Cat 2 to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lopez leads the favorites, he will look to strike back after being thwarted on Stage 1. His team needs all the points he can get if they are to win the PT title. Last year he would have won the stage but could not quite catch pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Ssabagwanya, who was in the break, and had to settle for second. Ssabagwanya is back this year with his new team Grieg. Lopez does did manage to win this stage in 2021 when it was Stage 5 of the race.

It worked yesterday so why not try again. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Menten (in KOM jersey) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Evangelos (in Green jersey) are two of the first three attackers. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Piaskowy is the third. They are already on the first Cat 4.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/01.jpg

Evangelos takes first, he didn’t score much in the KOM yesterday so isn’t a big threat to Menten, who takes second. Piaskowy third. Six more riders are trying to get across to them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/02.jpg

Those 6 get across to form the break of the day and have a lead of 2’31 with 183k to go. The additions include another one of yesterday’s thrill seekers in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Scotson as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Milan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Van Eetvelt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Sprenger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Redy, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Kamyshev. Scotson also didn’t really score much in the KOM yesterday and all the rest are on zero, so Menten will be pleased with that. Piaskowy closest on GC at 4’37.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/03.jpg

Scotson leads through the first sprint on the front. Evangelos picks up 4 points and Menten 2.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/04.jpg

The second Cat 4 is very close. Menten only gets 1 point as Scotson and Van Eetvelt take 1st and 2nd. Menten up to 43 points, 10 points clear of second. Their lead is up to 4’30 with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Mundle doing the tempo for the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/05.jpg

With 130k to go the break just roll through the second sprint point. Their lead up to 5’50. Still Mundle doing the work. The break is about to start the sequence of 3 climbs (cat 2, cat 4, cat 4) that form the challenge in the middle part of the race. They will repeat this sequence a second time in another 50k.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/06.jpg

At the top of the Cat 2 Menten comes up a little short but takes 2nd behind Piaskowy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/07.jpg

At the first of the 2 Cat 4’s he gets it right and takes maximum points ahead of Redy. Menten also being helped by the fact the rest of the break are splitting the points. Noe of the rest of the break even into the top 5 in the competition yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/08.jpg

Third climb in the set goes to Redy ahead of Menten. Peloton is 6’23 down with 116k to go. Now a long mostly flat section interrupted by a single Cat 4 at Ivanica before they do the trio of climbs again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/09.jpg

94k to go for the peloton, they have the lead down to 4’41. EA (Alaphilippe), Minions (Marcos), Sony – Force India (Ocampo), Gazelle (Mundle), UBS (Brun) are working. The break are on the Ivanica climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/10.jpg

At the top of the climb Menten leaves it too late and the points go to Scotson, Evangelos and Redy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/11.jpg

The break reach the bottom of the trio of climbs for a second time with a 4’07 lead. 73k to go. Van Eetvelt leads them across the sprint point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/12.jpg

With 2k to climb in the Cat 2 Milan becomes the first rider dropped from the break. Peloton is 3’54 behind the leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/13.jpg

Van Eetvelt sets the pace on the climb dropping Kamyshev then Scotson and Evangelos but Piaskowy comes around to take 10 points. Van Eetvelt 2nd, Menten gets 3rd ahead of Redy. Sprenger is the other survivor.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/14.jpg

At the first of the two Cat 4s they all look a little tired. Van Eetvelt, Piaskowy and Sprenger take the points. Peloton have eased off and are at 5’20.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/15.jpg

At the final climb in the set Sprenger is strongest, a late charge nets Menten 2nd. He now has double the points of 2nd place pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Camrda. Redy gapped but might get back on, on the downhill. 4’46 to the peloton but now the riders will do that long flat stretch with only the Ivanica climb again before they tackle the finishing climbs in about 50k.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/16.jpg

Full KOM standings, Piaskowy has got himself up to 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/std1.jpg

38k to go, EA leading the chase, Kamyshev and Scotson are caught. 2’27 to the leaders. Redy never was able to rejoin. About 40 riders were dropped from the peloton over the last climb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Gebrezgabihier the most notable.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/17.jpg

On the Ivanica Cat 4 Van Eetvelt takes maximum points ahead of Piaskowy and Sprenger. Menten dropped, but he has done his job for the day. Only points after this are at the finish. Peloton at 1’56 with 33k to go. None of these riders close to the quality of Ssabagwanya so it seems unlikely they will survive. The pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Gebrezgabihier group has rejoined the peloton which is mostly complete.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/18.jpg

The four breakaway survivors (Menten rejoined) reach the finishing climb with a gap of 45 seconds to the peloton which is being led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Slagter. The final climb is officially 8.5k at 4.3% but it is really 3 parts, a 5k climb averaging about 6%, a 2k decline and a 1.7k uphill sprint to the finish with gradients reaching 12%.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Van Dijke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Balmer make the catch with 7k left in the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Gidich launches the first attack. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko closest to him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/21.jpg

5k banner. Gidich has 20 seconds but the chasers don’t look too worried. Wirtgen still chasing. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Areruya behind him now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/22.jpg

The situation much the same as Gidich reaches the end of part 1. All the top GC guys stacked up behind Wirtgen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/23.jpg

Still Gidich by 20 seconds as he reaches the bottom of the final climb. 2.2k to go. Wirtgen has pulled pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Valter slightly ahead of the chasers as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Geniets has let the wheel go. Still 100 riders in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/24.jpg

Valter launches after Gidich with about 1.2k to go. Wirtgen is next, but dropping back, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Pidcock slightly ahead of his teammate Areruya, and the race leader, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/25.jpg

900 meters and Valter catches Gidich. The next three are the three mentioned before then it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kinoshita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Buchmann, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lopez from left to right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/26.jpg

700 meters. Areruya to the front. Lopez and Kinoshita coming fast.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/27.jpg

400 meters, situation is about the same with Areruya leading Valter, Lopez and Gidich. Behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Amezawa has made up the most ground.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/28.jpg

100 meters, really no change and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Areruya decides he can celebrate

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/29.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lopez edges pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Valter for second. A brave ride from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Gidich nets 4th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Amezawa is 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/30.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Formolo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Olivier come late to take 6th and 7th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kinoshita is the best of the puncheurs in 8th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Van Poucke in 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Buchmann in 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/31.jpg

Areruya gets a 7 second gap, the rest of the GC riders back to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Preidler in 18th get s.t.

Which means . . . that Areruya is the new race leader by 3 seconds over Lopez and 7 seconds over Lutsenko. Lopez does have a 1-point lead over Areruya in the points competition. Valter easily leads the young rider standings and King Power still lead the team’s competition but Aker have closed their lead to 36 seconds.
