Balkans International
The Balkans International starts as it continues, with a tough hilly stage that probably falls into the medium mountains category. This one goes 187 km from Banja Luka to Pajici in Bosnia. Three sprint points and 5 categorized climbs await the riders plus the finish is a Cat 3 climb.
The favorite for the stage is the same as the favorite for the race, Lopez. Indeed he won this stage on his way to overall victory last year.
A lot of interest in the break but the peloton is not willing to let a lot of riders go and by the time they reach the first sprint point 4 riders have a gap: Sobrero, Mugisha Van Gestel and Bdadou. The order at the sprint is Bdadou, Sobrero, Van Gestel
At the second sprint it is Van Gestel, Mugisha, Bdadou. They lead by 3’10 with 160k to go.
123k to go for the peloton. Fastned, Evonik, Rabobank, Xero, EA Vesuvio, King Power and UBS have all been contributing to keep the break under control. Right now their lead is 4’43, it has been around that for a while. The break is on the first climb of the race, the Cat 1 to Krusevo Brdo (8.5k at 6.7%), it is the longest climb on today’s stage, Mugisha is the best climber in the break, he is the favorite to take 16 points and a big early edge in the KOM competition.
Mugisha launches the first attack with 800 meters to climb. The peloton aren’t messing around and have closed to 2’10 thanks to work by Kurianov.
Mugisha just makes his superiority count and takes the points ahead of Van Gestel, Sobrero and Bdadou.
The rest of the points go to the domestiques working in the peleton, specifically: Kurianov, Matthews, and Menten. They have slowed down a little and the lead is back out to over 3 minutes
66k to go for the break. Their lead is 3’28. Most of the climbing in the stage is between here and the finish. First the riders will tackle a Cat 2 to Petibor (6.2k at 5.1%). Sobrero punctured and is just getting back on in time for the climb.
A late push from Mugisha secures him the points ahead of Van Gestel and Bdadou. Sobrero has been dropped and is back somewhere in the mist. Peloton at 2’28.
EA Vesuvio did a lot of the chasing on the climb and are prominent near the front as the peloton crosses the top. Gap is back to 3’07. Sobrero has not been able to rejoin his companions and looks to be finished for the day.
Bdadou takes out the final sprint with 39k to ride. Peloton at 2’07, a few riders have been dropped. The break is about to start the next climb, a tough Cat 3.
With the peloton closing in Van Gestel attacks, Bdadou goes with him but Mugisha is dropped. Still 6.6k to the Cat 3 points.
Geniets pulls Valter and Areruya clear of the peloton and up to the breakaway. Still 5k in the climb.
30k to ride, as Geniets tires Valter and Areruya persist. They have 44 seconds over the peloton who look a little disorganized. Vanhoucke on the front, Lopez and Gidich near the front but lacking helpers at the moment.
Valter and Areruya go over the top with a lead of 45 seconds. Valter doing all the work so far. With KOM points going to the GC guys Mugisha is probably safe to begin designing his KOM jersey for tomorrow.
Vanhoucke pulls a 25-rider chase group clear over the top of the climb. They have closed to within 23 seconds of the leaders where Valter has gone back to the front, maybe regretting his decision to let Areruya lead on the descent. Biggest names missing from the chase group are Kelderman and Skujins.
As they start the final categorized climb other than the finish, a Cat 4, the front 3 have been caught to create a 28-rider leading group. They have 45 seconds over a 139 rider peloton where Bralirwa, Tinkoff and ELCO are leading the chase. Although this is the final categorized climb there is a significant uncategorized climb immediately after it.
16k to race, 1.5k to climb. Schmid attacks.
Schmid has a 15 second lead as he takes the points. The peloton is 1’02 behind the chase group with Meurisse and Kelderman on the front. The uncategorized climb is next. It goes to Kute and is 4.2 k at 6.5%. Schmid will reach it in just under 3k.
About 1k into the climb Preidler and Quita put an end to Schmid’s adventure. The lead group is down to 26 with a few domestiques dropped. The 129-rider peloton is 1’24 behind with Mavrikakis on the front.
Just shy of the top on the Kute climb, Benoot, Kinoshita, and Lutsenko go on the attack. Gidich tries to follow. A few more domestiques have been dropped from the chase group including Gavars, the last helper for Lopez.
Kinoshita and Lutsenko drop Benoot but as they reach the top Olivier goes to the front of the chase group and begins to close them down. Schmid has been dropped from the chase group and is back in the peloton which is 1’08 behind the front of the race.
Just under 5k to go and 3k to the final climb. Olivier and Buchmann have bridged up to the front 2 and that foursome has 16 seconds on the chase which is being led by Paez. Ndayisenga is the latest rider to be dropped. The peloton are closing in on the chase group.
2.2k to go, as they reach the final climb the 4 attackers are almost caught. A 22-rider group has broken off the front of the peloton and is 57 seconds down on the riders pictured.
1.4k to climb. Kinoshita in front ahead of Lutsenko and Olivier.
1k banner, Kinoshita and Lutsenko lead ahead of Olivier, then Buchmann, Amezawa, Areruya and Lopez. The riders shown have gapped the next 7. The 7 dropped are Benoot, Preidler, Paez, Cepeda Hernandez, Roson, Masnada, and Peters.
700 meters, now Lopez begins to move, he has been supremely patient. Gidich has been gapped by those shown.
400 meters. Still Lutsenko from Kinoshita and Lopez. The others in the front group are Olivier, Buchman, Areruya, Valter, Amezawa, Formolo Van Niekerk, and Sosa. 30 seconds to Masnada and Gidich who are next on the road.
200 meters, Lutsenko still has a solid lead.
Lutsenko wins Stage 1 of the Balkans International. Gidich and Masnada have closed the gap to the others for now.
Lopez just gets up for 2nd ahead of Kinoshita and Olivier. Areruya is 5th, Amezawa is 6th but 7 seconds down.
Van Niekerk is 7th ahead of Formolo and Valter. Those 3 lose 11 seconds on the winner. Sosa hangs on for 10th. 24 seconds down, Buchmann gets the same time.
Valter leads in the young rider competition (he won that last year so he is going for back-to-back), King Power has the team’s lead.
