Stage 3
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/P.jpg

Today is the big day for both the puncheurs as well as those time trialists who are decent on climbs and look to distance their less agile rivals. Some more KoM points are up for grabs, too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/01.jpg

Two previous breakaway riders, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/caj.png Ezquerra and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Horvat, open proceedings with the first attacks.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Paprstka, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Tarvis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Peden, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Duric, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Wohrer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Diaz Suarez join them, but the peloton isn’t happy with such a big group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Peden, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Duric, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Horvat and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Paprstka go again, this time joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Berthet and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Simmons.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/04.jpg

Many more riders tried, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Alben, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Bovenhuis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lpu.png Vandenabeele. But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Zwift and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Los Pollos Hermanos shut almost all moves down.

Eventually, five riders survived ahead of the peloton: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Duric, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Horvat and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Peden, who had left the other three behind, as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Tarvis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Parashchak, who are now trying to catch up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/06.jpg

By the first mountain sprint, they’ve come together but only lead the peloton by some three minutes. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Duric wins 6 points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Tarvis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Parashchak. With another 6 points at the second mountain sprint, he’d take sole control of the mountain jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Tarvis is the quickest over the line at the intermediate sprint. The riders are really quite unlucky with the weather, by the way, as it’s raining for the third day straight here in Denmark.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Parashchak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Tarvis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Horvat take the points at the second mountain sprint. Popo4Ever now have two riders with 8 and 6 points each, but the classification lead remains with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Erdenesuren and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Hansen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Peden and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Duric are distanced on this climb and are unable to return.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/10.jpg

Throughout these hills, the peloton remains intact but it’s very stretched out. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Zmorka keeps himself in excellent position, continuously among the first 10-15 riders. The now three leaders have around 1’10 of a lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/11.jpg

The final 15 kilometers are the hardest of the day with six short but steep ramps, including the final one to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/13.jpg

Following the first two of those hills, the puncheurs make their move! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Honore attacks, he’s followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Yates, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Kanerva, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Villella and then, with a small gap, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Moscon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Van Garderen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Asgreen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/14.jpg

But a combined effort by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Petit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Sirironnachai neutralizes the attack. Many of the top sprinters are at the very front of the peloton here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Asgreen attacks again on the third to last hill and he quickly catches up to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Tarvis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Parashchak, who had left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Horvat behind a while ago. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Villella goes after him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/16.jpg

We also have the first seemingly more significant and permanent split in the peloton. The most prominent time trialists caught on the wrong side are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Gonzalez Salas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Sütterlin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Bissegger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Noia, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Belevics, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lpu.png Sajnok and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Golovash.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/17.jpg

At the summit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Villella has made it to the front, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Van Garderen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Sirironnachai have a gap on the rest of the peloton, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Honore and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Walscheid lead the way.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/18.jpg

With 3 kilometers and two hills to go, the front six are caught, but a total of 27 riders have broken away from the rest of the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Dunbar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Paillot, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Zmorka and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Beniusis are the major time trialists here, but the latter three are only just hanging on near the back.

A number of sprinters are also still in here, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lpu.png Bonifazio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Bauhaus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Reinhardt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Petit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Zabel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Howard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Walls.

It's an odd group composition, but going into the final 2 kilometers, the puncheurs attack! (I missed the pic here, apologies) pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Sirironnachai initiates the move.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/19.jpg

And with 800 meters to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Sirironnachai is in pole position. He's followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Van Garderen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Villella, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Asgreen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Howard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Hoelgaard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Dunbar is yet to make a move to distance the other time trialists in this group. Meanwhile, the main group is desperately trying to close that gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Van Garderen is catching up with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Sirironnachai. A bit further behind, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Zabel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Reinhardt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lpu.png Bonifazio are sprinting for Top 10 finishes. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Moscon, who missed the crucial move, is trying to make up some ground.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/22.jpg

The final 200 meters are almost flat. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Van Garderen is a little bit quicker on paper than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Sirironnachai …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/23.jpg

… but he doesn’t have enough in the tank. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Villella has the fastest finish, but he was too far behind: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Sirironnachai wins stage 3 of the Post Danmark Rundt!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Asgreen has a solid day on home soil even if he misses the podium by a few meters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Hoelgaard is next, both are on the same time as the winners, then there’s a gap of 19 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/25.jpg

In a continuation of odd sprinter performances (though this time in another manner), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lpu.png Bonifazio outdoes puncheurs pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Kanerva and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Moscon to finish 6th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Zabel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Howard are next ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Dunbar.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Paillot clings on to the back of the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Dunbar group, hoping to get a small gap on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Zmorka and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Beniusis, but no gap is given.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Denmark/S3/27.jpg

And actually, a massive sprint by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Debesay makes it so that the next group of around 35 riders are also measured with the same time. Quite generous from the jury, but very lucky for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Kung, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Rekita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Brunel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Jungels, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Norsgaard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Tesfom and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Wolf, the best time trialists who are given the same time as the group ahead of them and are now very much in the running for a Top 10 result.

Every other notable time trialist is in the following group, which is timed 1’57 behind this one. While Top 20 spots will still be available to them, it’s tough to envision them climbing further.

For now, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Sirironnachai takes the yellow jersey and will likely keep it tomorrow - although pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Walls can take it back with another stage win. The Brit also remains in the lead of the U25 classification, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Zabel is the new leader in the points classification following his Top 10 result today.
