Stage 3 Report

Stage 3 of the Tour de Vineyards takes the riders 125k to Takaka Hill. The stage features two early sprint points as well as a Cat 3 and Cat 4 climb but the real impact from the stage will all occur in the closing kilometers as the riders tackle the finishing climb which is 15k at 6.2%.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Ranaweera is the best climber in the race and he is the number one favorite.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/favs.jpg

Interesting move as the Yellow Jersey is in the first attack of the day. The first sprint point is in just 5k so he may be aiming for that (and the second is not far beyond). Others in this early attack are KOM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Taubel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Touze, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Baudin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Syritsa, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Rodriguez

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/01.jpg

Those 6 prove to be the break of the day and they have a 2-minute lead as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Zabel easily wins the first sprint to add 6 points to his total. With Zabel in the break Kraftwerk won’t have to do the chasing despite having the stage favorite.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/02.jpg

Zabel smokes the rest of the group again to take the 2nd sprint as well. The lead over the peloton up to 2’35. UBS leading the peloton at the moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/03.jpg

But the sprint points seem to have been the extent of Zabel’s ambition and he drops back to the peloton after the 2nd sprint.

93k to go and a 3’25 lead as the break hit the first climb, the Cat 3 Raeys Saddle (3.7k at 4.8%). Taubel needs 8 points from the two climbs to put himself over 20 and safe from the stage winner in the KOM competition.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/04.jpg

Taubel won’t make that benchmark as he fails to score on the Cat 3. The points go to Touze, Baudin and Syritsa.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/05.jpg

75k for the peloton as the have brought the lead back down under 4 minutes. Zabel joined by most of the UBS team on the front although it is mainly him and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Dillier doing the work.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/06.jpg

Taubel also fails to score at the second KOM. Again it is Touze followed by Baudin and Syritsa. The break’s lead is 3’18, next stop Takaka Hill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/07.jpg

19k to ride. UBS have done most of the chasing along with Zabel but now Jura are helping out. The break have a lead of 1’47 with 6k to the start of the climb. The hardest part of the climb is in the first 4k with gradients up to 13%.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Janssen leads the peloton on to the climb. The break at 1’41.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Taubel is the first rider dropped from the break and he is quickly caught by the Jura-led peloton.

10k to go for the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Rodriguez is caught leaving 3 out front with a 38 second lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Barbio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Natarov on the front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Stüssi third wheel. The Yellow Jersey has been dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/10.jpg

8k to climb, they are about to reach the short flat section half way up the climb. Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Syritsa left out front and he has just 13 seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Liphongyu leading the chase now. The peloton still has 84 riders officially but they are pretty stretched out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/11.jpg

Immediately after the flat section pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Lunke attacks, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Ranaweera on his wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Masnada at the front of the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/12.jpg

Masnada and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Schelling bridge up before they reach the 5k banner. Oddly pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Nerz looks like he is trying to attack as well but he will have to be careful he isn’t just helping the rest. The next three are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Campero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Guldhammer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Alarcon.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/13.jpg

Nerz leads Campero and Alarcon past the other attackers. Kraftwerk may need to firm up team leadership before the Tour of America. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Main and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Lunke have latched on to the move as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/14.jpg

The gap goes over 30 seconds before Ranaweera launches a counter-move.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/15.jpg

Ranaweera comes to his sense and relents. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Darbellay takes over the chasing. The front 5 have 30 seconds over a 65-rider peloton with 3.3k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/16.jpg

But Kraftwerk don’t have much faith in Nerz and it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Ho who brings a 20-rider group within 17 seconds of the leaders with 2k to ride.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/17.jpg

At the 1k banner the two groups come together to form a 25-rider lead group with most of the favorites. Spark are leading the chase behind for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Schleck.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Campero launches the sprint with 700 meters to go. The gradients are around 6% to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/19.jpg

300 meters and Campero still has a good lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Monsalve closest to him then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Ranaweera. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Nerz and a handful of others have been dropped reducing the front group to 21 but the next group is pretty close and the gaps could shift a lot still.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/20.jpg

Under 200 meters, the Bolivian Champion still going strong. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Guldhammer has moved into contention for the podium. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Masnada also still in with a chance.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Campero celebrates. Behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Lunke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Schelling are moving fastest.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Monsalve 2nd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Schelling passes the rest in the closing meters to take what could be important bonus seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Guldhammer 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Ranaweera 5th. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Lunke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Masnada, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Stüssi

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Smith and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Pomoshnikov wrap up the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Vineyards/S3/25.jpg

The gaps end up staying the same and the first 21 riders all get the same time and a 39 second gap to the second group. The first three on the stage will be the first three on GC. With UBS and Zalgiris having 2 riders, Jura and Kraftwerk 3 and Sauber 4, in the first group, there could be some good depth scoring if they don’t get dropped in the TTT.

Campero also gets the Mountains jersey, there are no more KOM points so he will win that jersey. Zabel holds a nice lead in points and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Gall takes over the best young rider jersey (Ekoi have 4 of the top 5 in that competition). Jura and Kraftwerk are tied for the lead in teams, whichever is better in the TTT will likely take that competition.
