Stage 21
The last stage is traditionally a tour d’honneur and so it will be today too as the only classification still fought for is the points classification. Yates only has an eight point lead on second place and a 12 point lead on third place there, but with those places held by Phinney and Lecuisinier the Brit probably isn’t in danger from them. So with a maximum of 60 points on offer today and the traditional pan flat final on the Champs Élysées the only contender should be Grosu who’s 49 points behind. But that also means Yates needs only a 7th place today or more points in the intermediate sprint than his rival to secure the jersey – and Grosu has to win the stage in any case. At least the Romanian NC is the favourite for today’s stage.
Right from the start a break of five riders gets away. If Quita, Suter, Madouas, Kwiatkowski and Geniets make it to the intermediate sprint Yates will need only 2 points from the final sprint to be safe in green. With a gap of 1’20 and 14.5 km to the sprint that should be sealed.
And the break just rolls through the sprint. Arensman tried to bridge to them earlier but is still 1’30 behind the five and 1’11 in front of the peloton. It’s not hard to tell that the riders are already on the circuit up and down the Champs Élysées.
The Dutchman is finally back in the peloton. It’s not much happening as the break still has a lead of 2’28 with 68 km to go, but we wanted to take the chance for a nice picture of the Eiffeltower – though the rain somewhat spoils it.
With 50 km to go the gap is down to 1’45. It seems like the peloton has full control of the situation. The break is now in the famous tunnel under the Tuileries Garden. We also see the only elevation of the circuit which clearly isn’t hard enough for any attacks.
With 22 km to go the break crosses the finish line for the penultimate time – though there isn’t a drawn line at all, so let’s hope there’s no photo finish to decide. The peloton is 54’’ behind.
The catch is made with 9 km to go, though Madouas shows his fighting spirit and tries to stay in front solo.
He actually stays in front for another 5 km before he’s reeled in too. The sprint preparation has already started, but at the moment only Grosu and Farantakis have any leadouts – and those are down to one for the former and two for the latter. That’s no good sign for the two given the previous sprints of the Tour.
With 2.3 km to go Koumpetsos is the last leadout left.
With 1.5 km to go Van der Kooij has come to the front from some way back and takes over the leadout duties.
But not for long as Grosu launches his sprint shortly afterwards. Oliveira seems to be the only one immediately trying to follow with all the other sprinters bunched up behind Farantakis and his leadout. Will the Romanian be able to keep his momentum going long enough to stay in front? He still has 1 km to go.
He probably doesn’t as the others are nearly at his height with 500 m to go. Farantakis, Samolenkov and Prasad are the only ones a bit in front of the big bunch.
With 100 m to go Samolenkov has taken over the lead, but Prasad looks a bit faster. Will the remaining road be long enough for him to even take the win?
It isn’t and Samolenkov takes the prestigious win! Prasad comes in 2nd place with Contreras in 3rd. Behind them Jakobsen, Kiskonen, Yates and Trondsen finish pretty much on par in 4th to 7th place. That also means the Brit wins the green jersey. Behind them it’s very confused, but the jury awards the final Top 10 places to Sureda, Farantakis and Cerny.
Further back Phinney wins the sprint of the GC podium for 20th place in front of Lecuisinier and Bernal. I assume the man in yellow will be able to cope with this defeat.
Congratulations once again to Samolenkov for winning the closing stage of the 2023 Tour de France! The Russian couldn’t live up to his favourite status in most of the previous sprints, but maybe he just kept some reserves for today.
Lecuisinier celebrates his 2nd win in the most prestigious cycling race of the world. Phinney (1’27 behind) and Bernal (4’58 behind) complete the GC podium.
Warchol wins the KoM classification after a fierce battle with Penasa in the final week. Lecuisinier adds the last podium spot to his palmarès. But we also like to give a shout out to Khodayari (10th place) for his long stint in the polka dots as well as those who fought for the points in the first two weeks, making this classification the closest one of the Tour for most of the time.
It wasn’t as close for Yates to take the green jersey home he took over after stage 5. But Phinney and Lecuisinier came quite close in the end to finish 2nd and 3rd in this classification.
Pogacar wins the U25 classification. He also took over the white jersey early in the race, but McNulty was able to stay close to him until the last week. He finally had a gap of 3’13. Johannessen in 3rd place already had a gap of 48’53.
And Cedevita gets another classification win as the best team! Gazelle always stayed close and finished only 2’05 behind. finished 3rd with a gap of 14’03.
And that’s it for this year’s Tour de France. À l'année prochaine!
