Stage 19

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/top_tdf_19.jpg

It’s the last mountain stage and the last chance for the climbers to gain some time in the GC before the final long TT tomorrow. But before the final HC climb to Annecy-Semnoz will be tackled there are four cat. 3 climbs and a cat. 1 climb to ride, so there are quite some chances for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Penasa to overtake pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol in the KoM classification as he’s only 7 points behind. And as long as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier doesn’t do something really legendary today the KoM classification should only be decided between those two. But speaking of the GC leader: Will he make it three stage wins in a row? Will he keep his lead of 2’21 over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney (or even further improve it) before the 52 km TT tomorrow? Or is the American able to get some time back?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0328.jpg

We have a big break once again – though it’s still two groups with only 2 km to go in the first climb. The most interesting rider is the one who’s not out front: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Penasa didn’t make it to the break (and didn’t try at all to be fair). But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol did, so it’s his term to grab some KoM points to make his jersey safe. We’ll have a closer look at the composition of the group(s) when the situation is clearer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0329.jpg

The first KoM sprint is so contested the Pole doesn’t even score a point. Instead it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Kirsch and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Roman there. At least the Luxembourger is fighting to finish 3rd in the classification, though we have no idea what the other two are up for.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0330.jpg

At the second KoM sprint it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Kirsch (80) in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Roman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0331.jpg

Before the third cat. 3 climb the groups at the front finally merge, resulting in a single group of 22 riders with 5 minutes to the peloton:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Leknessund, Senni (17th in GC) and Warchol (11th)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Eg and Quintana (12th)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Bouchard and Habtemichael (18th)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Chamorro and Quita
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Cattaneo (13th) and Slagter
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Hoehn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Kirsch (14th)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Nesset
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Parra Bustamente
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Prado (20th)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Roman
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Schultz
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Seboka
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Williams
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Zimmermann

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0332.jpg

The next KoM sprint is won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Nesset and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol (now on 137 points).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0333.jpg

No points for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol at the fourth cat. 3 sprint again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0334.jpg

The break is still together at the foot of the Mont Revard (cat. 1; 18.9 km at 5.1 %). The peloton is 5 minutes behind. There’s already a gruppetto including some of the sprinters that’s 10’39 behind. The stage is short and there are two more big climbs to come, so we’ll keep an eye on them and the time limit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0335.jpg

The break crumbled apart in the climb, but we’ll only have a closer look when the descent is done and the smaller gaps are undone again. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues takes the KoM sprint at the top in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol who’s now on 149 points. That’s just enough to seal the polka dots for him as long as he makes it to Paris.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0336.jpg

The intermediate sprint isn’t contested by the group of nine that’s now in front. The group consists of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Kirsch, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Senni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Cattaneo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Nesset, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Quintana, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Habtemichael, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Chamorro. A chasing group of 6 is 45’’ behind. The gap to the peloton is 7 minutes, the gruppetto is 26 minutes behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0337.jpg

The chasing group made it back but was instantly dropped again when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Cattaneo attacked at the foot of the final climb to Annecy-Semnoz (HC; 13.8 km at 7.7 %). Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Quintana, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Kirsch and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Nesset were able (or willing) to follow his move.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0338.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Quintana is the next to accelerate, he takes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Cattaneo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues with him. Further back there are the first attacks from the group of favourites. Surprisingly the attackers are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Barguil and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Hirt. The former creates a gap, the latter needs a second try to start his solo chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0339.jpg

With 5 km to go the leading three have half a minute to a first chasing group. Then there are the remnants of the break essentially one by one. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Barguil is 4 minutes behind the front with 20’’ on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Hirt and another 20’’ on the group of favourites. From the experience of the last stages that’s about the gap the French needs to be with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney after their usual attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0340.jpg

And we were right with this prediction, though the big two take the rest of the favourites with them. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Giannoutsos (15th in the GC) is the only one of the Top 15 already dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0341.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Barguils next attack eliminates pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png McNulty (10th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Penasa (8th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Prado (20th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Gregaard (19th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Carapaz (16th) from the group of favourites, but the gap to the front is still about 3 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0342.jpg

Under the red kite the front group is back to 5 riders as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Habtemichael and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol came back. But the favourites are less than a minute behind after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Bernal dropped the others. Italian NC pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Senni is still in between.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0343.jpg

The sprint has started and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol leads in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Cattaneo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues. It’s between those three with 500 m to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0344.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol takes the stage win in style by adding the polka dots and a place in the Top 10 (at least for now)! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Cattaneo was close all the time but just couldn’t accelerate anymore. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues completes the podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0345.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Quintana and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Habtemichael finish in 4th and 5th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney dropped pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Bernal in the end who even finishes behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Senni. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Sivakov completes the Top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0346.jpg

Then it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Pogacar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Barguil, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Hirt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Carthy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Kirsch in 11th to 15th place. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Penasa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png McNulty are 16th and 17th in the end. The time limit is 1h01’39 and shouldn’t be a problem for anyone.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0347.jpg

Congratulations to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol for a great stage win and the win in the KoM classifiaction! There have been no changes in the other classifications.
