Stage 19
It’s the last mountain stage and the last chance for the climbers to gain some time in the GC before the final long TT tomorrow. But before the final HC climb to Annecy-Semnoz will be tackled there are four cat. 3 climbs and a cat. 1 climb to ride, so there are quite some chances for Penasa to overtake Warchol in the KoM classification as he’s only 7 points behind. And as long as Lecuisinier doesn’t do something really legendary today the KoM classification should only be decided between those two. But speaking of the GC leader: Will he make it three stage wins in a row? Will he keep his lead of 2’21 over Phinney (or even further improve it) before the 52 km TT tomorrow? Or is the American able to get some time back?
We have a big break once again – though it’s still two groups with only 2 km to go in the first climb. The most interesting rider is the one who’s not out front: Penasa didn’t make it to the break (and didn’t try at all to be fair). But Warchol did, so it’s his term to grab some KoM points to make his jersey safe. We’ll have a closer look at the composition of the group(s) when the situation is clearer.
The first KoM sprint is so contested the Pole doesn’t even score a point. Instead it’s Rodrigues in front of Kirsch and Roman there. At least the Luxembourger is fighting to finish 3rd in the classification, though we have no idea what the other two are up for.
At the second KoM sprint it’s Kirsch (80) in front of Roman and Rodrigues.
Before the third cat. 3 climb the groups at the front finally merge, resulting in a single group of 22 riders with 5 minutes to the peloton:
Leknessund, Senni (17th in GC) and Warchol (11th)
Eg and Quintana (12th)
Bouchard and Habtemichael (18th)
Chamorro and Quita
Cattaneo (13th) and Slagter
Hoehn
Kirsch (14th)
Nesset
Parra Bustamente
Prado (20th)
Rodrigues
Roman
Schultz
Seboka
Williams
Zimmermann
The next KoM sprint is won by Rodrigues in front of Nesset and Warchol (now on 137 points).
No points for Warchol at the fourth cat. 3 sprint again.
The break is still together at the foot of the Mont Revard (cat. 1; 18.9 km at 5.1 %). The peloton is 5 minutes behind. There’s already a gruppetto including some of the sprinters that’s 10’39 behind. The stage is short and there are two more big climbs to come, so we’ll keep an eye on them and the time limit.
The break crumbled apart in the climb, but we’ll only have a closer look when the descent is done and the smaller gaps are undone again. Rodrigues takes the KoM sprint at the top in front of Warchol who’s now on 149 points. That’s just enough to seal the polka dots for him as long as he makes it to Paris.
The intermediate sprint isn’t contested by the group of nine that’s now in front. The group consists of Kirsch, Rodrigues, Senni, Cattaneo, Nesset, Quintana, Habtemichael, Warchol and Chamorro. A chasing group of 6 is 45’’ behind. The gap to the peloton is 7 minutes, the gruppetto is 26 minutes behind.
The chasing group made it back but was instantly dropped again when Cattaneo attacked at the foot of the final climb to Annecy-Semnoz (HC; 13.8 km at 7.7 %). Only Rodrigues, Quintana, Kirsch and Nesset were able (or willing) to follow his move.
Quintana is the next to accelerate, he takes Cattaneo and Rodrigues with him. Further back there are the first attacks from the group of favourites. Surprisingly the attackers are Barguil and Hirt. The former creates a gap, the latter needs a second try to start his solo chase.
With 5 km to go the leading three have half a minute to a first chasing group. Then there are the remnants of the break essentially one by one. Barguil is 4 minutes behind the front with 20’’ on Hirt and another 20’’ on the group of favourites. From the experience of the last stages that’s about the gap the French needs to be with Lecuisinier and Phinney after their usual attack.
And we were right with this prediction, though the big two take the rest of the favourites with them. Giannoutsos (15th in the GC) is the only one of the Top 15 already dropped.
Barguils next attack eliminates McNulty (10th), Penasa (8th), Prado (20th), Gregaard (19th) and Carapaz (16th) from the group of favourites, but the gap to the front is still about 3 minutes.
Under the red kite the front group is back to 5 riders as Habtemichael and Warchol came back. But the favourites are less than a minute behind after Phinney, Lecuisinier and Bernal dropped the others. Italian NC Senni is still in between.
The sprint has started and Warchol leads in front of Cattaneo and Rodrigues. It’s between those three with 500 m to go.
And Warchol takes the stage win in style by adding the polka dots and a place in the Top 10 (at least for now)! Cattaneo was close all the time but just couldn’t accelerate anymore. Rodrigues completes the podium.
Quintana and Habtemichael finish in 4th and 5th. Lecuisinier and Phinney dropped Bernal in the end who even finishes behind Senni. Sivakov completes the Top 10.
Then it’s Pogacar, Barguil, Hirt, Carthy and Kirsch in 11th to 15th place. Penasa and McNulty are 16th and 17th in the end. The time limit is 1h01’39 and shouldn’t be a problem for anyone.
Congratulations to Warchol for a great stage win and the win in the KoM classifiaction! There have been no changes in the other classifications.
