Stage 18
The next mountain stage for the peloton today, but it’s probably no big GC fight ahead with only a cat. 1 climb (Col de la Croix Fry) and a following descent to Le Grand Bornan at the end of the stage. But if a rider loses time today it’ll probably be much of it, also meaning the time limit could come into play for some of the worse climbers. Even more so as there are two HC climbs within the first 85 km of the stage (Col du Glandon and Col de la Madeleine). That’s also a good setup for the KoM fight with up to 65 points on offer for the riders.
It took till the first climb (Col du Glandon; HC; 21.9 km at 5.2 %) for a break to establish, but finally a group of 16 got away and it includes some familiar names as well as KoM and / or GC contenders. The full list is:
Evans and Schultz
Carapaz (17th GC; 40 KoM points) and Giannoutsos (15th; 36)
Chamorro (61)
Johannessen (42)
Khodayari (62)
Kirsch (14th; 52)
Penasa (8th; 86)
Pinot (20th; 12)
Prado (22nd)
Quintana (12th)
Roman
Warbasse
Warchol (11th; 83)
Williams (32)
Due to technical difficulties there’s no shot from the KoM sprint, but we have the results nonetheless. Warchol took the maximum points and is now on 103, thus taking the virtual KoM lead from Penasa, who was second and is now on 100 points. Johannessen (54), Kirsch (62), Quintana (13) were the next ones. 11 riders from the break are still together, we’ll see if the others will be able to come back in the descent. The peloton is already 8 minutes behind.
Evans and Warbasse were the only ones not to make it back, but the other 14 begin the climb up the Col de la Madeleine (HC; 19.5 km at 7.8 %) together. The peloton is 6’52 behind.
Half the climb is done and Khodayari and Williams are long dropped and way back. They were also the last ones to make it back before the climb.
Quintana (33) is the first at the KoM sprint, followed by Penasa (114), Warchol (115) and Carapaz (55). The rest of the former group is splattered all over the place, we’ll see who’ll make it back in the long descent. The gap to the peloton is 9’37.
Roman is the only one of the break who doesn’t make it back, so we have 11 riders at the front again.
The break just rolls through the intermediate sprint. The gap to the peloton (69 riders) is 7’30, but with 72 km to go (including two cat. 2 and one cat. 1 climb) there’s still no guarantee for the riders in front to take the win.
Warchol (125) takes the maximum points on the Col de Tamié in front of Penasa (122), Quintana, Giannoutsos and Carapaz. Prado is with them too, but most of the others aren’t far behind and have the chance to come back in the descent.
Kirsch and Schultz briefly made it back but were soon dropped again in the next climb (Col de l’Epine; cat. 2; 6.3 km at 7.4 %). Warchol (135) takes the win once again, this time Penasa (128) only gets 3rd place. The KoM competition seems to be just between those two now. As a side effect of the fight for the KoM points Giannoutsos was dropped.
The five remaining riders are now in the final climb up the Col de la Croix Fry (cat. 1; 11.7 km at 6.9 %). After reaching the top there’s still a long descent of 12 km to the finish. The peloton is down to 28 riders, but no GC contender was dropped so far. The gap is still 5’26. Oh, and Hirt is on the attack once again.
Another attack form the Czech reduces the group of favourites to 11 riders by dropping all the domestiques. Now it’s Sivakov’s term to attack.
The attacks from the group of favourites continue as no one was able to get away yet. But now Phinney and Lecuisinier are on the go. They’re only a minute behind the break with still 4 km to climb.
The two quickly get to the break, but then the pace slows down and the favourites get back together. That’s the moment for Barguil to attack. Penasa, Warchol, Quintana, Phinney and Lecuisinier are the first chasers. Further back Cattaneo was dropped by the other GC riders.
But in the end it’s Lecuisinier who’s first at the KoM sprint. Barguil is still with him, while Phinney, Bernal and Sivakov are the first chasers half a minute behind. Then it’s Pogacar on his own 45’’ behind, followed by the other GC riders 20’’ later.
The two Frenchman still have a gap of 14’’ under the red kite when they launch their sprints.
And it’s Lecuisinier who takes the win once again! Barguil stays in 2nd. Then it’s Bernal and Sivakov who even dropped Phinney in the final km.
Further back it’s Pogacar, Carthy, Hirt and McNulty in 6th to 9th place. Penasa edges out Warchol for the final Top 10 spot. Behind them it’s Quintana and Carapaz.
The time limit is set on 1h19’22. The last riders are already about an hour behind and still have to begin the last climb, so it’s gonna be close for them.
Granigan and Vandevelde are only 100 m away from the line when they reach the time limit. The organizers show no mercy and the race is over for those two. What a shame!
Congratulations to Lecuisinier for his next win! Will he make it three in a row tomorrow?
Warchol takes over the polka dots by a small margin, the other classification leaders stay the same.
