Stage 18

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/top_tdf_18.jpg

The next mountain stage for the peloton today, but it’s probably no big GC fight ahead with only a cat. 1 climb (Col de la Croix Fry) and a following descent to Le Grand Bornan at the end of the stage. But if a rider loses time today it’ll probably be much of it, also meaning the time limit could come into play for some of the worse climbers. Even more so as there are two HC climbs within the first 85 km of the stage (Col du Glandon and Col de la Madeleine). That’s also a good setup for the KoM fight with up to 65 points on offer for the riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0307.jpg

It took till the first climb (Col du Glandon; HC; 21.9 km at 5.2 %) for a break to establish, but finally a group of 16 got away and it includes some familiar names as well as KoM and / or GC contenders. The full list is:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Evans and Schultz
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Carapaz (17th GC; 40 KoM points) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Giannoutsos (15th; 36)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Chamorro (61)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Johannessen (42)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Khodayari (62)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Kirsch (14th; 52)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Penasa (8th; 86)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Pinot (20th; 12)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Prado (22nd)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Quintana (12th)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Roman
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Warbasse
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol (11th; 83)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Williams (32)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0308.jpg

Due to technical difficulties there’s no shot from the KoM sprint, but we have the results nonetheless. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol took the maximum points and is now on 103, thus taking the virtual KoM lead from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Penasa, who was second and is now on 100 points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Johannessen (54), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Kirsch (62), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Quintana (13) were the next ones. 11 riders from the break are still together, we’ll see if the others will be able to come back in the descent. The peloton is already 8 minutes behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Evans and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Warbasse were the only ones not to make it back, but the other 14 begin the climb up the Col de la Madeleine (HC; 19.5 km at 7.8 %) together. The peloton is 6’52 behind.

Half the climb is done and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Khodayari and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Williams are long dropped and way back. They were also the last ones to make it back before the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0311.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Quintana (33) is the first at the KoM sprint, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Penasa (114), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol (115) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Carapaz (55). The rest of the former group is splattered all over the place, we’ll see who’ll make it back in the long descent. The gap to the peloton is 9’37.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0312.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Roman is the only one of the break who doesn’t make it back, so we have 11 riders at the front again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0313.jpg

The break just rolls through the intermediate sprint. The gap to the peloton (69 riders) is 7’30, but with 72 km to go (including two cat. 2 and one cat. 1 climb) there’s still no guarantee for the riders in front to take the win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0314.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol (125) takes the maximum points on the Col de Tamié in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Penasa (122), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Quintana, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Giannoutsos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Carapaz. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Prado is with them too, but most of the others aren’t far behind and have the chance to come back in the descent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0315.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Kirsch and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Schultz briefly made it back but were soon dropped again in the next climb (Col de l’Epine; cat. 2; 6.3 km at 7.4 %). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol (135) takes the win once again, this time pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Penasa (128) only gets 3rd place. The KoM competition seems to be just between those two now. As a side effect of the fight for the KoM points pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Giannoutsos was dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0316.jpg

The five remaining riders are now in the final climb up the Col de la Croix Fry (cat. 1; 11.7 km at 6.9 %). After reaching the top there’s still a long descent of 12 km to the finish. The peloton is down to 28 riders, but no GC contender was dropped so far. The gap is still 5’26. Oh, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Hirt is on the attack once again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0317.jpg

Another attack form the Czech reduces the group of favourites to 11 riders by dropping all the domestiques. Now it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Sivakov’s term to attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0318.jpg

The attacks from the group of favourites continue as no one was able to get away yet. But now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier are on the go. They’re only a minute behind the break with still 4 km to climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0319.jpg

The two quickly get to the break, but then the pace slows down and the favourites get back together. That’s the moment for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Barguil to attack. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Penasa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Quintana, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier are the first chasers. Further back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Cattaneo was dropped by the other GC riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0320.jpg

But in the end it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier who’s first at the KoM sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Barguil is still with him, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Bernal and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Sivakov are the first chasers half a minute behind. Then it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Pogacar on his own 45’’ behind, followed by the other GC riders 20’’ later.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0321.jpg

The two Frenchman still have a gap of 14’’ under the red kite when they launch their sprints.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0322.jpg

And it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier who takes the win once again! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Barguil stays in 2nd. Then it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Bernal and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Sivakov who even dropped pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney in the final km.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0323.jpg

Further back it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Pogacar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Carthy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Hirt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png McNulty in 6th to 9th place. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Penasa edges out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol for the final Top 10 spot. Behind them it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Quintana and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Carapaz.

The time limit is set on 1h19’22. The last riders are already about an hour behind and still have to begin the last climb, so it’s gonna be close for them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0324.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Granigan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Vandevelde are only 100 m away from the line when they reach the time limit. The organizers show no mercy and the race is over for those two. What a shame!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0325.jpg

Congratulations to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier for his next win! Will he make it three in a row tomorrow?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0326.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol takes over the polka dots by a small margin, the other classification leaders stay the same.
