Stage 17
After two hilly stages the next four stages will see the showdown in the GC and the KoM competition. Today’s stage starts in Gap and leads the riders over the Col de Manse once again (this time as a cat. 3 climb). After an interlude of about 70 km the Col d’Ornon (cat. 2) marks the start of the up and down till the finish on the legendary Alpe d’Huez. And the infamous HC climb will be tackled two times today, with a short addition of the Col de Sarenne (cat. 3) after the first climb. With a maximum 62 KoM points on offer every rider could match the current leader Khodayari after the stage, so we’ll see a huge fight for the polka dots in any case.
Spoiler
On a side note there’s quite a bunch of pupils out there who learned what an average rate of change is with the profile of this particular stage.
We have quite a big break today consisting of 19 riders (from 17 teams) with lots of familiar names:
Khodayari and Rodrigues
Kirsch and Rucigaj
Arensman
Bellan
Carapaz
Fernandez
Habtemichael
Hamilton
Hoehn
Kämna
Penasa
Phodingam
Pinot
Rubio
Van Poucke
Warchol
Zimmermann
The result of the first KoM sprint is Warchol (now 51 points) in front of Penasa (58) and Kirsch (42). Another result of this sprint is that Rubio was dropped by the others and didn’t come back. The peloton is nearly 4 minutes behind.
The break just rolls through the intermediate sprint. Their lead is at 3’12 now, but from now on it’s only up and down. It’s hard to tell if this gap is enough for the good climbers in the break to fight for the stage win or if the big guns in the GC want to take the stage as well.
Hamilton takes the 2nd KoM sprint to open his points tally. Penasa takes 2nd place and also the virtual KoM lead with 66 points. Warchol (57), Carapaz (26) and Van Poucke (6) take the remaining points. The peloton is still about 3 minutes behind.
Now the stage really begins with the break reaching the infamous climb to Alpe d’Huez (HC; 12.2 km at 8.6 %). The riders will have to do this climb again at the end of the stage.
With 3 km to climb Bellan and the Binance duo were dropped. This will also mean the end of Khodayaris time in the polka dots after 9 stages. The peloton is already crumbling apart and down to 51 riders, but they’re also just 1’54 behind the front.
Warchol is first up the climb and has now 77 points. Penasa (80), Carapaz (38), Kirsch (52), Habtemichael (8) and Pinot (12) are the only ones who were able to stay with him. Kämna as their first chaser is already a minute behind. But it’s still a bit uphill after this line and only a short descent before the cat. 3 climb up to the Col de Sarenne follows, so his chances to come back are low. The peloton crosses the KoM line about 3 minutes after the front group.
The front six are still together at the next KoM sprint. Penasa (86) takes this one with Warchol (81) and Carapaz (40) taking the remaining points. The gap to the peloton with all the other GC riders is still around 3 minutes. Now the riders have a long descent of 20 km and a short flat part to recover before the final climb.
Rodrigues (12th in the GC) pays for his efforts in the break and loses contact to the group of favourites in the descent!
Alpe d’Huez, part 2. The final of the stage begins with the group of six still 2’50 in front of the peloton. Depending on how much the six have left and when the GC fight starts behind them it’s still possible the stage winner is already in front.
Bad news for the break as Hirt once again attacks at the bottom of the final climb. He’s followed by Bernal and Carthy and though it doesn’t seem like they’ll get away it surely reduces the gap to the front.
With 4.6 km to climb the front six got some company as Carthy and Barguil have joined them after they attacked separately. Those eight have a minute to the first chasers.
But this minute probably isn’t enough as the first chasers are Lecuisinier and Phinney! They’re on the attack and the other GC riders let them battle it out for themselves and focus on their own duels instead.
The two big guns slowed down a bit before they attacked again and now have reached the first dropped riders of the break ( Carapaz, Penasa and Habtemichael). Pinot is even further behind already, while it seems like Warchol and Kirsch will be dropped soon, too.
With 2 km to go Barguil is alone at the front, Lecuisinier, Phinney and Carthy are 27’’ behind. The rest of the GC Top 10 and the former break are another 17’’ behind, but this group already seems to crumble apart. Cattaneo is even further behind.
Under the red kite the first three are together, but Barguil still seems to have some reserves – in contrast to the other two. Half a minute behind are Bernal, Sivakov and Pogacar.
But in the end it’s Lecuisinier once again to take the win – and he even dropped his two companions!
Bernal takes 2nd place and even gets a small gap. Barguil edges out Pogacar and Phinney for 3rd, with Sivakov finishing with them in 6th place.
Carthy and Hirt come in 7th and 8th place. McNulty leads the next group, where Warchol edges out Quintana for 10th place. Kirsch is with them too. Carapaz, Penasa and Habtemichael are the next group and complete the Top 15.
Lecuisinier takes another victory in the maillot jaune and adds the iconic win in Alpe d’Huez to his palmarès. And maybe even more importantly he extended his lead in the GC to 1’43.
Penasa takes over the lead in the KoM competition with a lead of only 3 points, but pays for it with falling to 8th in the GC. The other classification leaders stay the same though.
