Stage 17

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/top_tdf_17.jpg

After two hilly stages the next four stages will see the showdown in the GC and the KoM competition. Today’s stage starts in Gap and leads the riders over the Col de Manse once again (this time as a cat. 3 climb). After an interlude of about 70 km the Col d’Ornon (cat. 2) marks the start of the up and down till the finish on the legendary Alpe d’Huez. And the infamous HC climb will be tackled two times today, with a short addition of the Col de Sarenne (cat. 3) after the first climb. With a maximum 62 KoM points on offer every rider could match the current leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Khodayari after the stage, so we’ll see a huge fight for the polka dots in any case.

Spoiler
On a side note there’s quite a bunch of pupils out there who learned what an average rate of change is with the profile of this particular stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0285.jpg

We have quite a big break today consisting of 19 riders (from 17 teams) with lots of familiar names:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Khodayari and Rodrigues
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Kirsch and Rucigaj
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Arensman
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Bellan
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Carapaz
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Fernandez
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Habtemichael
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Hamilton
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Hoehn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Kämna
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Penasa
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Phodingam
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Pinot
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Rubio
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Van Poucke
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Zimmermann

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0286.jpg

The result of the first KoM sprint is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol (now 51 points) in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Penasa (58) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Kirsch (42). Another result of this sprint is that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Rubio was dropped by the others and didn’t come back. The peloton is nearly 4 minutes behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0287.jpg

The break just rolls through the intermediate sprint. Their lead is at 3’12 now, but from now on it’s only up and down. It’s hard to tell if this gap is enough for the good climbers in the break to fight for the stage win or if the big guns in the GC want to take the stage as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0288.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Hamilton takes the 2nd KoM sprint to open his points tally. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Penasa takes 2nd place and also the virtual KoM lead with 66 points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol (57), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Carapaz (26) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Van Poucke (6) take the remaining points. The peloton is still about 3 minutes behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0289.jpg

Now the stage really begins with the break reaching the infamous climb to Alpe d’Huez (HC; 12.2 km at 8.6 %). The riders will have to do this climb again at the end of the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0290.jpg

With 3 km to climb pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Bellan and the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Binance duo were dropped. This will also mean the end of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Khodayaris time in the polka dots after 9 stages. The peloton is already crumbling apart and down to 51 riders, but they’re also just 1’54 behind the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0291.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol is first up the climb and has now 77 points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Penasa (80), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Carapaz (38), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Kirsch (52), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Habtemichael (8) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Pinot (12) are the only ones who were able to stay with him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Kämna as their first chaser is already a minute behind. But it’s still a bit uphill after this line and only a short descent before the cat. 3 climb up to the Col de Sarenne follows, so his chances to come back are low. The peloton crosses the KoM line about 3 minutes after the front group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0292.jpg

The front six are still together at the next KoM sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Penasa (86) takes this one with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol (81) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Carapaz (40) taking the remaining points. The gap to the peloton with all the other GC riders is still around 3 minutes. Now the riders have a long descent of 20 km and a short flat part to recover before the final climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0293.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues (12th in the GC) pays for his efforts in the break and loses contact to the group of favourites in the descent!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0294.jpg

Alpe d’Huez, part 2. The final of the stage begins with the group of six still 2’50 in front of the peloton. Depending on how much the six have left and when the GC fight starts behind them it’s still possible the stage winner is already in front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0295.jpg

Bad news for the break as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Hirt once again attacks at the bottom of the final climb. He’s followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Bernal and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Carthy and though it doesn’t seem like they’ll get away it surely reduces the gap to the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0296.jpg

With 4.6 km to climb the front six got some company as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Carthy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Barguil have joined them after they attacked separately. Those eight have a minute to the first chasers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0297.jpg

But this minute probably isn’t enough as the first chasers are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney! They’re on the attack and the other GC riders let them battle it out for themselves and focus on their own duels instead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0298.jpg

The two big guns slowed down a bit before they attacked again and now have reached the first dropped riders of the break (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Carapaz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Penasa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Habtemichael). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Pinot is even further behind already, while it seems like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Kirsch will be dropped soon, too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0299.jpg

With 2 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Barguil is alone at the front, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Carthy are 27’’ behind. The rest of the GC Top 10 and the former break are another 17’’ behind, but this group already seems to crumble apart. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Cattaneo is even further behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0300.jpg

Under the red kite the first three are together, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Barguil still seems to have some reserves – in contrast to the other two. Half a minute behind are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Bernal, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Sivakov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Pogacar.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0301.jpg

But in the end it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier once again to take the win – and he even dropped his two companions!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0302.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Bernal takes 2nd place and even gets a small gap. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Barguil edges out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Pogacar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney for 3rd, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Sivakov finishing with them in 6th place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0303.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Carthy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Hirt come in 7th and 8th place. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png McNulty leads the next group, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol edges out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Quintana for 10th place. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Kirsch is with them too. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Carapaz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Penasa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Habtemichael are the next group and complete the Top 15.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0304.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier takes another victory in the maillot jaune and adds the iconic win in Alpe d’Huez to his palmarès. And maybe even more importantly he extended his lead in the GC to 1’43.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0305.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Penasa takes over the lead in the KoM competition with a lead of only 3 points, but pays for it with falling to 8th in the GC. The other classification leaders stay the same though.
