Stage 4 Report

Today the riders face 193k around Ronse. It is the turn of the cobblers to come out and play, a lot of them have already lost big time so maybe some of them will join the break, if they need further motivation, they can look at last year and see this stage was won by the break. Two sprints but no KOM points.

The cobblers dominate the favorites list.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/favs.jpg

10k gone and 7 riders at the front, some strong riders but not of the really big names. In the group are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Colombo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Muhindo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Pellaud, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Moulingui, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png John, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Manamalage, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Predatsch. Two more riders (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lpu.png Piccolo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Kolev) are 59 seconds behind and then 4 more are trying to escape the peloton which is at 1’55.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/01.jpg

150k to go. Piccolo and Kolev were able to join the front 7 but no more escapees were allowed. A very international break today with 8 different nationalities represented, only Switzerland is able to double up. The gap is now 4’33 with Xero and Bralirwa on the front of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/02.jpg

The break roll through the sprint point without contesting it. Pellaud is closest on GC at 4’44. Pellaud, John, Piccolo and Predatsch were all briefly dropped when the group passed the first cobbled section a little while back. Not a good omen for them. Peloton at 5’25.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/03.jpg

100k to go for the peloton, the break’s lead is 4’13. Los Pollos (Pira), Bralirwa(Willems) and Fastned (Fisher-Black) doing the work. Another 25k to go before things get interesting. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Sossa punctured a while ago and hasn’t been able to rejoin, looks like a long day for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/04.jpg

75k to go and the break are on the Kanarieberg (1.2k at 7.5%), this marks the beginning of the first hard section of the race. They lead by 3’05, same teams working behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/05.jpg

60k to go, the break on the Oude Kwaremont, 1.2k at 5.9% and level 3 cobbles. This climb marks the end of that harder section. The break has held their own and still lead by 3’05. Once they complete the climb, they will have about 20k of easy roads before the 2nd hard section of the race begins.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/06.jpg

By the sprint point at the top of the Oude Kwaremont the earlier foreshadowing has proved accurate, Pellaud, John, Piccolo and Predatsch aren’t strong enough to stay with the other five. Peloton at 3 minutes, race leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Pidcock has come to the front as they approach the Kwaremont.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/07.jpg

Pidcock’s forcing causes some chaos over the top of the climb but it looks like it will all come back together. The same is not true for the break, the four dropped riders are already over 1’30 down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/08.jpg

Maybe it won’t come back together so easily. Fastned left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Van Hooydonck isolated yesterday but seem determined to make up for it today as they and Bralirwa force the pace. Los Pollos were also involved until they dropped back when they realized that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Zepuntke was too far back. On the front right now are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Habimana, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Renard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Robeet, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Bovenhuis. Breakaway is 2’47 ahead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/09.jpg

41k to go the leaders are on Mont Saint-Laurent (1.1k at 8.3%, 3 star cobbles). This marks the beginning of the second hard section. The riders face a pretty stead diet of climbs plus cobbles until the road flattens out with about 12k to go. The 49-rider peloton is 2’16 down, the other four from the original break have all been caught. In the peloton 2nd placed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Novardianto and 3rd placed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Bohli have both been dropped. Tht leaves Pidcock with only Hamza with him in the front group while UBS still have plenty of riders around their other GC man pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Van Asbroeck. Also dropped from the top 10 on GC are 9th placed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Hänninen and 10th placed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Dunne, although the latter is close to rejoining.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/10.jpg

By the top of Mont Saint-Laurent pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Spengler has pried open a gap of 24 seconds just by riding harder than everyone else. The peloton swelled in numbers on the climb but will likely break apart again over the top. The break still 2 minutes ahead, Manamalage barely hung on during the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/11.jpg

Spengler in no-man’s land as he tackles the Mont D’ellezelles (1.2k at 5.5%) with 33k to go. He is still 1’12 down on the break but only 23 seconds ahead of the peloton. The peloton back to 65 riders will all the top 10 on GC present except Hänninen. Los Pollos and Fastned leading the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/12.jpg

Over the top pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Blythe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lpu.png Gamper, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Lampaert set off after Spengler.

Those 3 quickly catch Spengler and Gamper goes by and rides up to the break. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Ulloa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Duric leading the peloton but neither of them has much left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/13.jpg

22k to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Kolev is dropped from the break. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Bovenhuis leading the peloton but the gap is growing. The race situation looks like this:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/std1.jpg

None of the riders out front are a threat on the GC.

Fresh impetus comes from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Okbamariam and Lampre swarm to the front to help resulting in all the in-between riders being caught leaving just 5 rider out front with a 45 second lead and 18.5k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/14.jpg

The leaders (Moulingi, Colombo, Muhindo, Gamper and Manamalage) start the Oude Kwaremont for the second and final time with a 56-second lead. This is the last obstacle before the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Stallaert goes on the attack on the Kwaremont and all of the break except Gamper are quickly caught. Behind Stallaert are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Zepuntke, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Van Hooydonck

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/16.jpg

Spengler tries to go with them but can’t and those three quickly catch and drop Gamper. With 10k to go they have 45 seconds on a 54-rider peloton where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Van Zyl is chasing. Stallaert started the day with a 1-minute deficit on GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/17.jpg

5k to go. The three leaders have 40 seconds. Gamper has been caught. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Novardianto chasing now. The top 15 on GC are all in the 50-rider chase group except the aforementioned pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Hänninen and 11th placed. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Bertilsson.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/18.jpg

2k for the leaders, Stallaert has launched an attack, Xero unable to close the gap which is still 45 seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png De Bondt helping with the chase now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/19.jpg

Under the 1k banner. The sprint is launched. Stallaert by far the best sprinter in the trio which is good for him as he will want the maximum time bonuses to threaten the GC lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/20.jpg

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Van Hooydonck gets the best jump and still has an edge with 200 meters to go. Pidcock leading the charge to close the gap behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Van Hooydonck celebrates the stage win. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Stallaert used a lot of energy keeping the gap open and settles for second. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Zepuntke takes 3rd. Now the question is what gap will be given.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Pidcock easily takes 4th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Rowe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Ringheim.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Daniel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Riesebeek and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Shiki Kuroeda give Lampre 3 in the top 10 and Sony 2.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Benelux/S4/24.jpg

The first 3 end up with a 26 second gap, only enough to move Stallaert up to 6th on GC. But another cobbled stage tomorrow. A split in the chase group in the final kilometers catches out Novardianto (who had done a lot of work) and Dunne. As a result UBS holds 2nd and 3rd on GC with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Bohli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Van Asbroeck

Pidcock still leads points ahead of Stallaert and the young rider competition ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Mick Van Dijke. Lampre keep the team jersey.
