Stage 15
For the start of the third week the riders will have two hilly stages to tackle, it would be two typical transfer stages weren’t it that it’s more of a digression within the days in the Alps. Today the peloton starts its day in Saint Pourcain sur Sioule pretty much in the center of France and then heads eastwards to Lyon. The profile isn’t too hard with only one cat. 3 and two cat. 4 KoM sprints underway, but with two smaller hills right before the finish it could be too hard for most of the sprinters, so there’s a good chance for the break today. Add a really close KoM classification so far and you have another reason for joining the break. In case the break doesn’t make it the man in green Yates should be the man to beat once more.
And after the first attacks all pre-race considerations regarding the KoM competition are already obsolete as none of the Top 30 riders in that classification was able to join the break. 10 km into the stage a group of four is at the front of the race, consisting of Harper, Hulgaard, Pinot and Roman, with Kiflay, Mansouri and Phodingam in the hunt.
The seven quickly come together and get a gap of up to 4’30.
The break just rolls through the intermediate sprint. They’re gap is 3’12 with nearly 100 km to go.
The first cat. 4 KoM sprint is more contested with Harper getting the maximum points in front of Roman and Pinot. None of them had any points previously.
Phodingam takes the cat. 3 sprint to add to his 3 points. Roman and Harper are the runner-ups.
The result of the last KoM sprint is Pinot in front of Phodingam and Roman. Kiflay was dropped after the last KoM sprint and is nearly back in the peloton which is 2’55 behind the front. It’s still 60 km to go.
20 km later the gap is down to 1’57, but the chase led to a first split in the peloton. It didn’t last, but the pack is pretty stretched and some riders will have to get to the front soon to not get caught on the wrong side of another split.
With 19 km to go the gap is the still the same, though it was already down to a minute earlier resulting in the escapees attacking each other. Now the peloton has eased off. We’ll see if that’s a good idea.
With 10 km to go the break starts the penultimate small climb and still has a lead of 1’29. The pack will have to get their pace up to still bring them back.
The pack obviously has given up the chase as the gap is up to 2’40 when the six at the front tackle the last hill. It’s 1.7 km uphill and 1.3 km downhill to the finish from now on. Roman has the best combination of punch and descending skills out of the break, so he’ll probably be the man to beat.
No attacks from the break in the climb, so Hulgaard leads them over the top. Mansouri as the best sprinter sits in second position.
Further back Madouas attacked from the peloton, resulting in a group of 19 getting a gap. This group consists mostly of sprinters and puncheurs with no GC contender in it.
Under the red kite all of the breakaway riders have launched their sprint. With the road constantly descending to the finish line fading probably won’t be a major problem. Hulgaard and Mansouri are essentially on par with the latter seeming to be the faster of the two.
Mansouri is faster indeed and takes the win! Hulgaard comes in 2nd while Harper edges out Phodingam for 3rd place. Roman and Pinot finish 5th and 6th.
Further back Gaudu wins the sprint of the peloton after an attack over the top of the hill. Yates, Paulinho and Grosu complete the Top 10.
Congratulations to Mansouri for a surprise stage win! There have been no changes at the top of the classifications.
