Stage 14
After yesterday’s stage went to the break and only minor time gaps were created by the GC riders today will see more GC action as we have a stage perfectly designed to end week 2 with a big showdown of the race favourites. Starting in Albertville, the host city of the Winter Olympics 1992, the riders have a bit more than 15 km (and the intermediate sprint) to get warm before the rest of the 144 km are only up- and downhill. And some riders will have to fight for staying in the time limit as the climbing starts with the two legendary HC climbs Col de la Madeleine and Col de la Croix de Fer – which also means the break will be mandatory for anyone who’s fighting for the polka dots. After the cat. 2 Col du Mollard the final climb leads up to La Toussuire – Les Sybelles (cat. 1). Whoever of the GC guys shows weaknesses today will probably lose minutes – and not just 1 or 2 of them.
The attacks began right from the start and at the moment we have 22 riders in front of the peloton, including some GC outsiders with Giannoutsos (8th), Penasa (12th), Carthy (14th), Warchol (15th), Kämna (17th), Carapaz (18th), Sicard (19th) and Gregaard (22nd). Interestingly the Greek is the only one of the KoM top 10 to be in the break. We’ll have a more detailed breakdown when the riders are some way up the Col de la Madeleine (HC; 26.1 km at 6.1 %) and the situation will probably have settled a bit.
With 7.7 km to climb a group of eight remains at the front, consisting of Kämna and Gregaard, Carthy, Penasa, Warchol, Carapaz, Kirsch and Johannessen. The Norwegian is also the only one of this group with a noteworthy amount of KoM points yet.
Out of the GC riders mentioned earlier Sicard is 32’’ behind at the moment, while Giannoutsos already has a gap of 2’06. The peloton is about 6 minutes behind the front.
With 1 km to climb and the summit in sight the Carlsberg duo as well as Johannessen have lost contact and are already more than a minute and a half behind. The peloton has a gap of 7’30 to the front. We’ll see if the five at the front will fight for the KoM points or are just here for the stage and winning time for the GC.
They fight indeed and Penasa takes the 20 points at the top in front of Kirsch and Carapaz who is a bit behind the others. Warchol and Carthy are even further back. Those five will probably come together in the descent anyway.
The five are indeed back together when they start the climb up the Col de la Croix de Fer (HC; 23.3 km at 6.9 %). Giannoutsos is already 5 minute behind and nearly back in the peloton which is 6’20 behind the front.
This time it’s Carthy who takes the 20 points with Penasa, Kirsch and Warchol following. Carapaz lost contact about 3 km before the summit and is now about a minute behind the other four. That’s probably too much to make it back in the descent.
The peloton reaches the summit 8’13 after the four at the front and is down to 51 riders.
Carapaz didn’t make it back, so the front is down to four riders when climbing up the Col du Mollard (cat. 2; 5.9 km at 6.7 %).
Carthy wins the KoM sprint again and has now 44 points. Behind him it’s Warchol (37), Kirsch (30) and Penasa (42). None of them will be able to take the polka dots today though. But with a lead of 6’42 to the peloton they will fight for the stage win and a reasonable gap to gain some GC positions. The Brit and the Italian are even close to the virtual maillot jaune right now.
The four begin the final climb to La Toussuire (cat. 1; 18.4 km at 6.0 %) with a lead of about 4 minutes to Carapaz and a gap of 6’24 to the remaining peloton of 35 riders. None of the Top 15 in the GC are dropped yet, though Kämna and Sicard paid the price for their breakaway effort by being dropped already.
Carthy was the first in the break to attack, but in the end it’s Penasa and Warchol who get the first gap.
Further back it’s once again Hirt who’s trying to get away first.
Both attacks were brought back, but Penasa is the only one not able to follow Carthy’s next attack.
Meanwhile Barguil and once again Hirt attack from the group of favourites where Carapaz is reeled in and immediately reached through.
With 5 km to the finish the front four were back together for a short period but then it’s Carthy’s turn to get dropped.
3’43 behind are Barguil and Hirt who were able to get away from the group of favourites and have already produced a gap of 3 minutes.
The front four are once again back together. But now it’s time for Lecuisinier and Phinney to attack! As a result Giannoutsos is dropped from the group of favourites.
Under the red kite Carthy, Warchol and Kirsch are still together and Penasa is only 12’’ behind. Another 1’13 behind is Barguil, followed by Hirt with a 35’’ gap.
Another 1’12 behind (3’12 behind the front) Lecuisinier is trying to shake off Phinney, Bernal, Sivakov and Cattaneo.
Even further back are Rodrigues, McNulty, Pogacar, Quintana and Pinot.
In the end it’s Carthy who gets the stage win! Penasa came back once again to finish 2nd, Warchol gets 3rd and Kirsch 4th place.
The time limit is set on 1h04’41 and Vlatos is already near that mark while still descending from the Col du Mollard. Carsi and Vanbilsen will also have a hard time to make it in time with some others also in danger.
Barguil finishes in 5th while Lecuisinier even gets past Hirt who finishes 7th – but even more importantly he gets a small gap to Phinney in 8th and an even bigger gap at Sivakov and Bernal in 9th and 10th place.
From there on everyone’s getting to the finish one by one with gaps ranging from 15’’ to 30’’. Pogacar finishes 11th and gains some precious seconds on McNulty in 12th place. Then it’s Rodrigues, Quintana and Cattaneo who complete the top 15.
Congratulations to Carthy for an impressive stage win! He also climbs up to 6th place in the GC. There have been no changes at the top of any classification, but the three riders mentioned earlier missed the time limit in the end, thus reducing the peloton to 189 riders.
