Stage 13
After the ITT yesterday the GC fight will continue today in the first of two mountain stages to end the second week. Starting in Mâcon the riders will have to climb two cat. 2 climbs as well as the HC rated Col du Grand Colombier. But with the summit of this climb already 40 km from the finish and only a cat. 2 climb (plus its descent) following it should be a day for the break to fight for the stage win in Bellegarde-sur-Valserine.
There’s big interest in today’s break and Evonik seems quite content with letting everyone go who’s willing to, so we end with a group of 15:
Preidler and Van Poucke
Bouchard and Buitrago
Bellan
Fernandez
Giannoutsos
Leknessund
Nesset
Parra Bustamente
Quita
Slagter
Sweeny
Vine
Williams
There are some quite good climbers and / or breakaway specialists in this group, but we’ll see how much of a gap the group will get with Giannoutsos being 14th in the GC and less than 7 minutes behind.
No fight for the intermediate sprint as the break just rolls through. They have a lead of 3’12.
The gap is pretty much the same when the break starts the first categorized climb of the day (Cote de Corlier; cat. 2; 10.7 km at 4.3 %). We’ll see who’ll fight for the points in the break as none of the riders has already left a bigger mark in this competition.
The result of the sprint is Williams, Nesset, Giannoutsos, Slagter and Parra Bustamente. The lead is up to 3’27 now.
The break is already in the biggest climb today (Col du Grand Colombier; HC; 18.3 km at 6.9 %). Their lead is down to 1’55, but if the GC riders decide not to attack today a courageous ride from the break could still make for a stage win.
Sweeny is the first rider in the break to get dropped. Further back it’s not looking good for Gazelle as Warchol as well as Senni (15th and 16th in the GC) have already fallen back from the peloton.
The next riders to get dropped from the front of the race are Vine, Buitrago, Bellan, Slagter, Quita and Fernandez (in that order). With 3.2 km to the top of the climb the remaining 8 riders have a gap of 1’32 to a peloton of 57 riders.
Giannoutsos, Bouchard and Nesset are the first three to reach the summit, with Preidler, Williams and Parra Bustamente half a minute behind. Those 3 will maybe make it back to the front. The peloton is 2 minutes behind.
The second group made it back just in time to start the final climb together (Col de Richemond; cat.2 ; 11.0 km at 3.8 %). Their lead is down to 1’21 and the top of the climb is not the finish yet as the final 17 km are mostly downhill.
At the top of the climb it’s the same three riders to stay in front, though Bouchard and Nesset changed places. The peloton is 1’33 behind with the other 3 former breakaway riders in between.
With 5.6 km to go it’s clear the three riders in the front will make it to the finish. It’ll be a close sprint as all three are equally worse sprinters.
Further back the GC guys don’t seem to be content with just cruising to the line as Hirt, Barguil and Rodrigues attacked in the descent. About half a minute behind them another group consisting of Lecuisinier, Phinney, Bernal, Carthy and Cattaneo has a small gap to the rest of the peloton, too.
Up front all three escapees start their sprint with 1.2 km to go.
And in the end it’s Nesset who takes the win over Giannoutsos by a small margin. Bouchard gets the last podium spot.
Further back Barguil gets a small gap to finish 4th. Rodrigues and Hirt take 5th and 6th place. Lecuisinier leads the next group over the line where Phinney, Bernal and Williams complete the top 10. We’ll see if the jury will award those gaps too.
Congratulations to Nesset for a great stage win! There’s been only one change on top of a classification as Cedevita is now leading the team classification. But there have been some smaller gaps between the GC guys, though it’s mostly concerning the lower Top 10 places.
