Stage 12

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/top_tdf_12.jpg

After yesterday’s day off for the GC riders they’ll be all on their own today – quite literally as it’s the first of two long ITTs in this year’s Tour. Starting in Arc-et-Senans the stage is 38 km long and mostly flat with only some smaller bumps until the riders reach the finish line in Besancon. The distance and profile are hence favoring the TT specialist, so some climbers will hope to not lose too much time today to keep their GC chances intact, especially with another, even longer, ITT waiting for them later in the race. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney should be the top favourite for the stage as he’s a bit above any other TTist in this Tour, even the more as he needs to win back some time on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier after the Pyrenées.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0189.jpg

With pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Vlatos on of the best TTists is also the first rider on the road, so we’ll have some pretty significant times at the splits and at the finish right from the start. He finishes in 45’07.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0190.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Tanfield is the first rider who is able to compete with the times of the Greek at the splits. He misses the hot seat by 12’’ in the end. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Razumov gets even closer with a gap of 6’’, but escapes the cameras while doing so.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0191.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Bjerg is the next of the favourites and stays close over the course. He finishes in 45’06 and takes the provisional lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0192.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Zakarin is already the last of the pure TTers with a shot at the win. He finishes in provisional 5th place, nearly half a minute down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0193.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Munton sets a new best time at the second split (we’ll ignore the first split as there are many riders starting the stage very fast and fading in the end even faster). He loses some time though and is 8’’ down at the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0194.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Mano is even faster at the second split and he manages to stay in front. His new best time at the finish is 45’03.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0195.jpg

It’s not much happening from there on, so we’re not back until the Top 15 of the GC are on the road. So here’s the provisional ranking before those arrive.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0197.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Giannoutsos is the first of them, he finishes 1’52 behind the best time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0196.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Cattaneo is the next in line, he finishes a provisional 8th place with a gap of 30’’.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0198.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Hirt loses about a minute more.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0199.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Quintana loses even more time, he’s 2’19 down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0200.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Penasa is a second faster than the Columbian.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0201.jpg

The GC Top 10 start with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues, who does okay by losing 1’21 to the leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0202.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png McNulty is even better, but he doesn’t get near the lead too. His gap is 41’’.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0203.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol sets the worst time of the GC guys yet. He loses more than 3 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0204.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Pogacar overtook the Polish who started in front of him and has a gap of 53’’.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0205.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Carthy is another one of the weaker TTers among the GC riders, as can be seen by his gap of 3’05. He’ll lose some positions as a result.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0206.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Barguil is 2’15 back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0207.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Sivakov does really well and is only 49’’ behind the lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0208.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Bernal is the first of the big 3 to arrive at the finish. He’s even better than the Russian and sets the 7th best time at the finish, only 21’’ behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0209.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney set a new best time at the second split with a lead of more than 20’’. It’s no surprise he also gets the best time at the finish with 44’28 and most probably the stage win. But will it even be enough to get the yellow jersey? He was 1’18 down there before the start.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0210.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier is 25’’ behind the American at the time split. But how much will he lose till the end?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0211.jpg

He loses 44’’ and gets 5th in the stage. But it’s enough to stay in yellow and there will be some action in the mountains starting tomorrow already.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0212.jpg

Congratulations to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney for a favourite’s win of the stage! There have been no changes in the classification leads.
