Stage 11
After three days in the Pyrenées the peloton heads back northeastwards to get to the Alps in the end. Today they will only make it to Montpellier though in a stage that is pan flat, there’s not even a bump high enough to award a cat. 4 climb. Accordingly the favourites for today are the sprinters once again.
Ariesen was the first to attack today, but it took some tries until the break of the day was established. 40 km into the stage there’s finally a group of 5 that the peloton is content with. The Aker rider is joined by Antonijevic, Arensman, Geniets and Quita.
We’re already halfway through the stage and there’s not much happening. The gap went up to a maximum of 4 minutes, but is back down to 3’23. It’s still about 40 km to the intermediate sprint and not much hope it’ll get much more interesting till there.
About an hour of racing later the break doesn’t even fight for the points. That’s totally understandable of course, but also means we’ll probably have to wait another 40 km for some action when the preparations for the sprint start.
As there’s not much happening at the front we have the time to have a look at the loneliest rider today. Fortunato punctured earlier with a long way to go and wasn’t able to get back to the pack, resulting in a 90 km ITT for him today. At least the crowd is still there to cheer for him.
Our earlier prediction was pretty accurate as the break is brought back with 13 km to go, about 42 km after the intermediate sprint. May the sprint preparations begin!
With 5 km to go it’s once again Rabobank who try it with a train. The final is slightly downhill, maybe that will improve their chances.
Van der Kooij takes over his leadout duties with only 1.9 km to go. It seems like the Dutch might get their timing right today. Most of the other sprinters are lined up behind them, only Rajovic seems to be too far behind to get into the mix today. And Farantakis doesn’t seem interested in today’s sprint at all as he’s at around 60th position.
Grosu launches his sprint with 1.2 km to go. Behind him are Samolenkov, Lander and Philipsen.
With 400 m to go Lander seems to be the fastest.
But the Dane fades too early and is overtaken by Kennaugh with 100 m to the line. Hsu is also still in the mix, but the fastest at the moment seems to be Kiskonen. Will there be enough time to get past the others?
There isn’t! Kennaugh takes the win by a tires width in front of the Estonian. Cerny came from far behind to take 3rd place and add another great stage result. Hsu, Kalaba and Lander finish 4th to 6th. Contreras, Trondsen, Jakobsen and Yates complete the Top 10.
Further back there have been some smaller splits in the final, but as all the GC guys were in the same group anyway it won’t matter if there are time gaps awarded or not.
Congratulations to Kennaugh for the stage win. No changes in any classifications today, but tomorrow could see some changes in the GC as we’ll see the first of two long ITTs.
