Stage 10
The third day in the Pyrenées and it’s already the last stage here. Starting in Saint-Gaudens the riders have quite some climbing to do today, as the organizers have packed two cat. 2, two cat. 1 and one cat. 3 climb into the stage even before the final HC climb to the Plateau de Beille – and all that on less than 160 km. No good news for most of the sprinters (and quite some other riders), but good news for us as we’ll have plenty of KoM action on the road with a bunch of riders pretty close together. And we’ll see the next GC showdown. Will Lecuisinier be able to defend or even increase his 1’’ lead over Phinney? Or will the American find a way to get into the maillot jaune?
The start of the stage was a bit hectic, but it didn’t take too long for the group of the day to be established after Evonik decided 11 riders are enough. Those in front are Chamorro and Quita, Bellan, Petrovski, Velasco, Buitrago, Rubio, Sendeku, Ries, Hoehn (14 KoM points) and Sunderland (54). With 58 KoM points on offer before the final climb and a total of 63 points needed to take the lead it’s clear what the Amaysim rider is aiming for today.
But the Australian doesn’t get any points at the first KoM sprint (cat. 2). Chamorro, Ries, Buitrago, Sendeku and Quita take the points instead. As a result of the sprint Bellan loses contact to the other 10. He’s still 52’’ behind at the intermediate sprint which went uncontested, with the peloton another 3’54 behind.
The Slovakian never made it back, but the break further crumbles apart in the next climb Col de la Core (cat. 1; 13.8 km at 5.7 %). Ries, Chamorro and Sendeku seem to be the strongest. They’re about 7’40 in front of the peloton.
Chamorro is the first at the summit after also dropping the other two. Behind him the former break is quite distributed, we’ll see how many of them will be back together after the downhill.
Rubio, Velasco and Sunderland are the only ones not able to get back to the others until the next climb. They’re about a minute behind their former companions and 5’50 in front of the pack.
Chamorro also wins the next cat. 2 KoM. He once again dropped most of the others in the process. There’s another short decent before the next cat. 1 climb, but even if the others come back it’s doubtful that’s of any use to them as the Columbian seems to be clearly the strongest rider in the break.
Chamorro still alone when he reaches the foot of the Col d’Agnès (cat. 1; 10.6 km at 7.7 %). The rest of the break is scattered all over the place. The peloton is still 5’20 behind the leader.
And Chamorro is flying up the climb, resulting in a lead of over 4 minutes to the next chaser when reaching the summit. The peloton reaches the summit about 6 minutes after the Columbian, catching the rest of the break one by one. The KoM points aren’t competed for.
Chamorro makes it 5 out of 5 at the penultimate KoM sprint. It’s still 5’30 for the peloton. With the next 35 km essentially descending there’s a real chance he even takes the stage (and thus the polka dots) today.
Not much happening in the descent apart from the peloton reeling in anyone apart from Chamorro. The Columbian has a lead of 4 minutes when he starts his way up to the Plateau de Beille (HC; 15.6 km at 7.6 %).
Bad news for the leaders, but good news for the neutral spectator: Hirt is once again the first of the GC riders to attack with 14 km still to go – and he’s followed by Phinney!
And with 10 km to go Chamorro is caught and the big guns are back together. It’s all prepared for the GC action to begin.
With 8.5 km to go it’s Barguils turn to attack, he’s followed by Phinney, Hirt and Penasa.
And this attack could lead to something as Lecuisinier sees the necessity to finally react!
When he makes it to the others he attacks them himself. Phinney and Barguil are the only ones seeming strong enough to maybe follow him. Hirt and Penasa lose contact, but still have half a minute to all the other GC riders including Bernal.
And Lecuisinier gets serious! With 1.5 km to go he has 42’’to Bernal (who dropped the others) and Phinney, but the American looks already spent. This move could even be decisive for the GC! Behind those two are Barguil, Carthy, Sivakov and Pogacar.
Lecuisinier takes the win and more than a minute to his biggest rivals in the GC. Phinney and Bernal take 2nd and 3rd, but Sivakov joined them in a final effort.
Barguil and Carthy as well as Warchol and Pogacar cross the line in pairs. McNulty and Rodrigues complete the Top 10. Quintana, Penasa, Cattaneo, Hirt and Giannoutsos are the other GC riders to complete the Top 15.
Congratulations to Lecuisinier for the stage win and increasing his GC lead! No changes at the top of all classifications, but Chamorro climbs up to 2nd in the KoM ranking, only 4 points behind the lead.
