Stage 9

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/top_tdf_09.jpg

After yesterday’s first outing of the GC riders we have another mountain stage today. But the profile doesn’t seem to be of a kind that allows for real GC action with the sole real obstacle placed rather mid-stage. Add a real hard mountain stage tomorrow and it’s more than likely today will be the first stage for the stage hunters in this year’s edition. But now let’s have a closer look at the route. The peloton starts in Pau, a city that’s among the most visited in the history of the Tour. The first 85 km go slightly uphill and the organizers even managed to find two KoM sprints (cat. 3 and 4) there before the main obstacle of the day is tackled. The HC climb Col d’Aubisque is equally well-known to the conaisseur as Pau. But with 45 km still to go after reaching the top and with only a slightly hilly profile after a long downhill it won’t be decisive enough to gain time in the GC (bearing for some legendary attacks). So we’ll likely see a mix of good climbers, KoM candidates and maybe even puncheurs trying to get into the break to be the first in Lourdes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0136.jpg

It took some kilometers but finally a group of 8 riders got away to form the break of the day. The lucky 8 are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Tanfield, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Hulgaard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Kortsidakis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Johannessen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Herregodts, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Ariesen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Wohler and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Hoehn. The McCormick rider is the only one who already has scored KoM points yet – but just 2.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0137.jpg

The group has a gap of about 3 minutes when they arrive at the first KoM sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Herregodts was a bit late there and took the lead just behind the line, so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Johannessen takes the 6 points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Ariesen gets 3rd place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0138.jpg

The young Norwegian also takes the second KoM sprint, this time in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Ariesen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Kortsidakis. The lead is down to 2’20.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0139.jpg

The intermediate sprint at the foot of the Col d’Aubisque isn’t contested. The lead of the group is still about 2 minutes, but there was some up and down of the gap till now so we’ll see if the stronger climbers in the group will be able to get further away in the climb itself (HC; 5.6 km at 7.4 %). It probably won’t take long for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Johannessen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Herregodts and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Hoehn to let the other 5 behind, as those are mainly bigger and heavier guys for the flats.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0140.jpg

And so it is. Halfway up the climb pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Tanfield and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Wohler are already dropped. The peloton is about 3 minutes behind the leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0141.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Ariesen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Kortsidakis are the next to lose contact around 5 km to the top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0142.jpg

A bit later it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Hulgaard and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Hoehn who lose contact. It’s still 3 km to the top, so we’ll see if they can come back in the long downhill section. The peloton is still pretty much complete and about 3 minutes behind the two leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0143.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Johannessen arrives at the top alone after he just drove pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Herregodts off his wheel at the end of the climb. His lead is about a minute. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Hoehn and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Hulgaard come over the top as 3rd and 4th, each with a gap of about 50’’.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0144.jpg

40’’ later the usual suspects fight for the remaining points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Khodayari gets 8 points to make it 62 now, thus increasing his KoM lead. Behind him it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Bagioli (46), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Alexander (45), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Sunderland (54) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Gee (54).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0145.jpg

The peloton chased hard in the downhill and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Johannessens lead went down from about 4 minutes to 1’45. He’s still half a minute in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Herregodts. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Hoehn is another 50’’ further back and has only 30’’ to the peloton which still consists of 152 riders. Will we even see another sprint today?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0146.jpg

That seems well possible as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Johannessen is now the only rider in front of the pack with 10 km to go. His lead is 56’’ but he’s up against 156 chasers. Though many of the sprinters are indeed dropped already there are still some of them in the peloton and those are well positioned too. The biggest names here are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Hsu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kalaba, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Contreras and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Yates.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0147.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Johannessen is finally brought back with 4.5 km to go. The final is slightly uphill but shouldn’t be too hard for those sprinters who managed to stay with the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0148.jpg

With 2 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov still has one domestique ahead, but given the experiences of the other sprints that’s probably too few. The other sprinters are bunched up behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0149.jpg

The Russian launches his sprint with 1.4 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0150.jpg

With 700 m to the line it’s close between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Yates. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Contreras, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Hsu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kalaba are already a bit behind, but could still get into contention if the three up front start to fade too early. Everyone else is quite out of contention.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0151.jpg

With 200 m to go it seems like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Yates is the fastest of the first three, but especially pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Contreras and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Hsu are closing in from behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0152.jpg

But the man in green stays in front and takes his third stage! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Hsu was really fast in the end and just edges out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu for 2nd place. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Contreras and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kalaba come in 4th to 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0153.jpg

Behind them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Cerny, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Garcia Cortina, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier complete the Top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0154.jpg

Congratulations to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Yates who also extends his lead in the points classification. No changes in the other classifications as well.
