Stage 9
After yesterday’s first outing of the GC riders we have another mountain stage today. But the profile doesn’t seem to be of a kind that allows for real GC action with the sole real obstacle placed rather mid-stage. Add a real hard mountain stage tomorrow and it’s more than likely today will be the first stage for the stage hunters in this year’s edition. But now let’s have a closer look at the route. The peloton starts in Pau, a city that’s among the most visited in the history of the Tour. The first 85 km go slightly uphill and the organizers even managed to find two KoM sprints (cat. 3 and 4) there before the main obstacle of the day is tackled. The HC climb Col d’Aubisque is equally well-known to the conaisseur as Pau. But with 45 km still to go after reaching the top and with only a slightly hilly profile after a long downhill it won’t be decisive enough to gain time in the GC (bearing for some legendary attacks). So we’ll likely see a mix of good climbers, KoM candidates and maybe even puncheurs trying to get into the break to be the first in Lourdes.
It took some kilometers but finally a group of 8 riders got away to form the break of the day. The lucky 8 are Tanfield, Hulgaard, Kortsidakis, Johannessen, Herregodts, Ariesen, Wohler and Hoehn. The McCormick rider is the only one who already has scored KoM points yet – but just 2.
The group has a gap of about 3 minutes when they arrive at the first KoM sprint. Herregodts was a bit late there and took the lead just behind the line, so Johannessen takes the 6 points. Ariesen gets 3rd place.
The young Norwegian also takes the second KoM sprint, this time in front of Ariesen and Kortsidakis. The lead is down to 2’20.
The intermediate sprint at the foot of the Col d’Aubisque isn’t contested. The lead of the group is still about 2 minutes, but there was some up and down of the gap till now so we’ll see if the stronger climbers in the group will be able to get further away in the climb itself (HC; 5.6 km at 7.4 %). It probably won’t take long for Johannessen, Herregodts and Hoehn to let the other 5 behind, as those are mainly bigger and heavier guys for the flats.
And so it is. Halfway up the climb Tanfield and Wohler are already dropped. The peloton is about 3 minutes behind the leaders.
Ariesen and Kortsidakis are the next to lose contact around 5 km to the top.
A bit later it’s Hulgaard and then Hoehn who lose contact. It’s still 3 km to the top, so we’ll see if they can come back in the long downhill section. The peloton is still pretty much complete and about 3 minutes behind the two leaders.
And Johannessen arrives at the top alone after he just drove Herregodts off his wheel at the end of the climb. His lead is about a minute. Hoehn and Hulgaard come over the top as 3rd and 4th, each with a gap of about 50’’.
40’’ later the usual suspects fight for the remaining points. Khodayari gets 8 points to make it 62 now, thus increasing his KoM lead. Behind him it’s Bagioli (46), Alexander (45), Sunderland (54) and Gee (54).
The peloton chased hard in the downhill and Johannessens lead went down from about 4 minutes to 1’45. He’s still half a minute in front of Herregodts. Hoehn is another 50’’ further back and has only 30’’ to the peloton which still consists of 152 riders. Will we even see another sprint today?
That seems well possible as Johannessen is now the only rider in front of the pack with 10 km to go. His lead is 56’’ but he’s up against 156 chasers. Though many of the sprinters are indeed dropped already there are still some of them in the peloton and those are well positioned too. The biggest names here are Grosu, Samolenkov, Hsu, Kalaba, Contreras and Yates.
And Johannessen is finally brought back with 4.5 km to go. The final is slightly uphill but shouldn’t be too hard for those sprinters who managed to stay with the pack.
With 2 km to go Samolenkov still has one domestique ahead, but given the experiences of the other sprints that’s probably too few. The other sprinters are bunched up behind him.
The Russian launches his sprint with 1.4 km to go.
With 700 m to the line it’s close between Grosu, Samolenkov and Yates. Contreras, Hsu and Kalaba are already a bit behind, but could still get into contention if the three up front start to fade too early. Everyone else is quite out of contention.
With 200 m to go it seems like Yates is the fastest of the first three, but especially Contreras and Hsu are closing in from behind.
But the man in green stays in front and takes his third stage! Hsu was really fast in the end and just edges out Grosu for 2nd place. Samolenkov, Contreras and Kalaba come in 4th to 6th.
Behind them Cerny, Garcia Cortina, Phinney and Lecuisinier complete the Top 10.
Congratulations to Yates who also extends his lead in the points classification. No changes in the other classifications as well.
