Stage 8

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/top_tdf_08.jpg

The first week of the Tour is done and after a lot of sprinting (sometimes uphill) it’s finally time for the GC fight to start properly. Starting in Cugnaux the riders have 130 km of getting warm before the real climbing in this stage (and this Tour) starts. The cat. 1 Hourquette d’Ancizan is merely a starter with the legendary Tourmalet and the mountaintop finish in Luz Ardiden (both HC) closing the stage. It’s no surprise the GC favourites are the favourites for today too. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier has already to make up 16’’ to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney, so we can probably expect a first big fight today, especially as tomorrows stage will be more likely one for the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0111.jpg

For once it seems like the peloton is willing to let more than three riders go. At least a group of 6 gets a gap after some kilometers. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Nikiema was the initial attacker and soon got some company, including some familiar names like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Mraouni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Rojas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Gee who wants to defend his nice polka dots jersey. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Bagioli as 3rd of the ranking is there as to get it from him though. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Zimmermann is the last escapee.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0112.jpg

The 6 get a gap of about 2’15 but aren’t allowed more. That’s probably just enough to get to the first mountain.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0113.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Bagioli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Nikiema sprint for the points at the intermediate sprint. The Italian takes the win. The rest of the break just rolls through though, the peloton is still just 1’51 behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0114.jpg

And here we go, the fight for this year’s Tour really starts as the break tackles the climb to Hourquette d’Ancizan (cat. 1; 10.1 km at 8.1 %).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0115.jpg

Only some kilometers into the climb pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Nikiema and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Gee are dropped from the break. If pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Bagioli is able to stay in front till at least the top of the Tourmalet that’s his chance to take over the polka dots. But that will be hard enough as the peloton is only 1’25 behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0116.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Rojas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Mraouni are dropped next, so it’s only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Bagioli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Zimmermann up front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0117.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Zimmermann takes the maximum points at the top. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Bagioli takes second place and adds 12 points to its tally, making it 40 in total. Behind them some of the other aspirants for the KoM sprint for the rest of the points with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Khodayari finishing third (now 34), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Sunderland (38) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Alexander (26) adding to their tallies. The remaining points are taken by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png MOL domestiques.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0118.jpg

The three aforementioned riders just rode together and made it to the two escapees in the downhill. The group of 5 has 1’44 to the peloton when they tackle the climb up the Tourmalet (HC; 17.3 km at 7.4 %).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0119.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Bagioli has to let go the other 4 half way up the climb, though it seems he could have stayed with them for longer. No polka dots for him today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0120.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Zimmermann cracks next with 5 km to the top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0121.jpg

The rest of the group crumbles apart until the top with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Khodayari (already out of the picture) taking the 20 points, making it 58 in total and the provisional KoM lead for him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Alexander (40) takes 2nd place. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Sunderland (50) just gets over the top before the domestiques in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0122.jpg

The final climb to Luz-Ardiden (HC; 14.2 km at 7.3 %) has just begun and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Hirt is already on the attack! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Khodayari is still a minute up front but he’ll be reeled in as soon as the favourites take it serious.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0123.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Hirt is brought back with 10 km to go and now it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Giannoutsos who attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0124.jpg

The other favourites follow this attack and after some counter attacking pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Barguil, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Bernal, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Carthy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Pogacar have a gap to the others. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier can’t be too happy with this and is already on the move. We’ll have a look at anyone else when the situation has settled a bit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0125.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier has made it to the front and took pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Sivakov with him, making it 7 riders at the front now.
Further back is a group of 11 riders including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Cattaneo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Quintana, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Penasa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Hirt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Kirsch, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Giannoutsos, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png McNulty, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Eenkhoorn and yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Yates.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0126.jpg

Soon after the two top favourites make their move and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney get away from the others. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Barguil is chasing on his own with the other 4 a bit further behind. Meanwhile pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Yates has lost contact to the other 10 in the bigger group. No really big gaps with about 3 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0127.jpg

The two at the front are under the red kite and have 48’’ to their chaser. It’s still possible that everything gets together behind them as the gaps there are about 15’’ each.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0128.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney was the more aggressive in the climb, but in the end pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier had that bit more of energy left that allowed him to take the win. We’ll see if there’s a gap awarded as the bonus seconds won’t be enough for the Frenchman to take the maillot jaune.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0129.jpg

Behind them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Bernal made it to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Barguil, but the latter takes 3rd place in the end. The two have lost about 50’’.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0130.jpg

The next group(s) are 20’’ behind. It’ll be the jury’s job to determine if there were any gaps there, but it’s clear pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Pogacar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Sivakov finished in 5th and 6th place. Behind them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Hirt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Penasa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Quintana and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol complete the Top 10. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png McNulty, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Giannoutsos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Carthy finish with them in 11th to 14th place. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Cattaneo is 15th with a visible gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0131.jpg

There is a small gap awarded at the front and so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier not only takes the stage but also the GC lead by a mere second!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0132.jpg

While pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Yates stays in green (and will actually wear this jersey tomorrow) pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Khodayari takes the KoM lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0133.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Pogacar is now the best U25 rider, but his lead over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png McNulty is only 8’’.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0134.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg is now the leader of the team classification.
