Stage 8
The first week of the Tour is done and after a lot of sprinting (sometimes uphill) it’s finally time for the GC fight to start properly. Starting in Cugnaux the riders have 130 km of getting warm before the real climbing in this stage (and this Tour) starts. The cat. 1 Hourquette d’Ancizan is merely a starter with the legendary Tourmalet and the mountaintop finish in Luz Ardiden (both HC) closing the stage. It’s no surprise the GC favourites are the favourites for today too. Lecuisinier has already to make up 16’’ to Phinney, so we can probably expect a first big fight today, especially as tomorrows stage will be more likely one for the break.
For once it seems like the peloton is willing to let more than three riders go. At least a group of 6 gets a gap after some kilometers. Nikiema was the initial attacker and soon got some company, including some familiar names like Mraouni, Rojas and Gee who wants to defend his nice polka dots jersey. Bagioli as 3rd of the ranking is there as to get it from him though. Zimmermann is the last escapee.
The 6 get a gap of about 2’15 but aren’t allowed more. That’s probably just enough to get to the first mountain.
Bagioli and Nikiema sprint for the points at the intermediate sprint. The Italian takes the win. The rest of the break just rolls through though, the peloton is still just 1’51 behind.
And here we go, the fight for this year’s Tour really starts as the break tackles the climb to Hourquette d’Ancizan (cat. 1; 10.1 km at 8.1 %).
Only some kilometers into the climb Nikiema and Gee are dropped from the break. If Bagioli is able to stay in front till at least the top of the Tourmalet that’s his chance to take over the polka dots. But that will be hard enough as the peloton is only 1’25 behind.
Rojas and Mraouni are dropped next, so it’s only Bagioli and Zimmermann up front.
Zimmermann takes the maximum points at the top. Bagioli takes second place and adds 12 points to its tally, making it 40 in total. Behind them some of the other aspirants for the KoM sprint for the rest of the points with Khodayari finishing third (now 34), Sunderland (38) and Alexander (26) adding to their tallies. The remaining points are taken by MOL domestiques.
The three aforementioned riders just rode together and made it to the two escapees in the downhill. The group of 5 has 1’44 to the peloton when they tackle the climb up the Tourmalet (HC; 17.3 km at 7.4 %).
Bagioli has to let go the other 4 half way up the climb, though it seems he could have stayed with them for longer. No polka dots for him today.
Zimmermann cracks next with 5 km to the top.
The rest of the group crumbles apart until the top with Khodayari (already out of the picture) taking the 20 points, making it 58 in total and the provisional KoM lead for him. Alexander (40) takes 2nd place. Sunderland (50) just gets over the top before the domestiques in the peloton.
The final climb to Luz-Ardiden (HC; 14.2 km at 7.3 %) has just begun and Hirt is already on the attack! Khodayari is still a minute up front but he’ll be reeled in as soon as the favourites take it serious.
Hirt is brought back with 10 km to go and now it’s Warchol and Giannoutsos who attack.
The other favourites follow this attack and after some counter attacking Barguil, Phinney, Bernal, Carthy and Pogacar have a gap to the others. Lecuisinier can’t be too happy with this and is already on the move. We’ll have a look at anyone else when the situation has settled a bit.
Lecuisinier has made it to the front and took Sivakov with him, making it 7 riders at the front now.
Further back is a group of 11 riders including Cattaneo, Quintana, Penasa, Hirt, Warchol, Rodrigues, Kirsch, Giannoutsos, McNulty, Eenkhoorn and yellow jersey Yates.
Soon after the two top favourites make their move and Lecuisinier and Phinney get away from the others. Barguil is chasing on his own with the other 4 a bit further behind. Meanwhile Yates has lost contact to the other 10 in the bigger group. No really big gaps with about 3 km to go.
The two at the front are under the red kite and have 48’’ to their chaser. It’s still possible that everything gets together behind them as the gaps there are about 15’’ each.
Phinney was the more aggressive in the climb, but in the end Lecuisinier had that bit more of energy left that allowed him to take the win. We’ll see if there’s a gap awarded as the bonus seconds won’t be enough for the Frenchman to take the maillot jaune.
Behind them Bernal made it to Barguil, but the latter takes 3rd place in the end. The two have lost about 50’’.
The next group(s) are 20’’ behind. It’ll be the jury’s job to determine if there were any gaps there, but it’s clear Pogacar and Sivakov finished in 5th and 6th place. Behind them Hirt, Penasa, Quintana and Warchol complete the Top 10. Rodrigues, McNulty, Giannoutsos and Carthy finish with them in 11th to 14th place. Cattaneo is 15th with a visible gap.
There is a small gap awarded at the front and so Lecuisinier not only takes the stage but also the GC lead by a mere second!
While Yates stays in green (and will actually wear this jersey tomorrow) Khodayari takes the KoM lead.
Pogacar is now the best U25 rider, but his lead over McNulty is only 8’’.
Carlsberg is now the leader of the team classification.
