Stage 7
After some days in the hills it should be a day for the pure sprinters again. Starting in Aurillac the peloton leaves the Auvergne heading southwards. The finish is in Carmaux in Occitania. From here on the riders will have to tackle the Pyrenees from tomorrow on, so it’s the last opportunity for the fast men in a while. Grosu will be wanting to take this opportunity to also take back the maillot jaune. The other jerseys probably won’t be in danger though, despite some theoretical options.
Gee was once again the first one to attack, but today he didn’t end in the break as the peloton once again wasn’t willing to let any group with more than three riders get away. He’ll be content with the composition of the group nonetheless as none of the escapees has accumulated any KoM points yet. The group of the day consists of Alexander, Antonijevic and Kiflay.
Alexander takes the intermediate sprint in front of Kiflay and Antonijevic. Rajovic and Hsu take the remaining points. As a result of this Yates will stay in green after this stage.
The three guys in the break give us a good show at the first KoM sprint, though the jury probably didn’t like being interrupted from their siesta to decide a photo finish. They have to nonetheless and award the win to Kiflay. The lead of the group is on 3’33, their biggest lead so far.
The second KoM sprint doesn’t look as close for a long time, but Kiflay takes his legs up too early and Alexander just edges him out for the win here.
The next KoM sprint is just about who is strongest on a short but steep cat. 3 hill and Alexander takes his next win here. The peloton is just over 2 minutes behind with 47 km to go.
And in the aftermath of this KoM sprint Kiflay and Antonijevic weren’t able or willing to close a gap of some seconds, so Alexander is now on his own with the other two are nearly back in the peloton.
And the peloton makes the catch some meters after the final KoM after riding 20 meters behind Alexander for most of the climb. What a nice gesture to let him win this 5 points too. But from here on the last 17 km lead mostly downhill with two short counterslopes and a slightly inclining finish. The sprinter teams should be easily able to control this till the end.
With 4 km to go it’s once again Rabobank who set up a train and control the race. With three riders in front of Grosu everything looks fine so far.
With 1.7 km to go Grosu still has his last leadout in front of him, but there’s the danger he once again launches to early. Farantakis won’t have to worry about that as he’s badly positioned way back in about 10th row and 20th place. His team won’t be pleased with that after once again contributing all day to control the race.
Grosu launches his sprint with 1.3 km to go. He’s still in front under the red kite with Philipsen and Jakobsen on his wheel. Lander, Carsi and Yates are the next in line.
Grosu starts to fade with 700 m to the line and quickly the whole bunch is about to overtake him.
With 400 m to go Kalaba accelerates like a rocket and takes the lead with Kennaugh and Peak on his wheel. Yates on the other side of the road also still seems to be able to accelerate.
200 m to the line and now Peak came in front like a cannonball. Kalaba still on his wheel with Trondsen and the latter seems to be the fastest of them all!
And the Norwegian gets past the Hungarian in the end, but only to get 3rd place as Contreras is the one who timed his acceleration best and takes the win! Sureda had a fast finish as well and comes in 2nd place. Prasad came near the podium too but ends in 5th place. Farantakis made a big move forward to finish 6th while Kiskonen, Kalaba, Yates and Cerny complete the Top 10.
Congratulations to Contreras for his stage win! There have been no leader changes in the classifications.
