pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png De Bie tops the list of favorites for today. Today should be a tighter finish with the short sprint uphill to the line in Grua.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png De Bod does a lot of breakaway formation work at the front of the peloton, not wanting to allow a big group to get ahead. It takes over 315km for the break to form with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png De Bod chasing down any secondary move that goes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/03.jpg

Only 3 riders are allowed away: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Albanese, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Strakhov, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png McCarthy. They’re finally allowed a gap as they approach the first KOM.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Strakhov gets the points barely on the line ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png McCarthy while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Albanese gets the measly 1 point for 3rd. The gap is widening with 140km to go and it is 4:40. With such strong riders in the breakaway, the gap does have to be considered - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Strakhov is just 48 seconds behind on GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/05.jpg

The first sprint comes with 105km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Albanese has the best sprint and flies through the group to take the win ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png McCarthy - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Strakhov was happy there was no 4th member of the breakaway to steal his 3rd place. The gap is now 5:05 and falling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/06.jpg

The group comes through the KOM again and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Strakhov wins again with the same strategy of attacking from the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png McCarthy is 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Albanese takes 3rd. The gap again continues to decline around 4:00 now with 87km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/07.jpg

The breakaway takes the points again at the 2nd sprint point. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Albanese remains king of the flat sprints while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png McCarthy can claim all the 2nd places on the day. That leaves pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Strakhov in 3rd. The peloton is unhappy with the gap and it is down to 3:00 as the road starts becoming more interesting.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/08.jpg

The peloton is led primarily by Lidl Cycling with assistance from Gazelle, EA Vesuvio, and Minions. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png De Bie is really looking forward to this stage as he appears close to the front of the peloton already - as is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/09.jpg

The third KOM is the first 3rd cat climb of the day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Strakhov leads the ascent, but there’s a new result this time! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Albanese finds the strength for 1st, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png McCarthy 2nd, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Strakhov 3rd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Strakhov still leads with 12 points over 10 and 8.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/10.jpg

56km to go is clearly not far enough to delay attacks, as this climb gives us action from the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Sosa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Skujins away from the bunch ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Mas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Mohoric who both also want in on the action. There’s no immediate response, but Pelikan does start a nasty tempo behind to pull it together. All 5 are brought back by the 50km to go marker.

That pacing has brought the original breakaway with 1:45 at the same marker and the tempo continues.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/11.jpg

The breakaway faces what will also be the finishing climb for another KOM point, The KOM goes 1km longer than the finish, but everyone sees how tough it could be. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Strakhov takes the points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Albanese and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png McCarthy. Given their fatigue, this will probably be their last points of the day as they only have 1:25 over the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Strakhov with 18 and the other two on 12.

Gazelle is the new team pushing the pace behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/12.jpg

The break is caught with 25km to go. The final stages were simply too steep and they couldn’t recover enough energy to push hard. A few minor splits form and reconnect due to the undulating nature of the course but everyone is still together except a few domestiques who have worked hard all day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/13.jpg

The next KOM points won’t change the jersey, but every point matters in a competition where only 3 riders have gained anything so far. It’s mostly paced over as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Mansouri leads the pack. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney are the next two across after following a tiny move by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Kwiatkowski but that never got away with so many trying to follow - still, all the leaders are nearby at the front.

10km to go and there is still simply pacing at the front from Minions, Gazelle and Lidl Cycling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/14.jpg

5km to go and the 3 best positioned at this point are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kinoshita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko in wheels 5-7. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lopez is a touch farther back, but a number of contenders seem to have forgotten how close the finish is.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/15.jpg

2km to go and the race heads uphill! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Malecki leads the group, but everyone is simply lined up behind as they prepare for the steep road to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/16.jpg

Under the banner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lopez has the lead ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kinoshita on the right. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Gidich sits in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lopez’s wheel with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Kwiatkowski on the left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png De Bie is even farther left next to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Habtemichael and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney. Many others still in contention.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Sagan has come flying near the rail and officially holds the lead with 500m to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lopez is still strong as is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Herklotz who has appeared near the front as well. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Gidich is even with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Sagan on the other side, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko finding a path, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Mohoric also nearby. Still too many to call.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/18.jpg

200m to go and the last rider’s name on the road is who is in front - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Herklotz! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Sagan still strong in 2nd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lopez sitting in good position next to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Gidich. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Valter are 5-6 as the line is coming quickly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Herklotz rides into the bush alongside the rail - just after he crosses the line as the winner of today’s stage! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lopez narrowly beats out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney for the remaining podium spots. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Gidich beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Sagan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Valter by the narrowest of margins.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko 7th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Kwiatkowski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Mohoric for the top 10. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kinoshita and surprise pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Habtemichael (who also did a good TT end the top 12).

No time gaps for the first 166 across the line and no big names there except our breakaway riders.
